Pets in the Office; the New Casual Friday

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – In today’s dog-eat-dog world, office managers are always looking for ways to improve their employees’ performance. One new trend taking place nationwide does just that by injecting a little fun into the workplace – and to do it, they’re making “bring your pet to work” an everyday thing.

It’s just another day in the office for everyone at Chapin Hill Advisors, Inc., a financial planning and investment advisory firm in New York City.

The industry this firm belongs to has a markedly stodgy tradition. To break free of the stress that can boil over with the market, company managers decided to allow pets in the office.

“When I’m having a stressful day and the market is going haywire, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing?’ I just pet one of (the pets) and they automatically make me feel calm,” said Kathy Boyle, CHA founder and president.

According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), 100 percent of U.S. companies they found that allowed pets, agreed that animals make the office environment more relaxing.

“Having an animal in the office brings a sense of joy, it brings a sense of fun,” said Boyle. “We work very hard and long hours, and being able to lighten it up is watching Paco run down the hallway chasing his ball. It brings a sense of joy, humanness and kindness.”

But it’s not all ball chasing and belly rubs, because having pets in the office can be complicated.

“You have an issue if you bring a cat; the dog is going to chase the cat.” Boyle said, “Dogs are the most ideal to bring to a firm like (CHA). But you will have rivalries and territories. You also have some issues about liabilities, employees getting in the middle of two dogs fighting.”

Those issues don’t compare to the work-life balance having a pet in the office can bring. Boyle said that she’s had a number of dogs who contracted cancer.

“If you know that they are down to the last few months you want to cherish and keep them closer to you, you want to see them more.” she said, “Where if you are working a million hours you wouldn’t see them in their last days.”

If your office wants to adopt pet friendly policies, Boyle says there are some rules to follow. She suggested that company considering this, ask:

“How big is your company going to be? It might be two of you and very casual and you each bring your dog but what if you get five more employees?”

She says setting a schedule for larger companies is key. You might want to allot each employee a day to bring their animal.

Being thoughtful about the issues is the only way to make the whole thing work, Boyle said. After all, not everyone has well behaved pets. You need to think about responsibility before hand, because with animals you never know what’s going to happen.

Some other things to think about:

Does anyone have allergies?

Establish “Off-limit pet zones.”

Make sure employees bring documents proving pets are vaccinated.

Tell employees to keep control of their animals at all times.

Make a rotating pet schedule.

If you put these rules in place, chances are you’ll have a pet-friendly workplace in no time.

Does your office allow pets? If you work for a shelter or rescue, clearly you do. But if you work in a traditional office, share your stories under this article. You can post your favorite pet videos at the ZootooTV tab. Send us your story ideas at news@zootoo.com or by calling us at 877-777-4204.

Many of the lawyers in my office bring their dogs to work. They just keep the pets in their office, so they're not running around everywhere. I love to go and visit them!

I love the concept...the dogs would love to come in and visit! The cats would love to hang out and get petted, too!

How great this would be. I would love to take my dogs to work with me. I think that it would benefit your pet and other co-workers who didn't have pets at home. Who knows--maybe pet adoptions would increase if non-pet owners could experience the benefits of having a pet.

I recently went to a lumber yard which has an office cat. They told me that she appeared six years ago, pregnant and hungry. She had kittens, which they found homes for ~ and they had her fixed. She is now boss of the place, and lives a happy life. All of the employees seem to be very fond of her, and it made their office more warm and appealing.

Pets at the office is a great idea and can work in most establishments (in my opinion). At the junior high school my children attend, one of the teachers routinely brings his pug, Winston, to school. He is so well behaved and just loves sitting quietly and "learning." The teacher takes him out for potty breaks and he seems to enjoy being with everyone. The other evening, the teacher brought him to a school dance. I am not sure the loud music is good for Winston's ears, but he was so laid back perhaps his owner always play music that loud (yikes). Just having someone who gives you unconditional love on a really stressful day could be marvelous.

I can just see the kids enjoying Winston. It probably helps create a calmer atmosphere in the classroom which would help with the learning process. I think it is great to take pets to work for not only does it deal with stress, but the owner gets the chance for some brag rights.

My little chihuahua comes to work with me daily. He loves to sit in the window seat and catch sunbeams! Luckily my boss really likes him and it's a casual work environment but I can certainly see the havoc it would create if everyone brought their dogs in....haha what a circus it would be!! I love the idea of a "casual pet day", what fun!

I think this is a great idea, but it may work better in a small office. Its a really touchy situation because it would be great in a perfect world but you have face problems like all of the animals getting along and allergies or people who are fearful of animals.

Taking your pet to work sounds great, but I can't see that happening. Sounds more chaotic then worth it! I love my pets, but I have very bad allergies. Some dogs don't bother me, where others put me into an asthma attack. I would love to have my furry friends with me all day, but in a since, I also like a break,like from my kids. Sorry, kids, I love ya to death, but everyone needs a break! :}

I've taken my cat to work. I teach, and my kids LOVE animals. When I foster kittens, when they're on their way back to the shelter, I take them in and let the kids learn about what I do. My kids are from a pretty rough neighborhood...and this is a wonderful opportunity to let them seem the lighter side of life and how being a caring person has it rewards.

I would love to work in an office like this but I think that it would be easier said then done.
Some people don't want hair on their clothing ,don't like the odor of cat litter or just don't want an animal around.
There would always be one rotten apple to spoil the barrel.

If it was a policy that was set forth on hiring then that"s different. A person could sign a waiver of liability previous to employment.

Dogs should be allowed at places of employement. I know they brighten the day of residents at nursing homes, and they bring a smile to a kids face when they see a dog walking through the hallways of a school. It would have the same effect at a person's job!

I'd enjoy taking the dogs to work, but I think there would be so many problems! There would be a lot to work out! I probably wouldn't work for playing with the animals! Where I work now, we have 20 three and four year olds! They would have a blast, but can you imagine how crazy that would be?! Doubt much learning would take place!

This is such a cute idea. But at the same time, in order to avoid any problems between dogs, different days should be assigned for people to bring their dogs. Like the dogs who have problems at eachother should never be at the office on the same day. That would help avoid any problems. =]

I would love to have worked for a company who allowed me to bring my dog to work with me. I would occasionally take my dog to the office for a visit when I was on vacation and my co-workers seemed to love seeing her.

I used to bring my dog to work. She was a little chihuahua and would sit on the back of my office chair. I'd get up to go somewhere and she followed right behind. She not only made my day but everyone who saw her. Dogs bring a smile to even the most stressed out people!

It would be so uplifting, to have one of your best friends with you at work! The employees must love this policy! Going further, any business which has an "office pet" always seems friendlier to me ~ a business that I would enjoy working with, or shopping at.
