PETA Uncovers Atrocities by Petsmart Vendor

Browse News

HAMILTON, Tx. - An undercover investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals revealed that a Petsmart vendor routinely abuses the animals it raises.

A PETA investigator gained access to the Rainbow World Exotics facility in Hamilton, Texas, which breeds birds and other small animals that are sold in Petsmart stores. Over the course of two months, the investigator documented, filmed and photographed the way animals are treated.

Petsmart does not sell dogs and cats.

PETA is asking customers to boycott Petsmart pending a full investigation by the Department of Agriculture. The animal rights group has filed paperwork in hopes of obtaining such an investigation.

The investigator witnessed a rabbit getting neutered. As can be seen in the video, the animal wasn't properly anesthitized and the blade used was reportedly dull. To clean the animal, Clorox lemon scented wipes were used.

Dead animals were routinely found throughout the facility. Animals eating other animals, cramped cages, and lack of medical care were also common.

Petsmart contends the vendor has passed all previous inspections, and will stand by the company. Information found on the Petsmart Web site stated the company is taking the situation seriously and will fully investigate PETA's allegations.

Petsmart says it requires all its vendors to follow USDA regulations concerning animal care, including having a licensed veterinary professional on site.

Petsmart made headlines last month when it pulled all its birds from 785 U.S. locations because of an outbreak of psittacosis – also known as parrot fever.

To learn more about PETA's investigation, go to petsmartcruelty.com. There is graphic imagery. For Petsmart's response, go to petsmart.com and click “Press Room,” then “The Facts.”

Petsmart just needs to quit selling animals - no place should sell animals. We just cannot patronize any of the stores that do it. We need to support places that help the humane societies find good homes by showing their animals and working with the humane societies.

Very cruel incident ~ but was it isolated? That would be quite a coincidence, that the cruelty happened in front of a camera, but that usually humane practices are followed. I doubt it.

This is awful. I do hope this is an isolated incident. And I do hope a COMPLETE investigation is done.

I've actually never witnessed this in the Petsmart stores that I've visited. I hope this is an isolated incident. The individuals involved should be fired and Petsmart should adopt more humane policies AND enforce them with all of their employees.

To the people of PetSmart and Rainbow World Exotics: what if that were your pet on the table being cut open with inadequate painkiller and wiped with caustic bleach? Absolutely disgusting.

O.k. That is sad but stopping the sale of animals does squat for anyone or anything. Their should be more common sense used yes. Non social and canablaistic pets should have their own cages (i.e. syriain hamsters) but what exactly do you think a breeding facility looks like? They will sell them with or without the good intentions and well regulated atmosphere of Petco. No I will NOT stop shopping there.

I hope that Petsmart will investigate these charges for themselves and take appropriate action even if it means not selling these small animals from Rainbow Pet Exotics.

I can't believe they would house animals that way. People who work at pet stores are supposed to care for their pets, not kill them. I think that that pet store should be locked up, shut down, and never opened up again.

Petsmart is not responsible for the actions of the vendor. Should they investigate the allegations, of course. And they should cut all ties with the vendor. But government agencies have the job of regulating and inspecting breeding facilities.

Yes PETA can sometimes go a little overboard but it is them that people pay attention. And even if they may blow something out of proportion - ad some people say - it is only then it makes the news. So PETA does good work.

If PetSmart and other types of pet stores would simply stop selling animals, they wouldn't have to worry about such problems. There is no reason for this chain to sell live animals of any kind.

I agree. I would like to see them stop selling animals. Petsmart doesn't sell cats or dogs and I applaud them for allowing shelters room in their stores to help in the adoption of unwanted animals. Having seen the conditions of the bird cages and the birds themselves, I wish they would stop the practice of selling birds.

I am concerned about the comment that says "Petsmart contends the vendor has passed all previous inspections, and will stand by the company." I would hope that in light of this information, Petsmart would at least reconsider their association with this vendor.
