PETA Uncovers Atrocities by Petsmart Vendor

Browse News

HAMILTON, Tx. - An undercover investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals revealed that a Petsmart vendor routinely abuses the animals it raises.

A PETA investigator gained access to the Rainbow World Exotics facility in Hamilton, Texas, which breeds birds and other small animals that are sold in Petsmart stores. Over the course of two months, the investigator documented, filmed and photographed the way animals are treated.

Petsmart does not sell dogs and cats.

PETA is asking customers to boycott Petsmart pending a full investigation by the Department of Agriculture. The animal rights group has filed paperwork in hopes of obtaining such an investigation.

The investigator witnessed a rabbit getting neutered. As can be seen in the video, the animal wasn't properly anesthitized and the blade used was reportedly dull. To clean the animal, Clorox lemon scented wipes were used.

Dead animals were routinely found throughout the facility. Animals eating other animals, cramped cages, and lack of medical care were also common.

Petsmart contends the vendor has passed all previous inspections, and will stand by the company. Information found on the Petsmart Web site stated the company is taking the situation seriously and will fully investigate PETA's allegations.

Petsmart says it requires all its vendors to follow USDA regulations concerning animal care, including having a licensed veterinary professional on site.

Petsmart made headlines last month when it pulled all its birds from 785 U.S. locations because of an outbreak of psittacosis – also known as parrot fever.

To learn more about PETA's investigation, go to petsmartcruelty.com. There is graphic imagery. For Petsmart's response, go to petsmart.com and click “Press Room,” then “The Facts.”

I think a retail chain as large as petsmart would be more interested in how these animals are being treated. I also think that animals sold as pets should be sold on a smaller scale where they are getting the attention from humans they need to become well socialized.

No matter how much truth there is in this story, the one truth it shows is that it's always best to rescue/adopt pets than to buy from a store.

one other possiblity...how do we know that those are Rainbow World Exotics employees in this video and not PETA members staging this video? it is just another way of altering video the old fashioned way...by actual acting instead of editing

You know, I actually did not think about that. But that is a very good possibility that they staged the entire thing and did so with their own people and the animals in their own care. I would not put it passed them to stage the entire thing either.

Is a sad reality... and not only PetsMart should be punished but also the people who do this. You do not need very much common sense to know what it need to be done and take action. I have seen it happen... employees walk by a empty water bowl... looks at it and keeps on going... makes you wonder how many times a day this ocurs and with how many more animals. Low pay, lack of education and lack of love for animals it what makes thing like this happen.

Who is in charge of regularly inspecting these facilities. I highly doubt that Petsmart is the ones in charge of that. I would suggest looking into who has that authority and why they let these things go. To my knowledge, that would be a state or federal agency. While I think Petsmart should only deal with reputable dealers, I also think they rely on the investigations done by these agencies. So, I would question whether the investigations were done and the results before passing judgement on Petsmart. Were there dumented complaints during the government investigations?

Unfortunately as long as stores sell animals and people are still buying them it will continue. We need to educate people NOT to buy their companion animals as long as millions are being killed due to lack of homes, abuse and neglect.

Petsmart is NOT the ones doing this it is one of their vendors. And that is only if you believe PETA. Which I do not. I don't believe a single thing that comes out of any PETA's member's mouth. Also how come so many of you do NOT realize how easy it is to edit video to make it say anything you want it to say. I would not be surprised whatsoever if this allegation is entirely false. PETA has an agenda to eliminate ALL companion animals from the face of the earth. They do not think anyone should have a pet cat, dog, bird, fish, hamster, ect. They are well known for lying and exaggerating facts. You can so easily make video say and show anything you want it to say. It would not shock me at all that this entire "investigation" is a lie.

Anything that PETA discovers is sometimes hard to take for hard facts, they do have a tendency to get "tabloid fever." If Pet Smart investigates and finds these allegations to be remotely true, I am pretty sure they will stop using that vendor. PETA had great intentions when they started, but the problem is they come across as being nuts, and difficult to believe. Which is sad considering what their intent should be.

Something doesn't sound right here. Based on my experience with local PetSmart stores there is no way they would knowingly work with a pet breeder like this. By the same token I have seen PETA go over the top to sensationalize a story. I do not say things like this do not (and should not) happen. Rather than coming down on PetSmart for one supplier in one(?) location you need to go after the breeder. The breeder is the one who is in violation of the law. I suspect PetSmart has already drop the breeder if the breeder is even half guilty. They just do not need the bad publicity.

Wow, you really hate PETA. They have done some very questionable things for sure, but they have done some very good things as well (helping to take over Primarily primates, trying to get great apes out of entertainment etc.). They have the money and the power to get things done. You definitely have to take some things they do with a grain of salt, but I am inclined to believe this one. Corporations like PetSmart cut corners to save money and the animals are the ones who suffer. I would be surprised if there animals were well cared for, this is why I will never buy a small animal from them.

I am sorry, but I do not believe that Petsmart, the very same store that has donated to so many shelters and has shelter animals in their stores, would knowingly work with a vendor that treats animals this way. Peta on the other hand, has done far worse things, like killing animals themselves , that makes them a waste of an organization that claims to love and help animals. Peta tries to take on a holier then thou attitude while crossing their fingers behind their backs. They are just as good as brainwashing as those scientology idiots are and I dont trust anything they have to say

Exactly! There are too many on here in complete support of PETA blaming PetsMart for this. A long time ago I was kind of supportive of PETA UNTIL I found out about all the lies they'd told and how many animals they'd actually killed. Now I despise them. People need to do their research before placing all the blame on one particular person/group. Rainbow World Exotics is to blame from what you read and see in the video but who's to say that PETA didn't falsify the video? We're not even sure where that video was actually filmed and whether PETA didn't snatch it from somewhere else and claim it as their own footage.

I think the best way to handle abuses like this if for companies like Petsmart to refuse to buy pets that are raised in such horrible conditions. If the breeders couldn't sell the animals, they would either get out of the business or clean up their act.

PetsMart is an excellent supporter of shelters throughtout the US. I am sure they hate that this happened and that they will do everything to get this cleared up. Pets are their business and I am sure things will get better at this store and now that the vendor has been caught, things should straighten up there or be shut down. The vendor I mean.

after reading the many posts both pro and con, we need to take a step back for a moment to consider the motivations of PETA. we already know that they are campaigning against PetSmart and that means they will use any and all means to make PetSmart look bad. PetSmart should and is looking into these allegations about one of their vendors because they need to protect themselves from the bad publicity if these allegations happen to prove true. i am sure if there is any merit to the allegations PetSmart will do the right thing. but what should be the penalty on PETA if these allegations are proven false? could and/or should PetSmart take PETA to court and sue them for libel? many groups get away with damaging companies reputations by spreading lies and almost nothing is done about it.

Personally I hope when these allegations are proven to be false Petsmart does sue PETA for libel. I would also hope they get a huge settlement from PETA which would force people to think twice about supporting PETA. Although that probably won't happen since PETA attempts to brainwash people. It really is amazing the numbers of people who have been brainwashed by PETA.

Yes, I finally am reading some comments that make sense.

PetSmart has always been good to our shelter. They work hard to help shelters/rescues with adopt a thon, giving money for every animal that rescue/shelter adoptes out in their store. They give out grants.

PETA does not have a clean slate by far and I only take what they say with a grain of salt. I would stand behind PetSmart as I am sure they will investigate and will make thing right if they are bad.

Pet smart needs to take a harder look at its animal supplier. A tough audit program of its animal supply chain, with a pledge to only acquire animals only by suppliers who follow strict protocols that prevent scenes like in this video are a must, and they should be boycotted until such time as they adopt such a policy. Obviously, what they have in place isn't working

It would not shock me at all that PETA is lying about part if not all of this. You can make a video show anything you want it to by the way you edit the video. I have not watched the video and have no intention of doing so. I do happen to have a degree in broadcasting and know how to edit video. If you have the right equipment you can edit tons of video from different days, months, years together to make a video to show exactly what you want it to show. I have no doubt this is exactly what PETA did in trying to make some point that is most likely wrong. Also who is to say anyone was actually using clorox or bleach on a towel to clean off an animal. That could so easily be edited to make you think that is what is going on. You can edit video of someone pouring clorox/bleach onto a towel with video of them using a different towel to actually clean the animal. Who is to say the clorox/bleach towel was not being using to clean an empty cage or counter? No one can say this is what was actually done. The only person is the person who video taped it, however, since that person is from PETA I would not believe the person to begin with. I would want to see all the tape completely unedited. However, I highly doubt that is possible as I would not be surprised if the original tape that was edited has been destroyed.
