Pets Can Go To Summer Camp, Too

Browse News

HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- School’s almost out, and parents are scrambling to figure out how to keep their kids busy over the summer. Their four-legged “kids” may also find a special summer activity, at camps specifically designed with them in mind.

At facilities such as the Cascade Pet Camp, playgroups and social time are highly encouraged by camp “counselors.” Large, fenced-in runs, private “piddle areas,” even private rooms complete with easy access to a covered, outdoor patio, plush bedding, décor, and a television (always set to “Animal Planet”) are all clues this isn’t your simple boarding facility.

“Pets are becoming part of our family,” said Mary Leighton, Cascade Pet Camp manager. “Our society has changed as the years have progressed. It’s not just ‘slap some dog food at the back door’,” mentality when it comes to pet care.

The owners of Cascade Pet Camp originally had an agility training center in mind. But founded Jenni Lott also thought -- what else would pet owners be willing to treat their animals to?

Similar to camp activities you’d find for human kids, campers enjoy lots of outdoor time led by “counselors.” That social aspect is why Pit-mix Briar began coming to Cascade two years ago. His owner, Theresa Hennery, sent him to puppy kindergarten, and has brought him back many times since whenever she has a trip.

“I checked out other kennels, like boarding at my vet. I know the vet is really good, but they just have this concrete little cell he’d sleep in and someone would walk him several times a day,” Hennery said. “As soon as we get on the gravel road (to Cascade Pet Camp) he’s shaking, he’s barking, he’s so excited, he’s like, ‘yay’!”

Playgroups are determined by size and personality of the dogs. For anti-social pets, one-on-one “buddy time” is available. Each pet has his own room and their own fenced-in “piddle” area -- unless a family of pets are staying together.

The floors are heated, since nights can get pretty chilly in the Northwest.
When the camp first opened in November 2005, it had one camper -- a dog. That Christmas, 50 dogs came to stay. Since then, Leighton said the facility has been at full capacity every holiday -- up to 96 dogs, and 14 cats at a time.

The average stay is four to seven days, typically when owners head up to ski, bike or hike one of Oregon’s mountains, but some pets have stayed as long as three months. Day camp is available too.

Cats stay in their own condos, and each get individual time out of their condos to frolic on the cat tree. Other campers have included ferrets, birds and a goldfish that accompanies its poodle-sibling. (“The goldfish adorns a desk and gets on a feeding schedule like the cats,” Leighton said.)

The cost isn’t cheap, ranging from $24-$40 a day for dogs, and $18 a day for cats. But for owners like Hennery, the peace of mind is worth the price.
“I have anxiety issues about leaving my dog and I know he loves being here,” she said.

I think we are seeing that people have begun to realize the importance of our pets to us,and more facilities for "Pet Care and Pet Pampering",are at least, showing up,and we are now seeing better/ more options in regards to keeping our pets, happy and healthy when we can't be there with them.
I'm not sure that I would do this personally, but it's nice to see that if ever it was needed, the options are more readily available.

I think it is awesome to have something like this. It is so much better than putting your dogs in a kennel

It's a nice idea. But with gas being 4 dollars a gallon it's to pricey!

That seems like a good place to leave your pet. I think it would be a lot more fun for your dog than your cat, though. Especially my cat, who is really territorial and needs a lot of space.

Watched the video, should have done that first. The dogs look to be pretty happy but I would never think of sending a cat to have it's own "condo". Didn't look too big in the video. I could see that a lot of our feline friends would NOT be happy campers!
Anyone who has a cat knows they are not fond of confinement and I'm sure a little personal time to "climb the tree" is not enough for them. I could see mine "scratching my eyes out" if they spent time at "camp".

This is all well and good if you are comfortable leaving your pet with strangers, at least the first ew times. I prefer to have mine stay with family, being that currently I only have cats the family ususally stays/checks on them. Cats are much easier when it comes to this.

This might be something for folks who have a injury or long term medical stay could turn to instead of giving up the pet forever.

I think its a good idea for dogs to have a camp to go to but, the owners need to check into the background of these camps before sending their pets.

I think it is a great idea for dogs while owners are on vacation. I am not so sure about cats. They can pretty well take care of themselves for a week as long as you have someone stop by once a day to check their food and water. I have two cats and I think that they would prefer to stay in their own home. I am sure that they are jumping on kitchen counters, etc. while I'm gone.

This does sound like a great idea, but remember that pets can't rationalize like we do. They don't understand why they can't go with their family. They don't know it's just overnight. For me this would be for emergencies only. It's good to know tath the option exists, though.

WOW! Three months! NO WAY could I leave my pet for that long! I have a hard enough time leaving them if I can't take them on a weeks vacation with me!
I think that this is a great idea. I usually leave my babies with family, but if I can't, then I've left them with my vet (better peace of mind because I know them and if they get sick, they are taken care of)...however, like someone else said, there it's just "concrete cells" which bothers me. (Although because my vet is a small operation, they do get more time outside with the techs.) Anyways, I would consider a place like this...after checking them out and getting to know them. I'd make pop-in visits at various times to see what's going on. I'd also want to know the ratio of staff to pets, etc. Price sounds good. There's a place in my area that charges a little more, but don't have those amenities.

I'd like to leave my pets their if i were to go on vacation. It's not always convenient to take them with me and I would feel that they would be in a good place. When I was a kid we use to leave our pets at the house and have a cousin or uncle feed them, but i was never sure if they took as good of care of them as we did. they also would seem really angry at us when we returned. I would like to be able to leave them at a place where I KNOW they will be treated well.

I can see the benefits of having a place like this available, but leaving a pet there for "as long as three months" sounds excessive. Dogs, in particular, may have separation anxiety even if they normally do not. If "pets are becoming part of our family", it doesn't seem right to leave them at any type of camp for more than a few hours! The article makes it sound as though all pets are overjoyed at being dropped off at this camp, but there are bound to be many dogs/cats that "cry" when the owners leave--just like kids might do! I would question how effective the camp would be when there are a disproportionate number of "unhappy pets" there at the same time. Does the staff attend to the "happy campers" (and largely ignore the unhappy ones), or do the "unhappy campers" draw more attention and then make the happy campers not-so-happy? Depending on the nature of the pets there at any one time, this could be a "miserable place".

The only way I could see three months if 1. if you are going overseas for a business trip that might take a few months, 2. illness/surgery and you could not care for your pet or be home with it, I would rather see somebody use a place like this than to give up the pet completely.

I personally could not be away from my pets that long.

The camps SEEMS appealing, but I wouldn't send Kelsie ANYWHERE that I didn't personally know the people. I would be very uncomfortable sending her to someplace like that. Plus I wouldn't know what to do with myself is she was away that long! ^_^ It may be a nice place, but I'm very cautious about who Kelsie's with and where she goes.
