PETA Uncovers Atrocities by Petsmart Vendor

Browse News

HAMILTON, Tx. - An undercover investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals revealed that a Petsmart vendor routinely abuses the animals it raises.

A PETA investigator gained access to the Rainbow World Exotics facility in Hamilton, Texas, which breeds birds and other small animals that are sold in Petsmart stores. Over the course of two months, the investigator documented, filmed and photographed the way animals are treated.

Petsmart does not sell dogs and cats.

PETA is asking customers to boycott Petsmart pending a full investigation by the Department of Agriculture. The animal rights group has filed paperwork in hopes of obtaining such an investigation.

The investigator witnessed a rabbit getting neutered. As can be seen in the video, the animal wasn't properly anesthitized and the blade used was reportedly dull. To clean the animal, Clorox lemon scented wipes were used.

Dead animals were routinely found throughout the facility. Animals eating other animals, cramped cages, and lack of medical care were also common.

Petsmart contends the vendor has passed all previous inspections, and will stand by the company. Information found on the Petsmart Web site stated the company is taking the situation seriously and will fully investigate PETA's allegations.

Petsmart says it requires all its vendors to follow USDA regulations concerning animal care, including having a licensed veterinary professional on site.

Petsmart made headlines last month when it pulled all its birds from 785 U.S. locations because of an outbreak of psittacosis – also known as parrot fever.

To learn more about PETA's investigation, go to petsmartcruelty.com. There is graphic imagery. For Petsmart's response, go to petsmart.com and click “Press Room,” then “The Facts.”

Good point. Adoptable animals from shelters benefit from the huge amount of traffic that goes through a Petsmart store any given day. That is a wonderful practice. That doesn't mean that they can't do BETTER in other areas.

PETA finds this kind of stuff because they look for it with the intent of finding it. A self fullfilling prophecy. More information from more reliable sources is needed before judgement should be passed. Boycotting them affets many of the other terrific programs they have that help homeless animals. We need more information.

I am curious. Can you tell me *which* area PetSmart sells Bunnies? I know for a fact that the Pa. stores don't..... Come on, it's PETA. They lie and exaggerate all the time. I have personally witnessed Petas lies and allegations first hand while being an employee at PetSmart, they *sneak* into stores, try to release animals from their cages, and free the birds. Is that in the best interest of the animals? No, what if they get caught up on something, fly out of the store...the weather alone can kill them. Don't believe evrything you hear from Peta.

Here you go, right from PetSmart's web site, a press release: "PetSmart began in-market research in July 2007 of spayed and neutered dwarf rabbits in about 25 stores nationwide to evaluate potential sales as part of our small pet offering. We consider the test successful because of what we learned from it. However, we failed to meet the business objectives we set, so, at this time, we’re not expanding the test and will not continue to sell dwarf bunnies beyond those already in or planned for our stores."

Although many of us have mixed opinions about PETA, it's hard to deny all the huge strides they have made for animals in the last couple decades. I'm not always a huge fan of the tactics they use, but they do draw attention to issues that need to be discussed.

Like it or not, the squeaky wheel does get the grease... When being "nice and polite" doesn't work (and many times it doesn't with large corporations), then you have no choice but to be VERY LOUD about your concerns.

I don't understand why people are so ready to believe these. I'm not saying I wouldn't but they really don't prove anything in this article. If Petsmart is really doing this than it is more disgusting than imaginable. However, PETA has been known to stretch the truth.

PETA likes to lie and exaggerate. Until a real investigation is made anything they claim is exactly that a claim not necessarily true.

Having taken an Animal Ethics course and being exposed to the scandals that PETA has admitted to doing, I don't believe their allegations. Not to mention they support an FBI documented terrorist group.

Actually that's a "really large mention." Considering that the FBI investigated people for speaking out against the war (before it was "popular" to do so) and labeling a book club of about 8 people "terrorists," I'd take that with a large grain of salt.

This is a complete lie!!! I once saw some big mice biting the fur off another one and making it bleed. I told someone and they rushed right over to keep it safe. I checked back and it wasn't put back into (a differant) cage until it was completely healed.

Come close so i can whisper this to u -

NEVER BUY ANIMALS FROM A STORE!!!!
there are plenty of needy animals at shelters....stores who make money off of animals rarely have the animals best interest in mind it's all about the $$$

Why is this Petsmart fault, yes they buy animal from pet vendors, but why is it Petsmart responsibility to control their operations. Do we know how animals are treated that are going to the slaughter houses, prior to it arriving in our supermarkets. Does the FDA hold the grocery stores responsible? NO they go after the source.

I don't know why a pet store whould do such a thing. But then again I have visited many pet stores where I've seen sick and malnourished puppies in tiny cages. I shouldn't be surprised.

It was not the store at all it was possibly a vendor. However, consider the source. The source is PETA. PETA is well know to exaggerate and lie to get their point across even if they are completely wrong.

Yipes! I work as a volunteer for cat adoptions at a Petsmart. I think boycotts are good, but there are plenty of wonderful people who work at these stores. They become victoms of a few as do the animals that they try to help by supplying a place to adopt.

Hopefully Petsmart will change their inspection standards and procedures.

If this type of behaviors are or were going on it should be handled. Those mis treating animals should be charged.

What a suprise... Any company that breeds animals for business - I can almost guarantee - do not treat their animals well. The all mighty dollar rules in this regard. The animals may be treated OK - because they will be sold for money - but they don't care about them. People that really care about animals and their welfare have shelters and rescue groups - not breeding facilities.

Actually video can lie if you know how to edit things. You can edit video to make it look however you want, as long as you know what you are doing. It's actually pretty easy if you know what you are doing.

What a horrible story. It sickens me that there are people out there that actually abuse animals. It literally makes me sick to my stomach. I hope this vendor is put in jail for life and I hope petsmart does a better job of investigating its vendors in the future.

I agree. The government certainly isn't going to investigate anything--they can barely keep out food and water supply safe! And they've proven they can't ensure the safety of pet food or toys (laced with lead). Like their tactics or not, we need PETA.
