Pet Hoarding

Browse News

Nearly 1500 animal hoarding cases are found annually with the same sad scene – urine and feces covering floors, malnourished dogs and cats that need to be put down and even dead bodies. Although hoarders are generally lumped into one category, there are different types of hoarders, each with their own behaviors.

It’s not about the number of animals one owns, it’s how the animals are cared for on a regular basis. An animal hoarder is someone who has an excessive number of animals and doesn’t provide proper nutrition, sanitation and veterinary care. Hoarders sometimes fail to accept the condition of their pets and their home, which can begin to interfere with their daily life, health and socialization. Typically, close friends or relatives should be able to tell when the act of owning and caring for an animal turns into hoarding. The key to preventing this is early detection.

According to a document recently released by a team of people from the Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium (HARC), there are three types of hoarders: the overwhelmed caregiver, the rescuer and the exploiter. The overwhelmed caregiver initially cares for their pet and over time, realize that there is a problem. They may be socially isolated but accept getting help. The rescuer develops a compulsion to rescue animals with the belief that they are the only one who can. They find it hard to refuse new animals and steer clear of authorities. The exploiter wants animals to serve their own needs, deny the problem and reject help with the notion that they know best. They may make up excuses for their current circumstance but express no remorse. Some people will fit into a combination of these.

Another example that doesn’t fit into the other categories is the breeder-hoarder who initially breeds the animals and becomes overwhelmed with the number of animals and may not realize the severity of the situation. For instance, officials recently removed 237 dogs from the house of a 70-year-old woman in Corpus Christi, Texas who claimed she was breeding the dogs. A member of the city’s Animal Care Services department said the dogs had plenty of food and water but were covered in feces and urine. She said she thought the homeowner loved her dogs but the slow accumulation of dogs became too much for her to handle.

Some people become too embarrassed to admit having a problem and will isolate themselves – making it harder to seek help. If you know someone who may have a problem, the best thing for you to do is call your local authorities. They will have a better chance of intervening than you.

I always feel so sad for both the animals and the people involved. These people never seem to have anyone in their own lives to care for or help and use the animals as a crutch.

Most people think they are doing good taking care of animals that might not be taken care of otehrwise. Unfortunately they usually lack the funds to get them medically cared for, spayed/neutered, etc.

Sadly, I don't need to learn any more about hoarding - or the types of hoarders - as agency's like ours deal with the results of it all too often.

These people need to sent to therapy and diagnosised. Then they need to be treated. This is such a sad case. Those poor animals.

I can understand the basic "hording" instinct, but some people are sick and go overboard with this. I would love to take in more animals, but I am realistic about the amount of money it takes to properly care for them. And of course, they all need to have a fair share of your time and love.

I've had more than my share of animals in the past and wondered at times if it could be considered hording. This article is nicely clear on identifying hallmark signs of it, which I fortunately don't have. It's sad, and what seems common among many of the types is that they start out with good intentions and it snowballs from there. Very insightful article.

This is good information and may help people to spot circumstances with a friend or family member but there isn't enough of a mention here that hoarding is a mental condition.

It is a very sad situation for all involved, animals and people alike. They are issolated from family and friends and become to love their animals more than anything else. It is mental and sad. we see many cases like this each year

This is a very sad thing to happen to animals, but kinda sad for the hoarders. If the hoarder can't handle the animals they shouldn't deny that they aren't properly taken care for. Hoarding sounds like a mental problem or something like that.

Sadly hoarders frequently isolate from family and friends as part of the illness so ofter it goes years without notice. Friends and family can do a lot toward helping by staying in touch, even if the attention seems unwelcome, with friends or family members that try to isolate themselves. People these days often do not know their neighbors, or want to get involved, this is how these cases can become so bad before anything is done. We have dealt with over a dozen such cases this year alone, most of the time it has been years since anoune other than the hoarder has been inside the home.

These situations are awful for both the humans and animals. I think that each situation is different due to whatever caused the hoarding in the first place.

Alot of people have good intentions and their heart in the right spot but it gets too much and can't face to turn them over and then there's the others that just see animals as another object/possesion and not a family living creature and fail to give them the rights they deserve. I think kids raised around this grow and have the same mindset on how to treat animals and it keeps going until they're educated properly. There needs to be more animal education programs/classes for youth.

I agree with most points to everyone's comments. First I want to say that I believe most of these people have their hearts in the right place and they were doing something good by trying to do their part in saving a life. Hoarders most of the time suffer from a mental illness but I don't think all should be labeled that way. Not all communities are equipped with shelters or programs to help people in these situations including my community and therefore death of the animals is the only solution something that someone that cares and becomes attached to the animals can't accept. Yes this condition and situation is unacceptable that is why if you find someone in this situation hold a fund raiser to help vaccinate and spay/neuter those pets, foster them or find people who can, find willing rescue groups and shelters to adopt the ones that are healthy. Give them a support system don't treat them like a criminal for wanting to help. Remember they are human too and may not have known they would be so overwhelmed but commend them for trying because in the end that is what counts.

It seems to me that many of these hoarders need help as much as the animals. I have seen pictures of the homes these people live in, and they are worse than dumps! We need to get involved whenever we think there is a problem and call Social Services as well as Animal Control

Animal hoarding is a horrible thing, although they think they are saving the animal, they at times end up hurting the animals more than anything.

I find animal hoarding to be a very interesting psychological condition. Many times the hoarder thinks they are saving the animals when really they are causing more problems for the animals. It is really sad in most cases for both the animals and the person suffering from the mental illness. In our area we see cases of hoarding, particularly with cats. Many times the hoarder began by "saving" the animals and the care got out of control. These animals are often seized by animal control or the owner is forced to surrender them. In our area, we do not have enough room to house large numbers of animals at one time so unfortunately these animals are often euthanized when they are surrendered. It's very sad.

Although we all want to help animals, it is important to realize when we are helping and when we are hurting.

There are so many people out there who think that they are helping animals and can't see that they are not actually helping them. I don't understand how any person could live in the mess and disgusting conditions. It's horrible, and I would encourage anyone who suspects their friends/neighbors to call the authorities because it's not a healthy situation for the people or the animals.

I can see where you can get overwhelmed taking in strays. I decided I reached my limit and now work with my S.P.C.A. in finding homes for the stray cats that find me. I could never live in those conditions though.

I can see how easily someone could become a hoarder. How can you refuse to take in a dog that noone wants. You always feel you could maybe find a home for it, or you could at get it off the streets. I can see some no-kill shelters doing that. You think they are at least out of being fed and have a clean place to sleep, but you end up with three and four dogs in a kennel and not enough help to take care of them. It all starts with a good heart but usually ends bad.

It is a sad thing and even sadder for the animals. There has to be some kind of program for people to get involved in when this happens that the state can help and not just take away the animals and be PTS, there has to be another answer.

I had never heard about this until I started helping at our shelter. At first it made me mad, then I realized what a disease, mental illness, that it is part of.People should report them to authorities not to be mean but to help the person out of the situation, and especially to save the pets lives.

Shows that towns and cities need to be involved in animal situations-many towns refuse to supply resources for animal issues. The public has to make it a priority.

i think most hoarders think they are doing the right thing for the animals. they think no one else can or will take care of them. in a way they are right there is a real problem with overpopulation in cats and dogs and not enough programs to help them. i can easily see how hard it is to keep mulitple animals in a clean enviromaent. if you are not properly equipped or cannot afford to proprly take care of these animals then you are not really helping them are you? call your local shelter for help and advice before a situation gets out of hand.

Unfortunately hoarders are usually socially isolated therefore no one sees the conditions or they ignore it along with the hoarder. We need the public, mail people, cable people, anyone with access to homes to become our eyes and ears and report these problems or potential problems to the proper authorities.
