Pet Dog Mauls Sleeping Infant

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- A pet dog that killed a two-month old boy in Hawaii has been euthanized, marking the close to the first fatal dog attack case in O'ahu in recent years.

The baby, Iopeka Liptak, died from head injuries within minutes of the attack on Saturday night.

The baby's 31-year-old mother and another relative present at the home were also treated for dog bites.

The family dog, described as a medium-sized, mixed-breed female, apparently attacked the infant without provocation.

"We have no information on this dog," Humane Society spokeswoman Kawehi Yim told The Honolulu Advertiser. "No microchip, no tag, nothing. There's no identification on this animal."

The dog, Penelope Rose, belonged to the baby's great-aunt, Opal Sao.

Sao says she left the baby sleeping on her bed when she went to her kitchen for a drink of water on Saturday night. The dog was initially by Sao's side, and when she realized the dog had left the room she ran to the bedroom.

Sao found the dog leaning over the mauled baby, which she then picked up and handed to her niece.

"The dog went wild," Sao told The Honolulu Advertiser. "Penny grabbed my niece's leg. She was attacking her. I attacked the dog to get her off. Penny's behavior was something I'd never seen before. I didn't recognize her."

The dog was placed into isolation early Sunday morning and was then euthanized Monday afternoon at Sao's request.

The dog, which had never attacked anyone, lived mainly outside in a kennel with Sao's other dogs.

"The dog was in the kennel 90 percent of the time, except for the past month, and then he was in the yard," neighbor Bob Vidinha reportedly said.

One dog trainer of O'ahu, Dave Pang, says basic training and socialization might have prevented this attack.

"Proper training makes the difference between having a good dog and a bad dog," he said. "That's the only way they know how to respond [if not trained] by attacking."

This is the first time O'ahu, the third largest of the Hawaiian islands, has seen a fatal dog attack, police officials say.

Tragedy also struck in Kaufman County, Texas, last week, when three dogs attacked an eight-year-old girl and her 54-year-old grandmother.

The grandmother saw the dogs -- two pit bulls and a mixed-breed dog -- maul the girl and tried to intervene, only suffering injuries herself.

The girl had to be airlifted to the nearest hospital but but she and her grandmother are expected to make a full recovery.

My prayers goes out to this family. So much more needs to be taught to dog owners then we are getting now. Common sence for one says never leave a baby unattended with a dog of any kind in the house. The same thing happened in a town close to where I live last year and that child also died.

How sad--example why you never leave infants unattended with dogs--especially dogs that are not accustomed to being indoors and around children.

Sad story. I believe that kids should never be left alone with dogs. I don't care how well you know your dog, it only takes seconds for a dog to kill a child.

I believe it is never the dogs fault .. it all depends on the owner and the dogs training .. I agree with Jeff, if this dog was an outside dog and was in a kennel 90% of the time then why on earth was the dog in the house with that baby?

There are either no words or too many words for a reply. WHY why WHY? Dog put to sleep at owner's request? How about she's investigated at my request!

The dog was left in a kennel with other dogs 90 percent of the time?????? Was the dog ever socialized to a baby or children?? Tragic event. I tell parents all the time..... your dog has to be WITH your children under strict supervision so that you can teach BOTH proper interaction skills. <sigh>

This is disgusting and there is better checking for dog ownership at shelters than NONE for making a good parent who has any sense!

What the heck was wrong with this family? Let's leave a dog that is not too used to humans alone in a room with a baby on a bed. That dog is not a bad dog. Those people are stupid owners who should not have a dog in the first place. It is a miracle that this dog hasn't had more problems, although it is hard to attack when you spend 90 percent of the day in a kennel, and the rest in a back yard.

Gee, how many things are wrong in this story? We have an undersocialized, untrained, primarily outside dog who is left alone with a very small infant. Under the circumstances, I'd say that it's more surprising that the dog hadn't injured someone previously!

Why would they bring an outside dog into the house when they had a new baby? Common sense would indicate that would be a lot of stress for the dog to handle. Of course, hind-sight....

Heart breaking. Sao should NEVER have had the dog in the house with the baby there. Especially since it seems the dog didn't spend much time there in the first place.

I couldn't imagine having that happen to my child. If that dog was in the kennel more than half the time, wouldn't you be leary about letting it be next to your baby. That dog im sure thought that, that baby was just a toy. The mother should have moved th edog or baby out of the room until she got back.

This is such a bad thing to hear you must socialize your pets and leaving them in a kennel for 90% of the tiem is animal abuse in itsself. Poor poor baby this is a very sad situation. My heart goes out to the mother of the baby.

You don't ever leave an animal with an infant! even if you trust the dog 100% it could've easily knocked the baby off the bed causing injury...there is just too much room for error.

What a horrible tragedy. I don't understand the point of keeping an animal if it is going to spend 90% of its time in a kennel. Why bother having it then? It's not fair to the animal to be kept in a kennel with no socialization or enrichment activities. What a terrible shame.

What idiots! They should be charged with manslaughter. Keeping an un-socialized dog around an infant is a completely brainless move!!!

The dog was a 'kennel' dog why was it in the house with a little baby in the first place. Why did the family have 'kennel' dogs anyways? Dogs are meant to be treated like a part of the family not locked away in a kennel all its life.

An unsocialized dog, left in a kennel 90% of the time? duh. Also, she knew the dog wasn't trustworthy as the article said when she realized the dog wasn't by her side she ran to the bedroom. Why run? An innocent baby and dog had to die because of human ignorance.

This is a direct reflect of poor socialization. The only thing the dog knew was the owner and when placed in a case for the majority of your life and then left alone with someone other than the owner. This was a tragic mistake waiting to happen.

As a soon to be grandma with our daughter living here also we will never allow our 6 dogs to be alone with our grand daughter.Very sad for this family to have to go through this.
