Pets in the Office; the New Casual Friday

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – In today’s dog-eat-dog world, office managers are always looking for ways to improve their employees’ performance. One new trend taking place nationwide does just that by injecting a little fun into the workplace – and to do it, they’re making “bring your pet to work” an everyday thing.

It’s just another day in the office for everyone at Chapin Hill Advisors, Inc., a financial planning and investment advisory firm in New York City.

The industry this firm belongs to has a markedly stodgy tradition. To break free of the stress that can boil over with the market, company managers decided to allow pets in the office.

“When I’m having a stressful day and the market is going haywire, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing?’ I just pet one of (the pets) and they automatically make me feel calm,” said Kathy Boyle, CHA founder and president.

According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), 100 percent of U.S. companies they found that allowed pets, agreed that animals make the office environment more relaxing.

“Having an animal in the office brings a sense of joy, it brings a sense of fun,” said Boyle. “We work very hard and long hours, and being able to lighten it up is watching Paco run down the hallway chasing his ball. It brings a sense of joy, humanness and kindness.”

But it’s not all ball chasing and belly rubs, because having pets in the office can be complicated.

“You have an issue if you bring a cat; the dog is going to chase the cat.” Boyle said, “Dogs are the most ideal to bring to a firm like (CHA). But you will have rivalries and territories. You also have some issues about liabilities, employees getting in the middle of two dogs fighting.”

Those issues don’t compare to the work-life balance having a pet in the office can bring. Boyle said that she’s had a number of dogs who contracted cancer.

“If you know that they are down to the last few months you want to cherish and keep them closer to you, you want to see them more.” she said, “Where if you are working a million hours you wouldn’t see them in their last days.”

If your office wants to adopt pet friendly policies, Boyle says there are some rules to follow. She suggested that company considering this, ask:

“How big is your company going to be? It might be two of you and very casual and you each bring your dog but what if you get five more employees?”

She says setting a schedule for larger companies is key. You might want to allot each employee a day to bring their animal.

Being thoughtful about the issues is the only way to make the whole thing work, Boyle said. After all, not everyone has well behaved pets. You need to think about responsibility before hand, because with animals you never know what’s going to happen.

Some other things to think about:

Does anyone have allergies?

Establish “Off-limit pet zones.”

Make sure employees bring documents proving pets are vaccinated.

Tell employees to keep control of their animals at all times.

Make a rotating pet schedule.

If you put these rules in place, chances are you’ll have a pet-friendly workplace in no time.

Does your office allow pets? If you work for a shelter or rescue, clearly you do. But if you work in a traditional office, share your stories under this article. You can post your favorite pet videos at the ZootooTV tab. Send us your story ideas at news@zootoo.com or by calling us at 877-777-4204.

I would love to be able to bring my pets to work. They would keep me more relaxed and have more communication with my co-workers through the dogs.

Sounds like fun - we are only allowed to bring our dogs in if they are Therapy Dogs - it would be very cool to see everyone bring their pets in one day.

And we thought casual Friday was the best thing to happen to us! I'd love to bring my animals to work with me but my dog always gets nervous and pees and/or poops in my car. My husband says it's my driving.

My husband brings our dog to the office every day. He has a small firm and the employees all remark that the dog absolutely calms them down during the day. Even the employees from neighboring offices stop in to get their "dog therapy" to help them get through the daily grind. Perhaps this won't work in every environment but it certainly has benefits when it can be implemented.

This might work in some work places but I also think it could cause a lot of problems because most people think their dogs can do no wrong. I do think it is worth a try.

I'm pretty glad to hear this, but only because my dog is a frequent at my mom's workplace. She is so well beahved, and she really does seem to help with morale. People love to see her, and often want to take her for walks around the grounds. I think she's a great help in atitude and energy when she tags along!

Ok this is going a little too far to boost employee morale. How about treating your employees with respect and compassion, making the work environment safe and comfortable and getting some work done???

I work rotational shift work. Although my 12-hr shifts takes a toll on my mind & body, I would not trade it since it allows me to bring my dog to work with me. It's a great morale booster!

This is great! I'm glad that the company featured in this article thinks about everyone involved. I am able to bring my pets to work whenever I want, and for that I am very appreciative. It just makes the days better.

I would love this idea. Several years ago I worked at a library and for a short time we had 2 library cats. It was wonderful and calming. Because of complaints by a few people the cats were not allowed to stay. I am allergic to cats and have seven, but my cat allergy is not as severe as some I know.

make it simple for those who are allergies to pets the can have their own offices as no pets zone. and other rooms for cats only, the other rooms dogs only. perhaps this would solves problems from dogs chasing after the cats.

It does sound fun, but I'm not sure it is such a good idea. Allergies is a huge factor. Also, I think it would make work way less productive. Not to sound mean, but I also think it's just kind of silly. I took my dog to school with me one day in kindergarten. 18 years later, I have no want/need to take my cat to work with me. I think he'd be happy to stay home.

I think this is wonderful only if the workers have time to care for the pets and let pets do business outside and not make messes inside the offices. as for dogs chasing cats, perhaps they can setup workers with cats can be in the offices with the dogs, and the other for dogs only without the cats. sort of make arragements for this rooms would be only for cats, the other rooms for dogs. maybe that would solves the problems. but changing the workers desks in order to make this happens probably wouldn't like that ideas. but maybe they would. hmm I wonder?

I would love it if I could work for a company that allowed pets at work. Well if it was just dogs anyway. I don't think that I could be around cats all day without getting sick.

Would be fun but if everyone brought in their pet, wouldn't the office turn into more of a zoo? How would you get any work done. You would have to keep an eye on your pet. I'm not sure this would work.

YES - I love this idea! However, your article shows just what problems can arise if pets are allowed at work. Maybe more trouble than it's worth. I wish I could do this.

I do not agree with casual day with pets at work. I think it would create less productivity in the work place. I know my pooch would not get along well with others.

It is a good concept if you establish some guidelines in the beginning. All you need is one unhappy co-worker to upset the status of the office functioning in harmony.

An interesting concept, and one which I am sure would raise the morale of any employee involved! I also like the idea of office pets ~ dogs and cats which live in a given office all of the time.

My company used to do this but it got abused by stupid people so they put an end to it. Too many potty breaks and too many messes IN the office and the owners not cleaning them up. Come on people...a little common sense here!!
