Pet Dog Mauls Sleeping Infant

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- A pet dog that killed a two-month old boy in Hawaii has been euthanized, marking the close to the first fatal dog attack case in O'ahu in recent years.

The baby, Iopeka Liptak, died from head injuries within minutes of the attack on Saturday night.

The baby's 31-year-old mother and another relative present at the home were also treated for dog bites.

The family dog, described as a medium-sized, mixed-breed female, apparently attacked the infant without provocation.

"We have no information on this dog," Humane Society spokeswoman Kawehi Yim told The Honolulu Advertiser. "No microchip, no tag, nothing. There's no identification on this animal."

The dog, Penelope Rose, belonged to the baby's great-aunt, Opal Sao.

Sao says she left the baby sleeping on her bed when she went to her kitchen for a drink of water on Saturday night. The dog was initially by Sao's side, and when she realized the dog had left the room she ran to the bedroom.

Sao found the dog leaning over the mauled baby, which she then picked up and handed to her niece.

"The dog went wild," Sao told The Honolulu Advertiser. "Penny grabbed my niece's leg. She was attacking her. I attacked the dog to get her off. Penny's behavior was something I'd never seen before. I didn't recognize her."

The dog was placed into isolation early Sunday morning and was then euthanized Monday afternoon at Sao's request.

The dog, which had never attacked anyone, lived mainly outside in a kennel with Sao's other dogs.

"The dog was in the kennel 90 percent of the time, except for the past month, and then he was in the yard," neighbor Bob Vidinha reportedly said.

One dog trainer of O'ahu, Dave Pang, says basic training and socialization might have prevented this attack.

"Proper training makes the difference between having a good dog and a bad dog," he said. "That's the only way they know how to respond [if not trained] by attacking."

This is the first time O'ahu, the third largest of the Hawaiian islands, has seen a fatal dog attack, police officials say.

Tragedy also struck in Kaufman County, Texas, last week, when three dogs attacked an eight-year-old girl and her 54-year-old grandmother.

The grandmother saw the dogs -- two pit bulls and a mixed-breed dog -- maul the girl and tried to intervene, only suffering injuries herself.

The girl had to be airlifted to the nearest hospital but but she and her grandmother are expected to make a full recovery.

I totally agree with the trainer about the need of exsercise and the training. I really feel bad both for the family loss AND the dog. I think people underestimate the work and dedication (and responsibility) that come with having a dog.

A dog that was never socialized and spent 90 percent of its time in a kennel is expected to be in a house with an infant and have nothing go wrong. All it would have taken was basic training and socialization...

People are idiots, and sadly, a baby and a dog had to pay for it.

Its sad too think how many people think the dog is at fault here. The owner if anything is, when you keep an animal in a kennel that percentage of the time and then allow it around people is unacceptable. If you are unsure of how the animal will react, keep the door shut and don't let it around things smaller than it. I feel bad for the dog and the owner thinking that she was responsible enough to own the dog and babysit.

this is why people should be licensed to have pets... something along the lines of "You must be (this) smart in order to be allowed to care for an animal." Poor little girl, and poor dog.

How tragic! I don't believe you should ever leave infants or small children with animals unattended. This dog was in a kennel most of the time so it was not a well-socialized animal.

I agree, perhaps if the baby had been in a crib instead of on the bed ,sadly it is to late for this child but may save another

these are people who have no business with an infant in their care, much less multiple dogs. common sense would have prevented such a terrible tragedy from happening. i'm imaging their gene pool should have been declared a drought area.

This is a very sad story indeed. The first thing that came into my head is that you should never leave a baby unattended on a bed even if they are sleeping. The baby could easily wake up and roll of the bed. Secondly, the dog was obviously not socialized if she was kept in an outdoor kennel 90% of the time. Perhaps this whole tragedy would have been avoided if they had the foresight to avoid both things.

It makes me really angry when people don't socialize their dogs then say they don't understand when something like this happens. Kids shouldn't be left unattended where a dog has access to them, especially if they are not familiar with one another. I don't understand how this woman would have known the dog was any different than usual when it spend 90 percent of its time in a kennel outside.
The people are the problem, and the dog is the loser every time. I know it sounds harsh... but really, if she didn't have time to socialize the dog she shouldn't have had it - especially where it could get to the baby.

Very sad story for the poor baby that lost his life, as well as the dog. Dogs are still animals, and instinctive by nature. If we as owners do not take on the responsibility of training and socializing our pets we are partially to blame for their actions. It is very uncommon for a dog to just "snap" without being triggered. You should not have a child unsupervised with a pet, especially one that is unfamiliar with children.

Just goes to show that people need to remember that dogs, however wonderfully human at times, are animals. We, as honors, must take the responsibility to train them and treat them in a way that keeps them emotionally balanced - so things like this do not happen.

that is so sad what happened to the little boy. if the was always kept in a kennel outside i dont see why it was in the house especially when there was a baby present. I think the dog wasnt properly socialized. Did he even have his rabies shot?

Why would you ever leave a tiny baby near an animal it hasn't been around before? I never leave my 5 month old daughter alone with our cats - even though they both seem okay with her. Animals are animals and they bite - the woman should have had that dog with her instead of leaving her alone with the baby. Very sad story!

Wow again. I agree, the family is dealing with something that should have never happened. Babies have so many different smells that it could have easily provoked the dog. Everyone lost in this situation.

WOW! What a horrible thing to have happen. i can't even imagine the pain and suffering this family is going through. And for the poor dog,it probably didn't know what the little thing was on the bed and maybe felt threatened and just reacted the way it would naturally. What a sad sad story. :(

Horrible, HORRIBLE story. All dog owners need to be responsible...sounds like this dog wasn't socialized at all (in a kennel outside 90% of the time!) and to leave it around a newborn was not very sensible. Still...I can't even imagine what the family is going through.

Okay, first of all, who keeps their dog outside 90% of the time and doesn't really interact much with it (as hinted at by the fact that it lives outside "with the other dogs") and then brings it into a house with a tiny infant. And then doesn't supervise the dog 100%. I am just shocked at how dumb some people are. And what sort of tragedy it can lead to.

I'm also willing to bet that this mystery mutt soon becomes a pitbull since that's how the media likes to work. Don't know what breed it is and it bit someone? Must be a pit!!

people should not allow any dog access to an infant. Even a usually friendly dog might view a baby as prey rather than a human.

Stories like these are so sad. I do not condone dogs mauling people, but I don't understand why owners are not more careful. Dogs don't see babies the way people do. I believe they can see them as prey especially if they are not socialized. People need to be more careful. I trust my dog nearly 100%, but I wouldn't take any chances. I have seen him go after rabbits, squirrels, etc. When that drive kicks in, he is only focused on his goal. People need to be more cautious. They are our pets, but they are animals first.

I agree with ens2e. It is very important to supervise and socialize your pets around children. Keeping them in the kennel or in the back yard without constant humane or animal interaction can be a disaster. My prayers are with the family of this precious baby that lost their life. And also for the dog who wasn't cared for the way they needed to be cared for and loved.

I feel so sorry for this family who has lost this child. What a sad thing to have happened to them. I hope that people who have children will reconsider their pets being left along with their children, especially pets that have not been socialized.

so true no amount of analysis will bring back time.. I just hope other people can look at this and learn from it.. unfortunately the attack will be put on whatever breed of dog or dogs in general. I hope people see that leaving a dog outside without any kindof training and socialization would just be like putting any wild dog or cat in your living room and expecting them to follow the rules of the home and be properly trained..
I feel really sorry for their loss.. I couldn't imagine.
