Pets in the Office; the New Casual Friday

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – In today’s dog-eat-dog world, office managers are always looking for ways to improve their employees’ performance. One new trend taking place nationwide does just that by injecting a little fun into the workplace – and to do it, they’re making “bring your pet to work” an everyday thing.

It’s just another day in the office for everyone at Chapin Hill Advisors, Inc., a financial planning and investment advisory firm in New York City.

The industry this firm belongs to has a markedly stodgy tradition. To break free of the stress that can boil over with the market, company managers decided to allow pets in the office.

“When I’m having a stressful day and the market is going haywire, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing?’ I just pet one of (the pets) and they automatically make me feel calm,” said Kathy Boyle, CHA founder and president.

According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), 100 percent of U.S. companies they found that allowed pets, agreed that animals make the office environment more relaxing.

“Having an animal in the office brings a sense of joy, it brings a sense of fun,” said Boyle. “We work very hard and long hours, and being able to lighten it up is watching Paco run down the hallway chasing his ball. It brings a sense of joy, humanness and kindness.”

But it’s not all ball chasing and belly rubs, because having pets in the office can be complicated.

“You have an issue if you bring a cat; the dog is going to chase the cat.” Boyle said, “Dogs are the most ideal to bring to a firm like (CHA). But you will have rivalries and territories. You also have some issues about liabilities, employees getting in the middle of two dogs fighting.”

Those issues don’t compare to the work-life balance having a pet in the office can bring. Boyle said that she’s had a number of dogs who contracted cancer.

“If you know that they are down to the last few months you want to cherish and keep them closer to you, you want to see them more.” she said, “Where if you are working a million hours you wouldn’t see them in their last days.”

If your office wants to adopt pet friendly policies, Boyle says there are some rules to follow. She suggested that company considering this, ask:

“How big is your company going to be? It might be two of you and very casual and you each bring your dog but what if you get five more employees?”

She says setting a schedule for larger companies is key. You might want to allot each employee a day to bring their animal.

Being thoughtful about the issues is the only way to make the whole thing work, Boyle said. After all, not everyone has well behaved pets. You need to think about responsibility before hand, because with animals you never know what’s going to happen.

Some other things to think about:

Does anyone have allergies?

Establish “Off-limit pet zones.”

Make sure employees bring documents proving pets are vaccinated.

Tell employees to keep control of their animals at all times.

Make a rotating pet schedule.

If you put these rules in place, chances are you’ll have a pet-friendly workplace in no time.

Does your office allow pets? If you work for a shelter or rescue, clearly you do. But if you work in a traditional office, share your stories under this article. You can post your favorite pet videos at the ZootooTV tab. Send us your story ideas at news@zootoo.com or by calling us at 877-777-4204.

While having a pet or two hanging out in the office may indeed make the office environment more relaxing, don't really think this is such a good idea. Logistics way too complicated.

I can bring my 2 dogs to work. It is complicated at times because they just don't like some of the people here. Plus when we go for potty breaks people complain that I should be working instead of walking the dogs. They don't realize that potty time is faster than their smoke breaks. It can cause tension depending on the mood people are in that day.

I can see where allowing pets at work could become complicated...it certainly would be difficult to make work at large companies. I am a cat person and agree that it would be hard to have cats and dogs coexisting in a workplace. But it would also be unacceptable to allow only one or the other...unless the boss had an affinity!

Seems like a novel idea and would work if ALL the rules are followed ALL the time and no one is afraid of dogs

I would give anything to be able to take my dog to work. I'm sure I would be in a better mood and because of this be more productive. I miss by babies! (I probably wouldn't need to take as many mental health days either) Don't tell my boss!

I am very fortunate because I can bring my dog to work every now and then. Since our oldest dog passed away, he is lonely and home alone. He loves hanging out every now and then. It's too bad every workplace doesn't allow this. It makes people happier and probably more productive!!

Our company has 2 offices; we have a Yorkie "mascot" in one, and a friendly feline in the other. They both love coming to work with their owners! Always a conversation-starter with office visitors.

I wish I could bring my dog. However, I think it would take a little away from my work because he doens't like to not be the center of attention.

What a great idea !! I wish my co-workers would bring their pets to the office instead of dragging their rug-rats in, then getting offended if you don't make a big fuss over them !!

I would love to take mine with me, they'd have a blast visiting residents of the home where i work, a great number of these people have had to give up their pet to be in a home and love visits even from other peoples pets.

Really great suggestions for rules! At the shelter where I volunteer, sometimes I do office work and of course everyone has a foster animal in their office. It makes the workday go by so fast and there is so much less stress.

I think this is a wonderful idea but I have cat allergies. How would that work. If a cat is there regularly I would never be able to work there. Nice idea though.

I'm a college professor. My old school, a private school, didn't mind if I took my dog with me to my office hours now and then. The dean brought her two dogs to work every day. But now the state college I work for has a 'no dogs' policy. I wish our society was more welcoming of dogs in public places.

I know this work. My company only allow you to bring your animal in on Friday. It actually make me want to stay a little later to finish the work load instead of just leaving it for monday. Since friday is the day we all go to the park and play ball and just "sniff" around LOL.

I'm glad this is becoming a trend. My office building doesn't even allow pets into the building at all. If we can't bring our pets to work then parents should not be allowed to bring kids to the office either. Fair is fair.

I think this is such a great idea! I would definately be more relaxed at work with one of my pets near. And no more having to decide whether to tackle that last office task or get home to let someone outside!

Personally, I'd love to take my dogs to work with me, but it's not going to happen & probably shouldn't. My dogs have obedience titles, and CGCs/TDIs, but too many people can't control their pets, and don't train or restrain them, so unless there are clear cut rules, it would be a recipe for a lawsuit for a big company.

My office doesn't allow pets, but I tell you, having one in the office would make the day a lot more enjoyable. I work in a medical office though and it will never happen. There is a dog in the house next door that we all love on at lunch when he is taking his walk. Love ya Murphy.
