Pet Ban Faces Opposition From Store Owners

AUSTRALIA – A proposed ban that would eliminate the sale of mammals in Australian pet stores faces opposition from store owners who say the problem isn't their fault.

We reported on the proposal a few weeks ago – when the legislation was first introduced by parliamentary minister Clover Moore. Since then, store owners have banned together under the wing of the Pet Industry Association.

The group has presented a petition containing over 10,000 signatures to the parliament, in hopes of stalling the move.

Reps say there's no evidence the shops are at fault for impulse buying. But proponents of the ban say stores displaying cute puppies do just that – compel people who aren't ready for the responsibility to buy a new pet.

They also argue that many stores get their supply from puppy mills – which are notorious for using unscrupulous breeding methods.

But opponents argue that a new code of practice is a better solution, since the new ban could force many shops to close.

What do you think of this ban?

I hope this ban through, and I only wish it would happen here in the US. There are to many animals in shelters for animals to be sold in pet stores. And if I had a nickle every time I said Adopt dont shop......

I agree with this totally. Go to the shelter and rescue. Why breed when you can rescue.

I so agree with this ban-there are so many loving animals in the shelters that need good, loving homes.

If the pet stores feel that they really need to have pets to propogate the sale of the items in their store, then let them partner with the local shelter to supply the pets. It would give more face time for the animals and stop the puppy mills.

This makes so much sense. Why keep making puppies when you already have such loveable creatures who need loving homes.

If this puts some stores out of business then their focus is on the selling of puppy mill pets rather than the items for their care.

If Australia is the same as the US and have adequate shelters to find pets, I agree with the ban.

I agree with the ban. With so many animals in shelters, I don't think they should be sold in stores. And I think this is why there still are so many puppy mills.

I don't think impulse buying is nearly as big a deal as some think. People usually have been thinking about a pet. The problem though is that these pups are usually from puppy mills and that needs to be stopped.

it does make sense to ban them from stores because people do impulsively buy pets and then realize they dont want them and then humane societies gets the dogs after

I am all for the ban and wish it could be put into place in this country. It would end animal mills and reduce the number of stray and unwanted animals.

I think its the right move. Would like to see the U.S.A. propose such an idea & have it passed. If pet stores didn't sell puppies and kittens then their would be little need for puppy mills or for these people who don't spay their cats. They'd have nowhere to go to sell the litters. Pet stores don't need to be selling cats and dogs. Pet stores who allow shelters/rescue groups to come in & place some pets there who are up for adoption I think is a terrific idea. Gives them much needed exposure.

Pet stores need to sell pet products not pets. Animal breederes and stores that sell cats and dogs are just after the allmighty dollar and donot care about the animals at all. This is great - and hopefully more countries will follow suit. Animals need all the help they can get. And don't buy - adopt!! There are millions of poor animals in desperate need of homes.

It's a tough decision, but it may well be best to leave the breed selling to the breeders. Let the pet stores be an option for shelters to display animals, and only with trained representatives who will ensure that potential owners are well aware of the responsibilites involved, with a couple of days' holding period so that decisions are not rash/impulse.

I think the ban sounds like a good idea. The stores are upset because they will shut down or lose money. They should make their money selling pet supplies

I think that pet stores everywhere need to be monitored closer for what they are selling. No puppy should be sold from puppy mills and I dont think that pet stores should sell exotic animals either !

I agree that a new code of practice may be better. Those pet stores that are legitimately selling mammals may be punished through no fault of their own. I think if the pet stores have tougher regulations and more strict adoption process. The authorities can then go after the pet stores who are being supplied by pupppy mills.

Pet stores are a link in the chain for puppymills. Though they don't do anything directly, they do, indirectly.

Pet stores should only sell pet supplies, leave the animal adoption up to the shelters. These places are so greedy to make money selling these pups. People need to stop buying from the pet stores.

I absolutely agree with your comment Paula!! Imagine how many more animals would be rescued out of shelter at a lower price than the greedy pet stores sell them and in many cases the animals are in way better health! I think pet stores should stick to selling supplies and let shelters be the only place a person can get a pet through rigorous adoption approving process and for the breeder excuse there are millions of full blooded pure breed animals in our shelters every day. So save a life and adopt a shelter pet! Lets end the horrible puppy mills for good!!
