Pets Can Go To Summer Camp, Too

Browse News

HOOD RIVER, Ore. -- School’s almost out, and parents are scrambling to figure out how to keep their kids busy over the summer. Their four-legged “kids” may also find a special summer activity, at camps specifically designed with them in mind.

At facilities such as the Cascade Pet Camp, playgroups and social time are highly encouraged by camp “counselors.” Large, fenced-in runs, private “piddle areas,” even private rooms complete with easy access to a covered, outdoor patio, plush bedding, décor, and a television (always set to “Animal Planet”) are all clues this isn’t your simple boarding facility.

“Pets are becoming part of our family,” said Mary Leighton, Cascade Pet Camp manager. “Our society has changed as the years have progressed. It’s not just ‘slap some dog food at the back door’,” mentality when it comes to pet care.

The owners of Cascade Pet Camp originally had an agility training center in mind. But founded Jenni Lott also thought -- what else would pet owners be willing to treat their animals to?

Similar to camp activities you’d find for human kids, campers enjoy lots of outdoor time led by “counselors.” That social aspect is why Pit-mix Briar began coming to Cascade two years ago. His owner, Theresa Hennery, sent him to puppy kindergarten, and has brought him back many times since whenever she has a trip.

“I checked out other kennels, like boarding at my vet. I know the vet is really good, but they just have this concrete little cell he’d sleep in and someone would walk him several times a day,” Hennery said. “As soon as we get on the gravel road (to Cascade Pet Camp) he’s shaking, he’s barking, he’s so excited, he’s like, ‘yay’!”

Playgroups are determined by size and personality of the dogs. For anti-social pets, one-on-one “buddy time” is available. Each pet has his own room and their own fenced-in “piddle” area -- unless a family of pets are staying together.

The floors are heated, since nights can get pretty chilly in the Northwest.
When the camp first opened in November 2005, it had one camper -- a dog. That Christmas, 50 dogs came to stay. Since then, Leighton said the facility has been at full capacity every holiday -- up to 96 dogs, and 14 cats at a time.

The average stay is four to seven days, typically when owners head up to ski, bike or hike one of Oregon’s mountains, but some pets have stayed as long as three months. Day camp is available too.

Cats stay in their own condos, and each get individual time out of their condos to frolic on the cat tree. Other campers have included ferrets, birds and a goldfish that accompanies its poodle-sibling. (“The goldfish adorns a desk and gets on a feeding schedule like the cats,” Leighton said.)

The cost isn’t cheap, ranging from $24-$40 a day for dogs, and $18 a day for cats. But for owners like Hennery, the peace of mind is worth the price.
“I have anxiety issues about leaving my dog and I know he loves being here,” she said.

If I needed to go away and could not take Candy along, she would stay at her familiar Vets' boarding kennel. She likes them and I would save a bundle.

Great idea for while you are on vacation, if you could afford it!

I would only use this facility if needed while I went on vacation if I couldn't find a friend to keep a close eye on my pet or for a needy dog that might run away if I wasn't home for days.

I don't know why I'd want to be separated from my pet this way.

When I saw this headline I thought it was about a camp for you and your dog! I was kind of disappointed when I read it. However there are Summer Camps out there for owners and their pet that sound like a lot of fun and a great way to spend time with your dog

If this is only a way for the family to vacation together, fine. Otherwise, I see no need.

This seems a bit excessive. We spend far too much on our pets sometimes when the money could be used to support shelters that are lacking some needed supplies.

I guess I don't see this as summer camp. To me, it sounds like doggy daycare with an overnight stay feature added in possibly. This concept is not new at all.

Alternative: Take that $24-40/day and donate it for discounted spay/neuters on shelter pets. Then take your dog for a half-hour walk. Every day. No excuses.

This sounds more like overnight daycare. Many facilities like these are popping up all over the country. Depends on what your comfort level is and how much you are willing to pay for pet boarding.

I'm sure this is a better alternative than most boarding kennels. But after the sorrow of loosing my first dog, many years ago,I wouldn't go on a vacation with out my dog. They are with us for far too short of time to not spend every moment I can with them.

I like the concept, but it's not for all dogs. Dogs need to be social with people and other dogs to enjoy themselves.

I live in GA and work at Camp Bow Wow. It's such a better alternative than cramming your dog in a crate all day, getting 2 or 3 potty breaks per day. I don't know anything about the dog daycare/boarding mentioned in this article, but I do know that at CBW, we have 4 indoor/outdoor yards that the dogs can use anytime. It's an "open-play" facility, so your dog has to pass an "interview" in order to participate in the Day Camp and/or Over-Night Camp, just to make sure they get along with other dogs and will alow us to take them to and from their cabins. The only time they are in their cabins is when they eat and sleep, that's it! We have qualified "Counselors" keeping an eye on everyone all the time and Camper Cams so you can view your pet online where ever you are! It's the best job I've ever had and I' m gung-ho in case you can't tell!!

Awesome. I want a place like this in my community. The prices aren't that much higher than just a regular boarding place. I would pay $24.00 a day for my dogs to go to a wonderful place like that instead of a regular boarding. I love that pets are getting the attention they deserve. They are being recognized as family members more & more now. It's great. Now we just need to toughen' up the laws on abuse, neglect & shut down all the puppy mills. They are family members so the laws should treat them as so. Great idea they have going @ this summer camp or should I say year round camp! Great story Zootoo, is there any more of these type places in other states? Would love to hear more about them & their locations.

How much fun is that!?!?

If I had no way to keep my dog or cat at home with someone familiar to watch over him or her, I would definitely use one of these camps if there was one around here. The cost is worth it for some peace of mind.

This is not something I could do with my current pets. They would not like to be in a group of other dogs. Hrothgar is way too dominate. Alarm and Differ always follow Hrothgar's lead. So not for us. However, I don't think there is nothing wrong with a place like this. I would use it if I knew my dogs would like it. But then again, I know they love their "uncle Ted".

I think this is a great idea for travelers, but not really practical at $40 a day. My dog sleeps most of the day now that she's older, so I feel like I would be wasting my money. But still I think its great that people are realizing that pets are a member of the family too.

Where I live, the cost of quality kennel care runs in this range. My dogs go to a "free range" kennel - where the dogs are simpy separated by size and are left to roam and play (supervised) indoors and outdoors at their pleasure. They are only separated to eat. When I come to drop off or pick up, all the pups are hanging out together and sleeping/playing at will with the other dogs. As a result, my dogs are well socialized around others and, best of all - SLEEP FOR 3 DAYS after I come to pick them up ! :) It really is a great idea.

I like this idea, and you know when you take your animal to the vet they charge about the same but without the specialize treatment.
