Pets in the Office; the New Casual Friday

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – In today’s dog-eat-dog world, office managers are always looking for ways to improve their employees’ performance. One new trend taking place nationwide does just that by injecting a little fun into the workplace – and to do it, they’re making “bring your pet to work” an everyday thing.

It’s just another day in the office for everyone at Chapin Hill Advisors, Inc., a financial planning and investment advisory firm in New York City.

The industry this firm belongs to has a markedly stodgy tradition. To break free of the stress that can boil over with the market, company managers decided to allow pets in the office.

“When I’m having a stressful day and the market is going haywire, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing?’ I just pet one of (the pets) and they automatically make me feel calm,” said Kathy Boyle, CHA founder and president.

According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), 100 percent of U.S. companies they found that allowed pets, agreed that animals make the office environment more relaxing.

“Having an animal in the office brings a sense of joy, it brings a sense of fun,” said Boyle. “We work very hard and long hours, and being able to lighten it up is watching Paco run down the hallway chasing his ball. It brings a sense of joy, humanness and kindness.”

But it’s not all ball chasing and belly rubs, because having pets in the office can be complicated.

“You have an issue if you bring a cat; the dog is going to chase the cat.” Boyle said, “Dogs are the most ideal to bring to a firm like (CHA). But you will have rivalries and territories. You also have some issues about liabilities, employees getting in the middle of two dogs fighting.”

Those issues don’t compare to the work-life balance having a pet in the office can bring. Boyle said that she’s had a number of dogs who contracted cancer.

“If you know that they are down to the last few months you want to cherish and keep them closer to you, you want to see them more.” she said, “Where if you are working a million hours you wouldn’t see them in their last days.”

If your office wants to adopt pet friendly policies, Boyle says there are some rules to follow. She suggested that company considering this, ask:

“How big is your company going to be? It might be two of you and very casual and you each bring your dog but what if you get five more employees?”

She says setting a schedule for larger companies is key. You might want to allot each employee a day to bring their animal.

Being thoughtful about the issues is the only way to make the whole thing work, Boyle said. After all, not everyone has well behaved pets. You need to think about responsibility before hand, because with animals you never know what’s going to happen.

Some other things to think about:

Does anyone have allergies?

Establish “Off-limit pet zones.”

Make sure employees bring documents proving pets are vaccinated.

Tell employees to keep control of their animals at all times.

Make a rotating pet schedule.

If you put these rules in place, chances are you’ll have a pet-friendly workplace in no time.

Does your office allow pets? If you work for a shelter or rescue, clearly you do. But if you work in a traditional office, share your stories under this article. You can post your favorite pet videos at the ZootooTV tab. Send us your story ideas at news@zootoo.com or by calling us at 877-777-4204.

be sure to bring their crates - puppies are VERY good at hiding somewhere to do their business...
I actually was thinking it would be great for the mature adult dogs - and I did bring Nikki to work once - picked her up from the groomer at lunch and broughth her in the office . a new strange environment so after she met everyone and socialized she went right under the el of my desk and curled up for a snooze - nobody even knew she was there but I smiled every time I looked at her :)

I love this idea, though I think I would bring my bunny before my dog. She gets to happy and EVERYONE has to pet her.

I know MY day would be far better if I could carry my kitty around with me at work. How he would feel about it is an entirely different matter, though...

I think this is an awesome idea...
Today, people's pets are their sidekicks, their children, their best friends!! This is a fun way to incorporate pets into everyday life. Plus, I bet less people would call in sick on Fridays!! :)

I think more businesses should be open to canines. For example, there are some GREAT stores you can take your dogs with you in. There are also restaurants around the U.S. who cater to owners and their four-legged friends:)

Much as I would love to be able to spend more time with my pets, I would never bring them to work with me. I feel like they would be much safer at home.

My sister used to be able to bring her dogs to work.
Everyone in her office loved it.
Don't know how the dog/cat/other pet dynamic would work though.

My boss always brings his dog in on Fridays. It's so much fun to play with her and watch her interact with the salesmen as well as the clients. Totally cool! And she loves all the attention and treats!

WOW! I don't work (Still in school), but even I know it would be amazing to have such a calming thing in such a stressful place.
My two cents on the territory/fighting/etc: Make it a requirement to have up a screen door/baby gate/kennel/etc blocking the cubicle entrance so the pets can't get out and meet.

Seriously, thoguh, I'd love to be able to bring my bunny to school with me. ^^ I'm sure it'd be about the same for work.

I hope this really catches on by the time I'm old enough to work. I'm sure pets in the office would be a wonderful thing!

I worked in an office once where you could bring your pet once in awhile...I only took Georgia (my pit) once, it was the morning I found her and didn't want to leave her to roam my house.

I wanted to do a "bring your pet to work" event locally to raise money for our shelter. I couldn't find any company interested in participating. I thought maybe the employee could donate $5 to the shelter to bring their pet to work once on a Friday. No one wanted to be a part of it though. Allergies was the main reason.

Great idea, however in most work environments this won't work. Actually any job I've ever had this won't work. You'll end up with more problems with pets in a store or restaurant. The other job I had was more of a factory setting. I used to run mailing machines that would cut, fold and put into envelopes bills. Having pets there would be disastrous. So maybe for those who work in an area without contact to the general public or an area that does not have dangerous machines it could work. However, I don't think that's where the vast majority of people work. It is great for those who have that option. On the other hand I also own three cats. There is no way I'd take them to work with me regardless of where I was working. Way too much stress on them.

this is a good thing IF the dog is friendly, employees are friendly animal people. how much time is spent with the pets instead of getting the job done. I guess I would have to make an opinion after I see this in action...

I saw a woman in our building with a small dog and asked her how she got to bring it to work. She had a doctor's request. She as dealing with a post-traumatic stress issue and having her dog with her was helping her thorugh it. At least the state allowed that--but I doubt we could all get doctor's notes!

I work in a school office and during vaction breaks for students we will occacsionally have someone bring in one of their small dogs - our boss will usually come out from her office when she hears us all playing - " knew it had to be a baby or an animal !! "
It is always a much needed break in the day:)

For folks that have good pets or control over their pets - it can be a great thing. For folks that do not - well - things can be a big mess. Just like when people bring their kids to work. Can work - but may not.

I work for a law firm and often bring in my fosters for visits to the office for a couple of hours. It is great and the other employees seem to enjoy it. It creates a relaxing environment at work and helps the fosters adjust to many situations.

My mother in law runs her own office and she has taken her 2 dogs to work with her for over a year now. The dogs love it! They don't have to sit at home all by their selves while she works AND she has built-in body guards if she is there by herself.
I think if the office is the right size, this is a great idea!

Offices that have pets in them are happier places to work, and appear more comfortable to clients. Some workplaces in our area adopt office pets from our local shelter ~ helping that pet, the shelter and the employees. A win for everyone!

I love that more and more companies are allowing pets at work- it proves to be beneficial to the companies! Pets make us motivated and make us laugh and force us to be in good moods. Smoke breaks are longer than taking a dog out to do his/her "business". People should just be mindful and resposible for their own dog-so to avoid dog or person bites!

You know... I think maybe the office should own a pet that everyone can care for. That way its the same dog everytime and you have something to look forward to. There used to be a dog in our office because it was a service dog. It was cool to have in our office everyday, and we looked foward to seeing him.

I so wish we were allowed to have animals where I work (college). Unfortunately with the number of employees and students in the buildings, it would be difficult to manage. So we have to settle for the ocassional visit from employees on their day off who bring their pets with them.

We often talk about this at work. We've had two Great Danes visit for an hour, a schnauzer hang out for a day and I keep threatening to bring in animals from the shelter. Our biggest concern is we are tenants and the landlord might not approve, our clients often are not anuimal lovers, and a few of the folks working here have allergies. But I love the concept and we'll keeping thinking of ways to do it at times.

I used to work in a school and it was very stressful. Every now and then someone would sneak their dog in to the office for a quick visit. The presence of the dog changed everyone's mood immediately. I felt my blood pressure go down 10 points. It is very therapeutic to have a pet around. That is why I now work at a shelter.

I love that places allow you to bring your dog to work. I wish mine did. It really does make for a better day, and it makes you look forward to going to work in the morning. I was allowed to bring my dog in to work with me when she was recovering from a surgery, I could keep my eye on her and that allowed me to concentrate more on work and relax more.
