Pet Dog Mauls Sleeping Infant

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- A pet dog that killed a two-month old boy in Hawaii has been euthanized, marking the close to the first fatal dog attack case in O'ahu in recent years.

The baby, Iopeka Liptak, died from head injuries within minutes of the attack on Saturday night.

The baby's 31-year-old mother and another relative present at the home were also treated for dog bites.

The family dog, described as a medium-sized, mixed-breed female, apparently attacked the infant without provocation.

"We have no information on this dog," Humane Society spokeswoman Kawehi Yim told The Honolulu Advertiser. "No microchip, no tag, nothing. There's no identification on this animal."

The dog, Penelope Rose, belonged to the baby's great-aunt, Opal Sao.

Sao says she left the baby sleeping on her bed when she went to her kitchen for a drink of water on Saturday night. The dog was initially by Sao's side, and when she realized the dog had left the room she ran to the bedroom.

Sao found the dog leaning over the mauled baby, which she then picked up and handed to her niece.

"The dog went wild," Sao told The Honolulu Advertiser. "Penny grabbed my niece's leg. She was attacking her. I attacked the dog to get her off. Penny's behavior was something I'd never seen before. I didn't recognize her."

The dog was placed into isolation early Sunday morning and was then euthanized Monday afternoon at Sao's request.

The dog, which had never attacked anyone, lived mainly outside in a kennel with Sao's other dogs.

"The dog was in the kennel 90 percent of the time, except for the past month, and then he was in the yard," neighbor Bob Vidinha reportedly said.

One dog trainer of O'ahu, Dave Pang, says basic training and socialization might have prevented this attack.

"Proper training makes the difference between having a good dog and a bad dog," he said. "That's the only way they know how to respond [if not trained] by attacking."

This is the first time O'ahu, the third largest of the Hawaiian islands, has seen a fatal dog attack, police officials say.

Tragedy also struck in Kaufman County, Texas, last week, when three dogs attacked an eight-year-old girl and her 54-year-old grandmother.

The grandmother saw the dogs -- two pit bulls and a mixed-breed dog -- maul the girl and tried to intervene, only suffering injuries herself.

The girl had to be airlifted to the nearest hospital but but she and her grandmother are expected to make a full recovery.

I have a hard time believing that this dog had aggressive tendencies prior to the incident. A dog does not do things for no reason!

Dogs are social animals, like humans are. To isolate a dog, either from other dogd or family, creates an unstable unsocialized dog.

It is a sad story for all involved.

While we cannot speculate on what happened, training is helpful, but not the answer. Temperament and early socializaton come to mind. Pet owners should be aware that there are experts out there that can help you evaluate whether your dog will be good for children or not. Do not take the risk. My heart goes out to this family.

This is such as sad story. My heart goes out to the family but I would have never let a dog around a infant, that spent 90% of its time in a kennel.

Dogs that are always on a chain or confined have shown to be aggresive ...I would have never enclosed my dog for one but if I had I would have never let my baby alone . My prayers are with the family .

It is rare to read of an attack and killing like this, although I imagine it happens. However, in this case, the dog attacking was so vicious...or was it?

This poor dog was probably very stressed from confinement in a kennel with other dogs and the lack of human caring. He probably thought the baby was prey. Yes, as horrible as that sounds. And attacking his owner...maybe to protect his "kill."

Then again, the dog could have had rabies?? Neurological damage?

Then again...the dog could have been an abused dog...like regularly beaten.

People like this, who mainly keep dogs in a kennel...why do they have them?

It is VERY common in Hawaii to "outside" dogs, that can hardly be considered pets let alone family members....A very sad situation for most dogs. And even though this article claims it is the first death by dog attack on Oahu in recent years, I would wager that the number of dog bites is high in Hawaii, because of the lack of training and socialization many dogs suffer. Of course there are incredible dog owners in Hawaii(don't get all defensive on me), just something I have noticed.

Horrible story, I need to start with why have the dog if you leave it outside 90% of the time. I agree with all of you that stated if a dog is locked in a kennel most of the time it should never be aloud around an infant. Sad story.

Snip: "'The dog was in the kennel 90 percent of the time, except for the past month, and then he was in the yard,' neighbor Bob Vidinha reportedly said."

Let me get this straight, the dog is outside most of the time but then is brought into the house when a baby is around. Yeah, that seems like a really bright idea.

And then, when the dog steps away for a minute, the person freaks and goes to look for the kid. The dog was the instrument of the baby's death but the person seems just as guilty.

Oh my god that's awful. There must have been something. Even a rambunctious pet dog wouldn't attack a quiet, sleeping, person, no matter how small. There must have been something going on or some kind of mental snap in the dog. Geez that's so sad.

Dogs don't just maul people, let alone babies. There was definately something fishy going on in this house. This is a classic case of animal abuse and irresponsible pet owning.

Something else was going on here... I would never panic and run to check my child if my dog was not at my side... obviously they knew there was potential danger in bringing this dog in the house with the baby, so SHAME ON THEM for being so thoughtless and stupid.

I agree. A dog that is caged up outside 90% of the time is not exactly a family pet. And it also struck me weird that when the dog was not at her side, she ran into the babys room.. why? If she had no reason to believe the dog could not be trusted, why did she run in there when the dog left her side? IDIOTS!

If The Dog Spent 90% Of Its Life In A Cage...Why Bother Having It? Its Abuse And Cruelty, If The Dog Had No Socialization, No Training, And Was Left In Isolation To Go Insane. This shows what happens when a dog is left outside....kenneled and not properly socialized, definitely not the dogs fault here....clearly a poor dog owner. No dog should be left alone 90% on the time, why even own a dog if you never see it?

ok, did I miss something....the dog was kenneled ,,,then let outdoors,,or in the yard....hmmmmm did they do blood work to see if possibly the dog could have rabbies?? what about the other dogs?? are they showing any signs of aggressiveness, and if they are, are they neglected, if so the other dogs, need to be taken away from this lady!!! and she too should be held responsible, for this tragic situation....

This situation is just wrong in so many different ways. The aunt is as much to blame if not more so than the dog, you don't leave what is basically a "wild" dog around a baby, the dog could sense that he was the one in control in that situation.

Dogs kept 90% of the time in isolation are bound to have behavior issues. Why, why, why does this happen. Why have a dog if all you do it throw it out in a kennel. This was an accident waiting to happen. My condolences to the family.

Something like that is always a tragedy to hear about...but like some of the other comments that i've read on hear I would have to agree with. There's no reason that a dog should be in a kennel for 90% of the time that someone owns them! It's no different then not even paying attention to them and letting them just socialize with the other dogs and become wild...I give my regards, no one should ever lose their baby to something so horrible as that.

I don't believe that it has anything to do with animal instincts. I have a properly socialized, correct temperment Pit Bull and I know without a doubt she would never attack a human unless she was provoked and I mean attacked. Even then I'm not sure she would attack a human.

The animal behaviorist mentioned in the news article is right on the money. I've seen similar information from other experts. It has a lot to do with socialization, unless of course the dog had some type of innate temperment problem. In aresponse to a different attack the expert said the signs of a dog attack are always there and these dogs are ticking time bombs. The fact is that the owners are unaware of the signs.

No dog should be chained or kenneled all day. If that's their idea of keeping a pet they shouldn't have one.

I guess this dog wasn't a Pit. If it was it would have been front page news.

I believe it is all in how you train and raise them but above all else you must remember no matter how loving and wonderful they are, they are all animals. They will all have animal instincts outside of what we have taught them.

This is a very sad story. However I dont think any animal should be trusted alone with a baby or small child, no matter how friendly they are, let alone a dog that had spent most of it's life outside in a kennel.

Incredibly sad and extremely scary. I'll be interested to hear if further analysis provides more information on this dog and why it could have happened. Meanwhile, assuming it was a friendly happy dog, it is shocking.

So very sad, but so preventable. You can't expect a dog who spends "90% of its time" in a kennel to automatically be the perfect trustworthy house pet around an infant. I feel so sorry for this family's loss, but ignorance is no excuse. Even with a well-socialized dog you need to be overly cautious.

There was just a similar situation here in Arizona recently as well. In this case, the toddler was left to play with the family's five rottweilers alone outside. Luckily, the toddler survived, but is in critical condition. I just don't get it.

I agree with Marleydog...some people shouldn't have pets. I hear these stories and I know as a long time dog owner that my dogs would never behave this way. The articles always seem to indicate that the owner has no responsibility - I just don't buy what they are selling!

Proof that keeping a pet as a "yard ornament" (or in this case a "kennel ornament") and then expecting it to behave as a well-socialized and cuddly family member doesn't work. If you plan to have a pet, treat the animal as a pet (family member), if you want an ornament, buy a pink flamingo or some topiary!

Oh, I soooooo agree with you on this.....I just hate it when I see dogs penned up in small little kennels...and not usually getting much human contact or socializing at all.....My neighbors got a small beagle, and he is either put on a cable outside, or locked in his crate inside....and seldom gets the owners to play or socialize with him.....I try to take him for walks with my girls, but because he's not socialized more, he tends to ram them or get really aggressive towards my girls, and ends up hurting them....so i've had to stop taking him for now....I've tried to explain how important it is to socialize their dog...but it seems to go in one ear & out the other.....I feel sorry for the dog, as it's not his fault, it's his owners!!!
