Pets in the Office; the New Casual Friday

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – In today’s dog-eat-dog world, office managers are always looking for ways to improve their employees’ performance. One new trend taking place nationwide does just that by injecting a little fun into the workplace – and to do it, they’re making “bring your pet to work” an everyday thing.

It’s just another day in the office for everyone at Chapin Hill Advisors, Inc., a financial planning and investment advisory firm in New York City.

The industry this firm belongs to has a markedly stodgy tradition. To break free of the stress that can boil over with the market, company managers decided to allow pets in the office.

“When I’m having a stressful day and the market is going haywire, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing?’ I just pet one of (the pets) and they automatically make me feel calm,” said Kathy Boyle, CHA founder and president.

According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), 100 percent of U.S. companies they found that allowed pets, agreed that animals make the office environment more relaxing.

“Having an animal in the office brings a sense of joy, it brings a sense of fun,” said Boyle. “We work very hard and long hours, and being able to lighten it up is watching Paco run down the hallway chasing his ball. It brings a sense of joy, humanness and kindness.”

But it’s not all ball chasing and belly rubs, because having pets in the office can be complicated.

“You have an issue if you bring a cat; the dog is going to chase the cat.” Boyle said, “Dogs are the most ideal to bring to a firm like (CHA). But you will have rivalries and territories. You also have some issues about liabilities, employees getting in the middle of two dogs fighting.”

Those issues don’t compare to the work-life balance having a pet in the office can bring. Boyle said that she’s had a number of dogs who contracted cancer.

“If you know that they are down to the last few months you want to cherish and keep them closer to you, you want to see them more.” she said, “Where if you are working a million hours you wouldn’t see them in their last days.”

If your office wants to adopt pet friendly policies, Boyle says there are some rules to follow. She suggested that company considering this, ask:

“How big is your company going to be? It might be two of you and very casual and you each bring your dog but what if you get five more employees?”

She says setting a schedule for larger companies is key. You might want to allot each employee a day to bring their animal.

Being thoughtful about the issues is the only way to make the whole thing work, Boyle said. After all, not everyone has well behaved pets. You need to think about responsibility before hand, because with animals you never know what’s going to happen.

Some other things to think about:

Does anyone have allergies?

Establish “Off-limit pet zones.”

Make sure employees bring documents proving pets are vaccinated.

Tell employees to keep control of their animals at all times.

Make a rotating pet schedule.

If you put these rules in place, chances are you’ll have a pet-friendly workplace in no time.

Does your office allow pets? If you work for a shelter or rescue, clearly you do. But if you work in a traditional office, share your stories under this article. You can post your favorite pet videos at the ZootooTV tab. Send us your story ideas at news@zootoo.com or by calling us at 877-777-4204.

I wish my company allowed pets. Also, is that not the funniest picture ever of the dog peeing on the computer. I love it! I've used it as my screen saver at work.

All these comments are saying what a great idea this is. But there are some real practical issues at stake. Not all animals are perfectly well behaved and could cause damage to the office, other animals or other workers. Plus, all the time you spend paying attention to the animal is time away from work. I can understand a one day a year thing, like take your child to work, but this isn't a good idea on a regular basis.

Animals are often more soothing than soft quiet music and they are not judgemental.
What a lift they are everyday. Great idea.

I have brought one of my pets to the office with me and it seemed to promote a sense of relaxation at the office. I would love to do it on a regular basis!

I would LOVE this at my work, it's very stressful and sometimes just looking at my puppies pictures calms me down having them there would be even better.

On the other hand I'm not sure how much work would get done with pets at the work place. Animals need your time and attention (especially if they're spoiled like mine) and they will need bathroom breaks. As much as I would LOVE the idea of having my pups with me at work it would probably be wiser to just hang pictures up

It is about time. Having an animal in the office is a very positive thing. My boss rescued a little kitten and allowed him to live where I work until his son could find an apartment willing to allow pets. This little tyke has free roam. He spent most of his time either laying on my desk or on the desk of my boss. I fixed up a litter box under a sink in the bathroom hidden behind some skirting. It was kept clean and nobody was the wiser. We fostered him for about 2 months. Everytime the men from the factory came to the office, the first thing they wanted to see and comment on was Mr. Neiko. Although we were all thrilled that he had a new loving home waiting him, we are still somewhat at a loss and sad that he is no longer roaming our halls.

This is truely a fabulous idea. I think as long as this can be done peacefully that more places should do this.

That is a great idea. Studies have show how animals relieve stress. I would just be concerned about the animal. If you are at work you can't exactly be taking care of the animal all day because you have to get some work done. I do love the idea though.

Great idea, I would participate. I do think that it could cause some problems though, all of the bugs would have to be worked out.

it seems like it's working just fine in the offices that have already implemented pet friendly offices. the rules help out a lot. some dogs are very docile and they're probably the best types to have. maybe if they rotated animals, one day dogs and one day cats. of course if people are allergic, you have to take things like that into consideration

I wish we had this at my workplace when I was still working! Too big, though, it would be bedlam. I wonder how much productivity is lost taking them outside regularly?

A great idea but I don't see where a person would get a lot of work done with the pet there.

This is such a good idea, if you work for a place that accepts ideas. I once brought my pet to work on a Saturday. Saturday was officially pet day so if you don't like pets you have an excuse not to come in for OT on Saturdays. It was actually very productive and relaxing at the same time to have pets in the office.

I love the idea of it but there are a lot of people who are afraid of pets. If you work in a public setting this may cause a drop in that days sales. But, then in a positive scence you will get a lot of courious people in to see the animals!

I think this would be easier to implement in a smaller office. A company with say 500 people might go a little crazy if everyone brought their dog. Also, this could open up to a lot of law suits if someone is bitten or if two dogs get into a fight or something.

this could brighten everyone's day! i am in favour of animals everywhere, especially shop cats and dogs... i work in a library and wish we could have a library cat, but it takes a special community to tolerate that without complaining about allergies and other personal issues. unfortunately we couldn't pull it off here.

When I worked for the ASPCA NAPCC in Urbana, IL we brought our dogs to work and it was excellent and a great conversation starter. An attorney in the area brought her puppy with her to work daily and my employer allowed me to bring Sammy my Min Pin in a few times and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Morale skyrocketed and people who usually never spoke to eachother had common ground. Unfortunately, traditional views of what's professional may still have a hold in smaller, rural areas and not allow dogs at work, but any boss/manager/owner in any field, professional or otherwise, should look at the research before making a conclusion. We have been discussing this in my office as a matter of fact! I don't have a dog, which is what they want to have in our office. But I would gladly bring my friends dog! It's such a good idea if you have a well behaved animal :)
