Pets in the Office; the New Casual Friday

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. – In today’s dog-eat-dog world, office managers are always looking for ways to improve their employees’ performance. One new trend taking place nationwide does just that by injecting a little fun into the workplace – and to do it, they’re making “bring your pet to work” an everyday thing.

It’s just another day in the office for everyone at Chapin Hill Advisors, Inc., a financial planning and investment advisory firm in New York City.

The industry this firm belongs to has a markedly stodgy tradition. To break free of the stress that can boil over with the market, company managers decided to allow pets in the office.

“When I’m having a stressful day and the market is going haywire, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what am I doing?’ I just pet one of (the pets) and they automatically make me feel calm,” said Kathy Boyle, CHA founder and president.

According to a survey conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), 100 percent of U.S. companies they found that allowed pets, agreed that animals make the office environment more relaxing.

“Having an animal in the office brings a sense of joy, it brings a sense of fun,” said Boyle. “We work very hard and long hours, and being able to lighten it up is watching Paco run down the hallway chasing his ball. It brings a sense of joy, humanness and kindness.”

But it’s not all ball chasing and belly rubs, because having pets in the office can be complicated.

“You have an issue if you bring a cat; the dog is going to chase the cat.” Boyle said, “Dogs are the most ideal to bring to a firm like (CHA). But you will have rivalries and territories. You also have some issues about liabilities, employees getting in the middle of two dogs fighting.”

Those issues don’t compare to the work-life balance having a pet in the office can bring. Boyle said that she’s had a number of dogs who contracted cancer.

“If you know that they are down to the last few months you want to cherish and keep them closer to you, you want to see them more.” she said, “Where if you are working a million hours you wouldn’t see them in their last days.”

If your office wants to adopt pet friendly policies, Boyle says there are some rules to follow. She suggested that company considering this, ask:

“How big is your company going to be? It might be two of you and very casual and you each bring your dog but what if you get five more employees?”

She says setting a schedule for larger companies is key. You might want to allot each employee a day to bring their animal.

Being thoughtful about the issues is the only way to make the whole thing work, Boyle said. After all, not everyone has well behaved pets. You need to think about responsibility before hand, because with animals you never know what’s going to happen.

Some other things to think about:

Does anyone have allergies?

Establish “Off-limit pet zones.”

Make sure employees bring documents proving pets are vaccinated.

Tell employees to keep control of their animals at all times.

Make a rotating pet schedule.

If you put these rules in place, chances are you’ll have a pet-friendly workplace in no time.

Does your office allow pets? If you work for a shelter or rescue, clearly you do. But if you work in a traditional office, share your stories under this article. You can post your favorite pet videos at the ZootooTV tab. Send us your story ideas at news@zootoo.com or by calling us at 877-777-4204.

Love it! I've long been a proponent of people being allowed to bring their pets to work. I love going into an office and finding a lounging cat on the desk or a lumbering dog under the desk. It is very healthy for both pets and humans. Keeps stress and anxiety down in the work place.

I used to work on a university campus and I could bring my dog with me to the counseling center. She was a great help with the sutdents, - a great ice breaker, and sometimes she helped to help the students. and I could get out of boring meetings by saying the dog needed to go out!!!

I am fortunate that I can bring my dog to work since I have my own office. It was very helpful when she was a puppy - I couldn't imagine leaving her home all day long as a pup. But honestly once she got to be about 7 months old she didn't want to come with me anymore - she wanted to stay home with her big bro Dallas, so I let her. Now, she'll come every once in awhile.

I work at home a lot, so I get my animal time. I do not think mine would like it very much. What if your dog bites the boss's dog or cat?

From a practical sense this would be best limited to private offices and the dogs should be crated, but then people without private offices would feel discriminated against. Some people are fearful some are allergic. I brought my dog to work one day when I had to stop in briefly. Dottie was on leash. One of my co-workers looked and her and said, please don't bring her any closer. I must have been 20 feet away. I assured him that she was a therapy dog and incredibly human friendly. He said I'm sure she's a great dog, but please don't bring her any closer.

Might work in smaller, more casual offices, but then you would have people wanting to bring their kids in, they can be just as disruptive as animals.

If I were afraid of dogs, this would be somewhat problematic. What sorts of allowances are made for these types of situations, I wonder.

I love this idea- pets are so therapeutic! We wouldn't be able to have them where I work (medical clinic) due to patient allergy risks but it's great for those who can.

I think this is a great idea. How about taking it a step further and having a pet that is part of the company. Adopt an animal that can be there all the time and everyone can help take care of it and also give it love.
I like the idea too of not leaving your own pet at home for hours. This makes sense as long as you can follow the guidelines.

I think my dog would really love this, and I know I would. I have actually noticed that my blood pressure is lower when I am petting Katie or watching TV with her vs reading a nice book or just sitting by myself at home. Dogs give humans a lot that goes unnoticed, and I think I would be able to focus more with my trusty friend at my side.

A small local accounting firm lets one employee's three little dogs have the run of the offices. They're friendly, quiet, and well-behaved, so there've been no complaints from coworkers or clients in over two years. I don't know if this is an asset to, or a distraction from, worker productivity, however.

While I like the idea, it may not be very practical for some pets, especially if they are not used to going in that environment all day long. It could definitely cause a lot of problems if the animals are not social with other animals and people. The dogs can also be a distraction for the person. I know when I bring my dogs to work with me - - and that's a construction site - - I am not paying as much attention to my work as I would like to and have the dogs crated in the car (no, not in the hot weather). Also, I can see the people with allergies complaining. If Bill Clinton complained, then you know others will!

Good point- that as for some dogs it may lower their person's stress level, other dogs could do the opposite. It would entirely depend on the dog.

I usually bring my dogs along when I work on days that no-one else is in the office. It makes them as well as me happy not to be separated - and I do notice that I am more productive.

I wish I could bring my dog to work. But my office has high foot traffic with customers coming in all the time. I wouldn't want him to get loose. I think it is a great idea for workplaces that don't have very many non-employees coming and going.

I think I would have to think about this idea a lot before I would allow it in my company. I am pro animal, however, it just seems like it would be another thing for employees to side tracked about. Plus you always have people who don't like animals. Also, I love my animals (cats) but I would never take them away from home. They would hate it. I really think animals belong at home and I don't understand why people think they need to drag them around everywhere they go.

good idea. i went to a doctor once who brought his dog to work. i think it is very relaxing, that is if the dog is relaxed. large offices could take turns bringing their dogs or cats. there is some issues that need to be worked out.

This could work in a small office where everyone knows each other, but i cannot foresee it being successful in a large office. Too many animals together can be a hazard. Also, what if someone is allergic? You are just making them uncomfortable. Also there would def. have to be a NO PET ZONE and a vaccination sheet. The idea seems good, but would def. depend on the type of work going on because what dog wants to sit at your feet while your on the computer, when they could be outside running around at home?
