Pet Funerals on the Rise

Browse News

INDIANA – People forced to say goodbye to their four-legged friends now have the option of having a funeral before laying them to rest. The first pet funeral home, Pet Angel Memorial Center opened in 2004 in Carmel Ind., near Indianapolis, and franchises are quickly opening nationwide.

Coleen Ellis came up with the idea of starting a pet funeral service right after the death of her beloved dog, Mico. At the time, there were no pet funeral services available. She wanted to provide pets with the same high-quality after-care that humans receive because in most homes, animals are just as much a part of the family.

When Pet Angel first opened its doors, few calls came in each week. Over time, it has grown very quickly and serves 3,000 clients, about 90 each month. Ellis hopes to see 500 locations open nationwide within the next seven years. She recently decided on locations in Tampa, Fla. and Wichita, Kan.

Ellis previously worked in human funeral services and thinks in 10 to 15 years, using pet services will be the norm. She said Pet Angel is setting the standard for pet funeral homes.

Pet Angel serves mainly cats and dogs but Ellis said she has seen rats, birds and even goldfish. Most clients who use the service opt for cremation and are given a mold of the animal’s paw and a clip of fur. They also have the option of printing their pet’s picture onto plates or blankets. Cremations run from $230 to $430, depending on the size of the animal and the type of service.

Ellis was questioned about her services being too excessive and said that it’s no one’s place to determine what’s appropriate for someone else’s pet.

This might be the first chain of pet funeral services but I know about a pet cemetery in Maryland where one could have a service if one choose to do so. I first heard about that place in Maryland a few years ago.

I love my pets as much as the next person but i think this is taking it too far, I agree that a donation to a shelter makes alot more sense. It sounds like a nice way to make alot of money off of pet lovers. Next thing you know the latest thing will be to have your beloved pet stuffed so you can keep it forever. Our much loved two cats are out in our own backyard and it didn't cost a cent.

It's nice to have this available if this is how you want to do it, but I like our own little personal ceremonies inthe backyard.

I think if you want to have a funeral, that would be your business ~ but I think that there are better ways to honor a pet that has died. Donating to your local humane society, for instance! But when your pet dies, I guess you have to do whatever it takes to grieve in your own way.

Nice idea. Should help with closure. I doubt I could ever afford to be so extravagant though...

Having lost pets over the yars, I can understand the grief, but wouldn't it be better if people would make a contribution to shelters instead of extravagances for departed pets?

I think this is a wonderful idea and it should be up to each pet owner how they want to memoralize their pet and where they want to bury them. No, it is not for everyone but it is nice to have choices isn't it?

I think some poeple are cashing in on the pet trend. Sorry, I don't think we should use lots of land to bury pets.

How nice to be able to honor the family pet the same way humans are. There are pet cemetaries..why not funerals as well? I would like to treat my pet with this dignity and love.

I'd like to see the total cost of the funeral, not just the creamation...this sure indicates that people have excess funds....its good to properly dispose of the body, but not get carried away.

Although many consider this a bit too much I can see the need for closure for some pet-owners/lovers.

I am not a fan of this. I totally understand why someone would want this, but it does seem a bit "much". I think the pet can be remembered and honored without all the "hoopla". The money that is spent on a funeral can be given to a charitable pet organization.

This is something personal. It this helps someone in the grieving process, I'm all for it. For me, however, I would feel better making a donation to an animal shelter in my dog's memory.

We dont have a lot of extra money so I couldnt have a funeral for a pet if I wanted to, but I think my money would be better spent donating to a shelter and burying our pets ourselves, its hard to do, we have had to recently, I love the idea of the paw print though, that makes a wonderful memorial for them.

It's so hard to say goodbye, I wouldn't want to prolong it with a funeral. I suppose some people may find it comforting. I'm sure it's expensive too.

I guess if a person feels they need a funeral for their pet, it's up to them. It's not for me--but we're all different.

Mixed feelings about this. I understand the desire to have a pet funeral. But can't family members just do something themselves. I don't think non-family members would appreciate being invited to a pet funeral (no matter how much the pet meant to the family). I would rather just keep it private and respectful.

I don't know about this one. I think that making a donation to your local shelter in your pets name might be a better option. I don't like the idea of someone profitting off of the death of my pet.

If there is a market for it and folks want this type of service, then it's their call. Yes, money donated to good cause would be my option also.

This is interesting. I do think as a businesswoman she should open homes in New York and California. I think she would have a lot of clients using this service in those states.

If holding services for your beloved pet helps fine, but....Americans go overboard with our elaborate funeral "arrangements" for our loved ones, and it was only a matter of time until we began to follow the same expensive path when it came to our animal companions. We have cremated one sweet cat (his ashes reside in our curio cabinet with an ET statue as constant companion). The cost escapes me now, but it certainly did not exceed $100. Our cat Spikey rests in the wetlands behind our house, and our much beloved cat Ralphie lies under his favorite tree in our backyard--a spot he was very fond of in all seasons and a place that we visit often. If one can easily afford such services, just think what a few hundred dollars could do for a local rescue group or shelter.

Not surprised, after all our pets are family too. However, our dog Sunny passed in
December and she is buried in my blue flower garden where I can visit everyday. We're placing a bench close by and some blue perinial flowers.

To each his own. If you can afford it and want to do it go for it. A donation in memory of will put your money to good use for all the animals who do not have homes.

I have had all my pets cremated and plan on their urns being buried with me when I die. Personally, when one of my pets die I just want to be alone, dealing with other people in public does not appeal to me. Her cremation costs are very high. But if you have the money and this gives you solace then go for it.
