Pet Lovers Lash Out in Puerto Rico
October 19, 2007 | Matt Van Hoven
The recent massacre of dozens of dogs in Puerto Rico has spurred worldwide outcry from animal lovers.
Nadia Donato of New York created an online petition after she read a story about the incident. It quickly gained momentum and now carries the digital signature of some 6,000 animal lovers.
The 39 year-old plans to send the petition to Governor Anibal Acevedo in San Juan. A local activist will deliver the petition this Sunday.
Many Puerto Ricans have joined the movement, but there are also signatures from people as far off as Finland, Argentina, Malaysia and Austrailia.
Yesterday, 100 protesters marched to Puerto Rico's legislature to push for improved animal-rights laws.
Reportedly, the town of Barceloneta hired Julio Diaz's company to remove dogs and cats from a housing project.
The animal control workers allegedly threw 50 dogs pets and 30 strays they confiscated off a local bridge. Diaz says there's no way his workers were involved with the massacre.
He does admit that his company is responsible for collecting the animals.
Puerto Rico police chief Pedro Toledo says those responsible could face from six months to three years in prison.
