Pet Dog Mauls Sleeping Infant

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- A pet dog that killed a two-month old boy in Hawaii has been euthanized, marking the close to the first fatal dog attack case in O'ahu in recent years.

The baby, Iopeka Liptak, died from head injuries within minutes of the attack on Saturday night.

The baby's 31-year-old mother and another relative present at the home were also treated for dog bites.

The family dog, described as a medium-sized, mixed-breed female, apparently attacked the infant without provocation.

"We have no information on this dog," Humane Society spokeswoman Kawehi Yim told The Honolulu Advertiser. "No microchip, no tag, nothing. There's no identification on this animal."

The dog, Penelope Rose, belonged to the baby's great-aunt, Opal Sao.

Sao says she left the baby sleeping on her bed when she went to her kitchen for a drink of water on Saturday night. The dog was initially by Sao's side, and when she realized the dog had left the room she ran to the bedroom.

Sao found the dog leaning over the mauled baby, which she then picked up and handed to her niece.

"The dog went wild," Sao told The Honolulu Advertiser. "Penny grabbed my niece's leg. She was attacking her. I attacked the dog to get her off. Penny's behavior was something I'd never seen before. I didn't recognize her."

The dog was placed into isolation early Sunday morning and was then euthanized Monday afternoon at Sao's request.

The dog, which had never attacked anyone, lived mainly outside in a kennel with Sao's other dogs.

"The dog was in the kennel 90 percent of the time, except for the past month, and then he was in the yard," neighbor Bob Vidinha reportedly said.

One dog trainer of O'ahu, Dave Pang, says basic training and socialization might have prevented this attack.

"Proper training makes the difference between having a good dog and a bad dog," he said. "That's the only way they know how to respond [if not trained] by attacking."

This is the first time O'ahu, the third largest of the Hawaiian islands, has seen a fatal dog attack, police officials say.

Tragedy also struck in Kaufman County, Texas, last week, when three dogs attacked an eight-year-old girl and her 54-year-old grandmother.

The grandmother saw the dogs -- two pit bulls and a mixed-breed dog -- maul the girl and tried to intervene, only suffering injuries herself.

The girl had to be airlifted to the nearest hospital but but she and her grandmother are expected to make a full recovery.

There was a case like this in Tulsa Ok. The mom & grandma where asleep in the other room and the baby got attacted by a dog and died. It is just heart breaking to hear of this. It's so sad.

Socialization and supervision are the two things that had either been done this tragedy could have been avoided. Had the dog spent 90% of his time with humans she probably would not have beed as quick to see a small one as prey as a dog who spends 90% of her time in a kennel. Even with my own dogs who are very well socialized and trained, I would never allow them to be left unsupervised with an infant, who may look, sound and smell like prey to a dog.

I think that the key here is supervision. When I got our dog Rocky I didn't leave him alone with my grandchildren until I was sure it was OK. Sometimes it is clear why a dog acts a certain way, but not always. Better safe than sorry!

I have to agree with most people on here, a, this was a poorly titled article, and b, the woman should be locked up herself keeping her dogs like that. Who in the world expects a dog to be completely fine with a infant child when they are not even used to being in a house or around people in general. Yes, the woman shuld not have left the baby alone with the dog in the house, but not b/c dogs are dangerous around children, but a poorly trained and badly taken care of dog around anyone is bad. Socializing is important with dogs, not just with other dogs but with humans and even sometimes other animals. also. This just pisses me off at people who care for animals that way.

This just reenforces my thought that dogs should NEVER be left unsupervised with children. I have two labs that are big lovers but when friends come over with their children i always supervise the interaction for the dogs sake as well as he children.

Wow brought tears to my eyes, People need to realize if you have an animal (dog )you cant keep it caged or tied up all the time they need love and structure as we do or they can go crazy , Proper training and socializing could prevent things like this from happening . How unfortunate for this family, My heart is aching for there loss.

This is awful. I recently heard of a similar incedent in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area. A young dog gnawled at the feet of an infant while in its play swing. I believe the father had let the baby their on his way to work, and the mother and grandmother were asleep in other rooms.

I was just teaching my neice today, that are dogs are nothing to be feared. However, I can see why everyone should play with caution.

This is so sad and why so many people don't trust dogs! What they don't understand though, is if you socialize and exercise your dog correctly, they're not incredibly erratic; they're extremely balanced.

Very very distressing... what a terrible situation for all involved. I agree that it does appear from the story that the dog wasn't properly socialized and it was left outside alot. The reality is that is the life of many many dogs, and not all outside dogs are improperly socialized. The dog also went on to attack the family members, which it apparently didn't have a history of doing... It sounds like there's more to it than simply lack of proper socialization.

This is so sad and horrible. No one will ever know why the dog attacked. It's important that dogs are properly socialized and trained, but no matter how well a person thinks they have done this or how good they think their dog is, they still must be watched when they are with people, especially children, and other animals.

There you go right there. The dog lived outside in a kennel away from people. So the dog does not view the people are part of a pack. The owner should be put in jail not just the dog getting euthanized. She didn't see it coming because she doesn't know her dog. The dog lives outside.

That is so sad and I feel horrible for that baby's family. I have to disagree with a lot of the responses on here. There ARE cases where something can be wrong with the dog and I don't think that possibility should be overlooked. My black lab was fully cared for, loved, and trained at a training school. One day as I was sitting next to her, not even touching her, out of nowhere she leapt up at my face to attack. Thankfully, I was not too badly injured, I was able to get a finger on the inside of her collar to keep the incident from being worse. I have no idea what prompted her to do this but I can promise you that it didn't occur because of an "irresponsible owner."

I agree. I would say that 99.9% of these types of incidents can be prevented if the owners take responsibility and manage the situations. Obedience class may have helped, never allowing the dog near the baby would have helped, not getting pregnant would have solved the problem. The dog was there first. Irresponsible people irk me!

Another sad headline in a paper "Pet Dog Mauls Sleeping Infant"...It should be "Irresponsible dog owner let her unsocialized dog be close to an infant and kill it"...I feel sorry for the infant, the parents and the dog...Poor dog was kept in a kennel 90 % of the time and then was allowed just to walk in to a place with a sleeping infant, smell all the new smells, etc. and the owner expected for that dog to act friendly towards humans that the dogs probably rarely encountered...That's a great way to cause serious trouble no matter what kind of dog it is. I absolutely agree with other ZOOTOOers here about that you can't blame the dog or the breed - it's a dog owner's responsibility to socialize and train a dog properly. Dogs only follow their instincts and if the're not socialized and trained, their instincts are all they follow because they weren't taught any rules. That owner failed her dog and caused a great tragedy to her own family...Very, very sad... :(

We had a similar news story in Tulsa not long ago. . . two dogs "allegedly" mauled an infant who was in a swing. One was a puppy and was immediately euthanized. My kids scream if one pinches the other. . . how could the people not hear the baby crying? In most cases, the parents need to be more attentive to both the children and the pets.

I'm sorry for the baby's family, the baby, and the dog. The dog's owner should be cited for irresponsibility. This DEFINITELY should not have happened and could have been prevented.

I feel bad that the infant lost its life. However, if the dog was kept in a kennel almost its entire life, then it is the owner's fault that the dog was not socialized.

I also do not like the fact that zootoo made an image of a pitbull and a baby, implying that the dog that attacked the baby was a pit bull. It is things like this that feul the media against pits. Did you know that pitbulls aren't even the main dogs that attack/bite people each year? Usually its a little dog breed. I know that a few years ago it was Cocker Spaniels.

I am dissapointed that zootoo would stoop so low to add to the pitbull descrimination.

It sounds like this lady's dogs were kept outside in a kennel & not socialized w/ people let alone an infant. I am not sure why you would have a group of dogs in a kennel together in the 1st place unless you were a shelter or rescue. Dogs need 1 on 1 attention & love. Training is very important. A dog that's not used to being around humans besides when their thrown some food & water shouldn't be expected to behave properly inside the home w/ an infant. They have not learned the proper commands or learned how to behave correctly indoors. Why did this lady have this particular dog in the house that night in the 1st place? She ran when she seen the dog was not @ her side! Kind of makes you think she panicked when she thought the dog might be in the baby's room. I wouldn't have had the dog in the house if I had a question of the dog being aggressive. The owner did the right thing by having the dog put down after the incident. It's just sad it happened at all. I hope they look into the rest of this lady's dogs & their condition & demeanor. Maybe require her to not keep so many if she can't provide training & socialization to prevent any more problems for the family.

What an absolutely horrifying story. I feel so terribly sad for this poor infant. To think, training & socializing this dog could have prevented this! It seems that the majority of incidents like this are due to a negligent pet owner! I hope that they have learned a lesson in some way. Unfortunately, this precious child is who paid the price!

As you read the story, it just shows you how it almost ALWAYS ends up being an irresponsible pet owner. The dog being kept in a kennel 90% of the time....what were these people thinking? (especially the owner) Because of her being irresponsible, 2 lives had to end - this is on her hands. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family that lost their baby. What a sad - sad story cause this was definitely preventable.

And, I don't think the dog in the picture is a pit-bull. Doesn't look like one to me. But I do agree on people need to lay off the breed. They are dogs just like any other, they can't help who's hands they fall into.

That looks like a stereotypical pit bull to me. The person who put this photo together couldn't have picked a more run of the mill image to use. Classic large skull pit bull head, and brown brindle color.

Wow. There are so many ways this could have been prevented. It's really unfortunate that this happened. Usually when you have pets and are expecting a baby, you put everything in the house (like all the new furnature and stuff) in first before the baby's even born so the dog gets used to it. And the dog that has lived outside for basically it's whole life should have not been let inside with an infant. I don't approve of having only outside dogs but people will do as they do. This whole story is just really, really sad.

Wow..sorry to the family...but while I am no advocate for pit bulls, nor am I against them, I do not like the fact that when I first viewed the ugly picture of the dog and baby, Immediately assumed it was a pitbull because of the ugly picture portrayed. Just wish they would wait to name a breed on this subject before they portray the already "death for sure because they are pitbulls" picture that I see here.

This statement right their needs to be addressed. "Proper training makes the difference between having a good dog and a bad dog." It puts the blame on the dog owner, RIGHTFULLY SO!

People who arent educated dog owners should definately not own a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, commonly known as a pitbull.

However, my thoughts go out to the family for their loss.

How terrible. If the dog has spent 90% of its time in a pen outdoors, why in the world would you bring it inside your home while a baby is laying on a bed, within the dogs reach? I'm sure noone thought this would happen, but how well do you really know a dog who lives outside in a pen 90% of the time?

This story struck a nerve with me. No one in their right mind should ever leave an animal unattended around children. No matter how friendly a dog is, because you never know what might set them off. That poor child had to suffer a very preventable death.. Yes, the dog did something awful, but in reality it wasn't her fault.. She was used to living outside in a pen, obviously didn't get the proper training or socialization, she should never have been around that child in the first place.

I don't think its as much 'setting off' the dog as it is the dog not understanding what the baby is. Many dogs also get jealous of a new baby because they don't understand why it is being kept from them and why its getting the dog's attention all of a sudden.

The trainer is exactly right. This dog obviously was not properly trained or socialized. Why would someone have dogs just to keep them out in the yard or in a kennel all the time anyways. I mean, don't get me wrong, it is horrible that this happened to a poor defensless child, but these dogs were not properly socialized or trained.
