Pet Health: UK Calls for Dog Blood Bank

Browse News

With the availability of pet insurance and high tech medical procedures, more and more pet lovers are opting to put their furry loved ones under the knife.

But cardiac vet Dr. Dan Brockman says blood needed during animal surgery is the biggest constraint.

The UK is taking on the issue by calling for a national dog blood bank – with the aim of opening non-profit centers around the country to collect, store and distribute donations.

One reason they're starting with dogs is canine blood doesn't require a match. Cats on the other hand, require a donor with the same blood type.

Private blood services already exist both in the UK and in the US, but scientists say those methods are too piecemeal.

Some oppose the donations all together because animals can't volunteer themselves.

But the collection process is similar to the human procedure – the animal is relaxed by soft music and dim lighting while the blood is drained. It takes about 15 minutes overall.

The UK movement has just begun. It is yet to be seen if it will land stateside – but tell us what you think about a national blood bank for animals by posting comments under this story.

It sounds like a wonderful idea to me, I would hate to lose a pet because it needed blood & none was available!

Somehow, some way there needs to be a national blood bank for pets and animals. Are we naive' enough to think that pets don't need blood also? Something needs to be put in place for them ASAP.

Interesting that dogs don't require matching and cats do.

The fact some object that dogs may be "forced" to donate is strange since dogs are forced to wear collars, be vaccinated, go poo and pee on demand, stay where we wish them , eat what we choose to give them and myriad other restrictions on their freedom to choose. C'mon, it is a small imposition on them and most , being dogs and so pretty giving, would not mind it it they were to choose.

but if it would have been thought of earlier we could have saved so many other animals

not a bad idea!!

I would be willing to have my dog donate. I responded to an ad for this once, but it was for an area that was about six hours drive from my home.

The local college uses donor dogs on a regular basis. The dogs are real calm through the process and appear to not be bothered by the process. I think it is a good idea to have a dog blood bank. Just dont stock up on more than is really needed.

i would be in favor of having a name bank with the names of the dogs who are potential donors. i dont think its wise to have the blood in the bank. its doesnt last long enough to keep it indefinately

The idea raises too many questions for me. I find the entire process revolting. Blood is too fragile to store very long and maintain quality. Do they know how long it takes a dog to replenish the blood he gave? Some ideas are best left alone. This is one of them.

I think it's a great idea. I have greyhound, who are great blood donors. If there were something like this here, they would participate.

the vet hospital that my mom works has asked that we keep our english lab available because sometimes they need an emergency blood supply since they do many surgerys there...Dusty has donated twice so far and he seems no worse for it:)

We (the hospital I used to work at) were the local blood bank. Some blood was from owners pets with permission of course and some came from shelter pets.

Don't know why, but never gave it a thought as to where the blood would come from for a dogs surgery. I do remember when I was much younger seeing a dog or two at the old vets office and they receptionist told me that their job was to donate blood for surgeries.

But to the point, I agree that more and more people are opting to have their pets go under the knife and that there would be a need for a blood bank.

I think this is something that should be monitored very carefully, I wouldn't want anything to happen to the donors.

This sounds great. Although I'm a little cautious about volunteering a pet for donation, it will help so many others.

What a great idea. We need to be more aware of this program. Is a excellent subject..

I heard that Ohio State has a program like this and they use retired greyhounds that they rescue from being put down and vet and than find new homes for the dogs.

This is very important. Transfusions can save a life and are crucial. Penn comes around with their dog blood mobile, so it's kind of cool. All the different blood types, it's sometimes hard to find a dog that can be used.

I never knew that animals needed blood during surgery. I feel a little ignorant now. With that said, I would guess that a wait-and-see-what-happens-in-the-UK attitude would be best.

If dog blood is universal The vets always have dogs for this. Just call the owners of your clinic and ask. I think that most animal owners would not think twice on donating their pets blood. Cats on they other hand might need a sibling for blood.

I think that England is far more advanced in animal welfare than we are. I do have friends who have donated their dogs' blood to local vets. There is a need people just aren't all that aware of it.

wow, we do surgery almost everyday and i cant recall 1 pet needing blood due to the surgery. we even took a huge mass with the spleen off a pet and it did great. I know we need for problems with fleas and ticks and hookworms but there is always a donor with fresh blood to be found. I wonder if they will be spending alot of money on this and wasting alot of blood.

I think as long as there is no funds involved it could work. You know there will be the greedy who will do anything for money. But if I knew that my dog's blood could save the life of another dog, I would do it. But then again, I would do almost anything to help save animals. Almost.

Sooner or later society will wake up to the fact that selling body parts, including blood, is a huge business that makes lots of money. The whole situation needs to be thought through and re-addressed. When we start working on it for humans, we can be thinking about it for animals, too. Blood saves lives, no question. It's an important issue with or without the money angle.

This is a good idea for dogs and cats. Think how awful it would be if the only thing standing between your pet and restored health was lack of blood.
