Pet Dog Mauls Sleeping Infant

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- A pet dog that killed a two-month old boy in Hawaii has been euthanized, marking the close to the first fatal dog attack case in O'ahu in recent years.

The baby, Iopeka Liptak, died from head injuries within minutes of the attack on Saturday night.

The baby's 31-year-old mother and another relative present at the home were also treated for dog bites.

The family dog, described as a medium-sized, mixed-breed female, apparently attacked the infant without provocation.

"We have no information on this dog," Humane Society spokeswoman Kawehi Yim told The Honolulu Advertiser. "No microchip, no tag, nothing. There's no identification on this animal."

The dog, Penelope Rose, belonged to the baby's great-aunt, Opal Sao.

Sao says she left the baby sleeping on her bed when she went to her kitchen for a drink of water on Saturday night. The dog was initially by Sao's side, and when she realized the dog had left the room she ran to the bedroom.

Sao found the dog leaning over the mauled baby, which she then picked up and handed to her niece.

"The dog went wild," Sao told The Honolulu Advertiser. "Penny grabbed my niece's leg. She was attacking her. I attacked the dog to get her off. Penny's behavior was something I'd never seen before. I didn't recognize her."

The dog was placed into isolation early Sunday morning and was then euthanized Monday afternoon at Sao's request.

The dog, which had never attacked anyone, lived mainly outside in a kennel with Sao's other dogs.

"The dog was in the kennel 90 percent of the time, except for the past month, and then he was in the yard," neighbor Bob Vidinha reportedly said.

One dog trainer of O'ahu, Dave Pang, says basic training and socialization might have prevented this attack.

"Proper training makes the difference between having a good dog and a bad dog," he said. "That's the only way they know how to respond [if not trained] by attacking."

This is the first time O'ahu, the third largest of the Hawaiian islands, has seen a fatal dog attack, police officials say.

Tragedy also struck in Kaufman County, Texas, last week, when three dogs attacked an eight-year-old girl and her 54-year-old grandmother.

The grandmother saw the dogs -- two pit bulls and a mixed-breed dog -- maul the girl and tried to intervene, only suffering injuries herself.

The girl had to be airlifted to the nearest hospital but but she and her grandmother are expected to make a full recovery.

Holy cow! That is so horrible and sad! I pray that the owner of the dog can go on with her life without guilt. I can not imagine being in a situation like that. I believe that if you are going to have a dog, you shouldn't keep it in a kennel 90% of the time and then let it in the house all of a sudden and think that everything is going to be alright. Sad sad story!

This was a terrible, preventable tragedy. I don't care how well you think you know your dog, it should never be left alone around a infant or small child. The woman should have made sure that the baby was in a safe place while the dog was in the house. Babies and children make fast, jerky movements that resemble prey. Plus, I sure it didn't help that the dog was kept outside in a kennel most of the time and was probably undersocialized. But that is secondary to the fact that the dog was not being supervised or contained while the baby was in the house.

This just confirms the need for appropriate socialization of your pets to new situations. A good family dog will revert to it's natural instincts when it is scarred, stressed, hurt, etc. It is so important to ensure a dog's comfort and security in a situation, and there is not a good reason to leave a dog unattended in any unfamiliar situation. My heart goes out to the family of this infant, a double tragedy that certainly could have been avoided.

I really do not know what to say about this attack. Could it have been prevented? I really don't know. Perhaps if people would start to pay more attention to t eir animals and not just pen them and leave them alone and then expect them to be social in situations like this. It is very sad.

A terrible tradegy and one that could have been averted. Leaving a dog--any dog--alone with a two month old infant is a very risky thing, let alone leaving an unsocialized dog that has spent ninety percent of its life in a kennel. This poor family made a heartbreaking mistake--a mistake that they will live with the rest of their lives.

They don't mention whether this dog had been around children before, or if it was tested for rabies or any other medical issue that could have caused an unprovoked attack.

It's doubly sad that this horrible tragedy possibly could have been prevented. I don't mean to sound harsh-- I understand these people obviously didn't know that being kept outside 24/7 with other dogs will create that pack mentality. It seems from this story that the dog was not a house-dog/pet. It's just a darn shame that they didn't know.

Mary, I agree. And I hope the owners get educated before it happens again. There is so much information out there that not being educated about your pets is wrong and this is why we have bad pet owners which cause trouble for the good ones.

How sad! I can't even imagine such a situation. It reminds you that as much as we love our animals, we have to remember that they don't always think like we do. It is a scary truth.

This story seems to offer more questions than answers. The dog was kenneled 90p of the time and then in the house with an infant who was sleeping on the bed just to start.

There definitely are a lot of questions that have arisen. Hopefully they can figure out what happened. I am sure it didn't help that the dog was in a kennel most of the time. She probably didn't know how to act or what the baby was. It is just a sad situation overall.

Sounds like the dog had built up frustration from being kenneled most of the time. The dog probably was not used to the baby, didnt know what the baby was and didnt know how to act from being not properly socialized, etc. What a tragedy.

I assume that is one of the worst things a family has to go through. Sad because it very well could have been prevented is right. People take these notes and be aware for the sake of a life.

Whether the owner of the dog is negligent--she was IMHO--she ceratinly didn't expect this horror to happen. I am sorry they didn't show or say the conditions of the dog's life living in a "kennel" for 90% of her life. I can only imagine a dog seeing an infant for the first time--the size, smells, sounds, and the movements--were much like a prey animal to her. I think the baby may have triggered that prey response which is normal for a dog that has not been properly socialized to people, especially infants. She continued her attack when grabbed by the owner becasue her aggression was already heightened. That dog only knew how to act around other dogs. It's awful the baby lost her life as well as the dog due to what sadly goes on all the time--keeping your dog outdoors and not part of your family in the home to learn our body language and that we are not prey.

Hopefully people can learn from this incident. It is sad that lives had to be lost and changed by it, but if nothing else comes from this, let us hope that it prevents more deaths like this.

We've found with our rescue that the vast majority of dogs that were "outside dogs" (especially when chained) tend to be dog aggressive, and be very hard to acclimate to being an in-the-home pet. There are several theories about why that may be-- I don't know enough to know for sure why, but I have absolutely seen this in person.

What a sad story. I agree . . a dog needs socialization so they know the correct behavior around people. But even in that case, I would never leave a dog alone with a baby . . you just never know.

I feel so bad for the baby and the family. If your going to own a dog and keep it locked up in a kennel without human interaction, something like this is bound to happen. The animal should never have been left in the house while the child was there, not knowing how it might react to the baby.

You are correct. Dogs need socialization and to meet and greet people of all ages while supervised. Living in a kennel is no life for the dog and to suddenly come across "prey" with new smells and weird cries is obviously a huge mistake--the poor baby (and the dog) paid a big price. How sad for all.

Dogs have to be handled and be socialized with to be safe around people. A dog that is constantly kept in a cage or chained up then taken into a home will not know how to interact with humans. It takes a lot of time to take care of a pet and handle them you can't just leave them be and then expect for them to act like a lap dog.

This is a terrible situation that could have been avoided had the owner had more sense. For one the dog has been out in a kennel most of his life so therefore the owner could not be sure of his temperament with other people much less an infant. Second this baby should not be laid on a bed and left alone for even a second, too many disasters can happen such as this. How can the owner say she has never seen this side of her dog before, well of course not, she says he has been outside in a cage. How can she possibly know his personality very well.

If the dog spent most of the time in a kennel, then common sense would tell one not to leave the dog alone with a baby sinse they really didn't know how the dog would act. Very tragic.

That is so terrible! I can not even imagine what the mother is feeling like... I wonder why the dog did that? Maybe he did not have enough excersize? A tired dog is a good dog! My dogs became a lot less destructive when I started to go on hour walks with them in the evening. They have not chewed a shoe in over a year!

Why on earth would anyone leave an infant lying on a bed by themselves in the first place? I was shocked that someone would allow a kennel kept dog into the house with a defenseless baby that was sleeping. Shocked, doesnt even really describe it I think...

I was shocked that this dog wouldbe allowed inside with a newborn when it has spent most of it's life outside in a kennel. This dog was not properly socialized. What an awful burden for this family to bear. Even though my dog is trained and well-socialized, I aways kennel her when children come to visit, because you never know......and she is not used to being around children. A leason learned. Better safe than sorry.

I agree with SandraR....an animal is an animal and we tend to forget that. We are surprised when a dog acts like a dog and let's face it, many of us treat our pets like they are human.
This is not the first infant killed by the family dog and it is extremely heartbreaking.
The most important lesson is:
NEVER leave a dog alone with a child.

"should have".... "would have..." it's easy to point fingers afterwards. It's a terrible horrible accident. And yes, a dog who is 90% of the time outside in a kennel probably "should not have" been alone with a baby. Can you imagine the burden this mother will have to carry on her shoulders for the rest of her life?

How did the dog go from being outside in the kennel 90% of the time to being inside and with a sleeping infant? I do not understand. It seems someone left this animal with a child that they shouldn't have. This dog was obviously not socialized and not used to being around people or children. I really feel for that family and for the aunt, but I really don't understand why they had the dog there in the first place.

Please be careful with what you assume "they had to have known!"

This may be the case or maybe they didn't. If you read the story, they didn't knowingly leave the dog with the baby. This was a horrible accident and it is unnecessary for people, like yourself, to throw out damaging accusations.
