Pets in the Office; the New Casual Friday

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – In today’s dog-eat-dog world, office managers are always looking for ways to improve their employees’ performance. One new trend taking place nationwide does just that by injecting a little fun into the workplace – and to do it, they’re making “bring your pet to work” an everyday thing.

It’s just another day in the office for everyone at Chapin Hill Advisors, Inc., a financial planning and investment advisory firm in New York City.

The industry this firm belongs to has a markedly stodgy tradition. To break free of the stress that can boil over with the market, company managers decided to allow pets in the office.

“When I’m having a stressful day and the market is going haywire, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing?’ I just pet one of (the pets) and they automatically make me feel calm,” said Kathy Boyle, CHA founder and president.

According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), 100 percent of U.S. companies they found that allowed pets, agreed that animals make the office environment more relaxing.

“Having an animal in the office brings a sense of joy, it brings a sense of fun,” said Boyle. “We work very hard and long hours, and being able to lighten it up is watching Paco run down the hallway chasing his ball. It brings a sense of joy, humanness and kindness.”

But it’s not all ball chasing and belly rubs, because having pets in the office can be complicated.

“You have an issue if you bring a cat; the dog is going to chase the cat.” Boyle said, “Dogs are the most ideal to bring to a firm like (CHA). But you will have rivalries and territories. You also have some issues about liabilities, employees getting in the middle of two dogs fighting.”

Those issues don’t compare to the work-life balance having a pet in the office can bring. Boyle said that she’s had a number of dogs who contracted cancer.

“If you know that they are down to the last few months you want to cherish and keep them closer to you, you want to see them more.” she said, “Where if you are working a million hours you wouldn’t see them in their last days.”

If your office wants to adopt pet friendly policies, Boyle says there are some rules to follow. She suggested that company considering this, ask:

“How big is your company going to be? It might be two of you and very casual and you each bring your dog but what if you get five more employees?”

She says setting a schedule for larger companies is key. You might want to allot each employee a day to bring their animal.

Being thoughtful about the issues is the only way to make the whole thing work, Boyle said. After all, not everyone has well behaved pets. You need to think about responsibility before hand, because with animals you never know what’s going to happen.

Some other things to think about:

Does anyone have allergies?

Establish “Off-limit pet zones.”

Make sure employees bring documents proving pets are vaccinated.

Tell employees to keep control of their animals at all times.

Make a rotating pet schedule.

If you put these rules in place, chances are you’ll have a pet-friendly workplace in no time.

Does your office allow pets? If you work for a shelter or rescue, clearly you do. But if you work in a traditional office, share your stories under this article. You can post your favorite pet videos at the ZootooTV tab. Send us your story ideas at news@zootoo.com or by calling us at 877-777-4204.

I think this is a great idea. As long as everyone gets along (like the Dog Whisperer's dogs). Pets can take your mind off of stress by just being around. Hope the idea spreads.

I love the idea of pets at work. I think it makes people feel more at home. Pets make people feel good. If you feel good at work, you're more likely to be more productive.

There are an awful lot of ifs in this sort of project. If they get along. If they are not going to have accidents. What if they have to go out during a meeting? If one person with allergies joins the firm, does everyone resent them when pets are suddenly banned?

I have a hard enough time typing at my computer without one of my dogs wanting to sleep in my lap. It's a nice idea, but why not just have a doggie daycare area and then you can visit your beloved pet during the day. It might make everyone happier and they can split the cost of the space and doggy sitter.

You're thoughts are exactly why more companies don't accept a pet day policy. Maybe we should concentrate on the positives and not always the 'what ifs.' If the 'what ifs' where always put in place as a barrier we would not be a very advanced country or world.

Seems like a good idea, if practical. Each job is different, the safety of the dog should be considered. Good sense should apply. I work at an animal shelter, so it is not practical for my personal dogs to visit.

I think you bring up an improtant point. I think the business needs tomake sure that having a dog around does not set off anyone's allergies. Some people are really allergic.

It could be depending on where you worked. you would need to locate a place to walk your dog and bring dishes and perhap food - if you worked long hours - sort of like packing up a younger kid for daycare everyday.

I think it depends. Dogs who have been well socialized, love going places and meeting people and who have had some training would be just fine with going.

I really like this. Several of my colleagues bring their pets with them in to work and go for walks on their lunch break etc. They're getting their work done and in a way that provides a happier, healthier lifestyle for pet and owner alike.

i work in a hotel, the night shift. every now and then when we have a slow night i bring my Dasiy to work with me. she loves it there, all the new people she see's and she has her spot behind the front desk. She even knows the area's of the hotel, i can tell her we are going to the 1st floor and she will run to the elivator. I brought her once in when we had a big group (red hat ladies) in the hotel and i dressed her up as a redhat lady, they loved it and so did Daisy. everyone wanted there picture taken with her and she turned into the Hotel Night Mascot. Her being there does not distract anyone from there Job (me or the night auditor) but it makes us work better. He is less stresses during the Audit and guest that arive late smile when they see her behind the desk and are less stressed over there late arrival at the hotel. If i have to go to the Hotel during the day i bring her in with me too and the sales department loves to see her, there is always someone whom will take her leach and walk her around.

Quite interesting!!! Sounds nice, but doesn't seem like it would be productive for work. I would be too interested in the animals than actually working!!

Our call center doesn't even allow "bring your child to work day." I can't see them allowing this.

Oh wait, the call center manager brings her daughter to work at any time when she doesn't have a babysitter. I'm sure she would bring her dog in if the same thing happened.

As for us peons. Nope. It wouldn't happen, but it's a good idea.

This is a great concept. You need to be concerned about if your pet will adjust to other pets and can be well behaved. Good judgement is needed to make it work.

Yes, I think the dog's personality should be considered. not every dog would enjoy going to work everyday and not every dog is friendly and can handle meeting a lot of people.

I think this a good idea as long as it is handled in an organized way. It might encourage people to make sure they get obedience training for the pets so that they can take them to work.

I used to take my dog - a therapy dog to work many years ago when I worked at a psychiatric hospital. I enjoyed having her with me, but needed to shcedule times for potty breaks and short walks in addiiton to thinking about what I had planned for the day and if it would be good for her to go that day. Certainly there is a lot more to pack to go to work.

No surprise here! If our companion animals could be at work with us it wouldn't be such a "JOB". Therapy animals make everything easier.PLUS this would promote training because nobody would want an unruly animal in the workplace. THAT would be good for animals and owners!

Sounds like this would be a good idea in some work environments but not all professions can allow this. Anyone notice the NO BARKING COLLARS ON HER PETS- something I don't approve of. If the pets have to wear these at the workplace then I VOTE AGAINST THIS NEW IDEA.
