Pets Are Companions, Not Gifts

Browse News

Whether young or old, there's few people who wouldn't love to spend Christmas morning playing with a warm, fuzzy new pet. As consumers stroll malls across the country, they will undoubtedly pass a pet store or two, and not be able to resist the big doughy eyes of a puppy or kitten.

But animal shelter reps warn against impromptu pet buying. So if you do decide to bring a pet home this holiday season though, we recommend the following;

Before going to a pet store or online, check with your local shelter. Often pets come vaccinated and ready to go – and they have purebreds, too. You can take one home for, in some cases, as little as $10 or even for free. That's compared to price tags reaching hundreds of dollars and up from pet stores and breeders.

Most shelters will require the future owner to go through a screening process before the pet can be taken home – so rule out surprise pet giving.

Make sure the breed, size, energy level, etc. are compatible with your lifestyle.

Finally, keep in mind that training a puppy is time consuming. Adult animals are already house trained and it's likely you'll know exactly how it's going to act, too.

Thousands of dogs are needlessly put down each year, looked over for a pet store puppy – a puppy that if purchased on a whim, could end up in a shelter by the new year.

It's a great idea to think about giving a pet a new home, so make sure you've thought it through before signing on that dotted line - for your sake, and the animal's.

People should not give pets as presents as a general rule but there are always a few exceptions where it might be okay like when a parent gives a child a pet for a gift since the parent will actually be the one taking care of the pet. On the other hand, parents of adult children, who do not live with their parents, should probably not be giving their offspring a pet.

I agree, an animal should never be an impulse buy. You really need to look at what you are getting into. Also, adopting from your area shelter is a much smarter choice than buying from a pet store. They only encourage breeing and puppymills.

This article should be repeated before every holiday, Christmas and Easter. I know it is not profitable for the pet stores, but it should be posted there also.

Giving an animal of any kind as a gift is NEVER a good idea. Our shelter encourages people to buy a gift certificate, good for the price of adoption/spaying, etc. I guess that could backfire, too, if the person with the gift certificate turned out to be someone you couldn't adopt to. (For instance, someone who stated they intended to breed the animal!)

I would never give somebody a pet as a gift unless they wanted it and understood that they were going to have to commit to it. My dog was a gift to me. I love him to death. But I also really wanted him and knew to take care of him. People who think Christmas morning is a good time to give a cat are crazy. There is too much commotion during the holidays to bring a new pet into the household.

Sometimes pet gifts work just fine. One of my dogs is a stray that I ended up keeping for someone as a temporary situation because I was convinced that I couldn't afford or care for another dog. I now wouldn't give him up for the world.

That is too bad that a lot of Christmas gift puppies or Easter bunnies end up in shelters very quickly.

great hints. Besides a lot of times buying from a pet store just supports puppy mills.

I totally agree with this article. Sometimes people do not think. I did give my mother a dog from a shelter for Christmas four years ago.....but she searched petfinder.com with me and we went together to meet the dog. I knew she wanted a dog, so what better thing to give for gift......that is what people think. The dog she adopted was two years old and she had a choice in the gift!

At our shelter, we do not adopt out animals as gifts. We had some kids literally run in on their way to a hiuse warming. Tohey expected to grab a kitten as a gift and go. They pitched temper tantrums when they were told no. There are good reasons for these policies.

This is always a problem at local shelters. Always want to surprise someone with a cute fluffy puppy or kitten and then comes the training, the biting, housesoiling and the people crack. They bring them back because they only thought about the moment and not the whole process required. Hope everyone thinks a little more before adopting.

Thank you for this. Our shelter discourages impulse adoptions and our cat area does not permit such adoptions. Animals aren't gifts, they are to be a part of your family and an animal can't adjust properly with all the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Wait until after the holidays and come pick out your new family member.

A lot of thought and research should go into getting a pet. Give an IOU & go through the process together. Never impulse buy especially at holiday time.

Everyone involved in the care of a pet should have a say in picking it. Also, there is just to much going on during the holidays - not really a great time for such a gift. However, a lot of thought needs to go into the decision to get a pet regardless of the season.

Good reminder for this time of year, chicks and rabbits are not appropriate Easter gifts either. They are not toys, and need a lot of care.

If you must give an animal for a Xmas gift, consider a gift certificate, let the person pick out their own.....for instance if they want a kitten, buy a carrier, some toys, or bed etc. wrap them up, the anticipation can be a lot of fun too. But, please do not buy from a pet store, puppy mills stay open because of these people..go to your local shelter....

They should require a waiting period around the holidays to cut down on impulse pet gifts. Same with rabbits at Easter.
