PETA Uncovers Atrocities by Petsmart Vendor

Browse News

HAMILTON, Tx. - An undercover investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals revealed that a Petsmart vendor routinely abuses the animals it raises.

A PETA investigator gained access to the Rainbow World Exotics facility in Hamilton, Texas, which breeds birds and other small animals that are sold in Petsmart stores. Over the course of two months, the investigator documented, filmed and photographed the way animals are treated.

Petsmart does not sell dogs and cats.

PETA is asking customers to boycott Petsmart pending a full investigation by the Department of Agriculture. The animal rights group has filed paperwork in hopes of obtaining such an investigation.

The investigator witnessed a rabbit getting neutered. As can be seen in the video, the animal wasn't properly anesthitized and the blade used was reportedly dull. To clean the animal, Clorox lemon scented wipes were used.

Dead animals were routinely found throughout the facility. Animals eating other animals, cramped cages, and lack of medical care were also common.

Petsmart contends the vendor has passed all previous inspections, and will stand by the company. Information found on the Petsmart Web site stated the company is taking the situation seriously and will fully investigate PETA's allegations.

Petsmart says it requires all its vendors to follow USDA regulations concerning animal care, including having a licensed veterinary professional on site.

Petsmart made headlines last month when it pulled all its birds from 785 U.S. locations because of an outbreak of psittacosis – also known as parrot fever.

To learn more about PETA's investigation, go to petsmartcruelty.com. There is graphic imagery. For Petsmart's response, go to petsmart.com and click “Press Room,” then “The Facts.”

it is a shame that this happens, but as long as the public continues to buypets from these types of places it will continue to happen. Any pet stores should have strict regulations from where their pets are coming from and have frequent inspections of their suppliers.

A picture is worth a thousand words or should we say a video is worth a thousand words.
The fact: cruel actions to innocent animals!!! Simple as that.

Someone commented earlier...Adopt, don't buy. Good point, considering all the overcrowded shelters.

if it makes you feel any better koronin, i have read all the posts here and the posts left by you and suppleupagus were the ones that convinced me that PETA is not to be trusted and to wait until the actual facts come out...that being said, you have done a great job here trying to tell people that it is a VENDOR of PetSmart, not PetSmart who is being challenged by PETA and that PETA's video can be anything they want it to be through editing...hopefully others are figuring it out like i did

Shame On You Petsmart! Isn't Petsmart a pet store? Why would anyone think that they would treat animals humanely. Are they better than any other pet store? I doubt that! Pet Smart should not be allowed to sell animals period. I've also seen some animals that are in bad shape that some rescue groups bring into Pet Smart for adoption. I'm not comfortable buying pets at any pet store especially one with a big name...PetSmart.

Why is this not on the regular news. Simple it's PETA. PETA lies and exaggerates everything. More than likely most of what they are saying is NOT true. I doubt they can prove what they are claiming so any news entity that has any credibility will not report anything that PETA claims.

It's sad that PETA has developed such a negative reputation for itself, even among animal activists. They are a little to extreme. I want to support PETA, because I believe in their theories, but they just are very biased and exaggerated. I wish they really would just provide the public with the facts, instead of making everyone doubt them. Because you have to doubt them now...

I used to live in the area of NC where PETA workers were caught illegally dumping the bodies of animals they had euthanized. They used the trash bin behind our local Food Lion. As far as I am concerned, I would not trust anything that organization says or claims to have documented.

I think before we jump all over this, we need to take into consideration a few things..... We don't have all the facts yet, only what PETA has put out there. Several of their stories have turned out to be exagerated, so let's see the facts first. Plus, these places should have been regularly inspected for state or federal agencies, so if these allegations are true and the agency inspections don't reflect problems, they are the ones that should be questioned on this. Petsmart should not have said they would stand by the company without full information but by that same token, they cannot check every distributor. They rely on the mandated inspections. If these inspections did not turn up anything, then they may not have known. I'm not defending Petsmart since I don't know either, but I think we need to hold judgement until all the facts are in. The real people that need to be held accountable are the ones that are not caring for these pets, if these allegations are true. If the inspections didn't catch these issues, then they too should be held accountable. Let's get all the facts first.

The stores are NOT doing this. The people who PETA claims are doing this is the distributor/breeder. However since this is PETA I highly doubt most of it. Video is so easily edited. PETA will do and say anything to get their point across even if they are wrong. Oh and they will not admit to being wrong, even when it is proven in a court of law that they were wrong.

I agree, isnt that what any of us would want? What if YOU were wrongly accused, wouldnt you want people to stick by you while the matter was cleared up? Petsmart is sticking by them during the investigation, as they should. Just because this video comes out doesnt mean anything. We dont know where or when that tape was made. We dont even know if its inside Rainbow Exotics. Theres too many ifs and not enough facts. Not to mention Peta supposedly comes out with this and then starts slamming petsmart and telling people to boycott without giving petsmart a chance to even do anything about this situation. Peta is jumping the gun and trying to rally the troops because they have something against people owning pets. PERIOD. Peta believes no one should have any pets at all, including guide dogs. Are you reading this? GUIDE DOGS. Peta is nothing more then a bunch of extremist bullies and I am sticking with petsmart until I know more

I don't like the sound of this either. I am a Petsmart customer and before they 'stand by' the other company they'd better seriously investigate these allegations. I respect the work that PETA does because they do what a lot of people wouldn't dare to but they do get a bit extreme at times - even for me who would have a hard time putting any human before an animal. Let's just get to the bottom of this and make sure the animals are protected and treated well. I think I'll hold off on frequently Petsmart until I find out what really happened ......

PETA is the pot calling the kettle black. They kill almost all the animals they take into their so called shelter. They want the eradication of companion animals. I cannot respect anything they do or say. Actually I do not believe anything they say. Anytime I hear PETA linked to anything I automatically disregard whatever it is out of hand. PETA are known to lie and exaggerate everything.

Just a sample of what PETA really stands for:
PETA president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk has described her group’s overall goal as “total animal liberation.” This means no meat, no milk, no zoos, no circuses, no wool, no leather, no hunting, no fishing, and no pets (not even seeing-eye dogs). PETA is also against all medical research that requires the use of animals.

Despite its constant moralizing about the “unethical” treatment of animals by restaurant owners, grocers, farmers, scientists, anglers, and countless other Americans, PETA has killed over 14,400 dogs and cats at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. During 2005, PETA put to death over 90 percent of the animals it collected from members of the public.

I think that this will help open the eyes of the public that not just dogs and cats go through a "warehouse" sort of situation before they are sent to pet shops. Pet shop animals; therefore, are usually not very healthy and often die after they are purchased. This kind of care is not fair to the animals whether its a guinea pig, rat or ferret.

Obviously this is a distressing story but I hope people do not decide to boycott Petsmart. They do a lot of valuable work by giving over space in all their retail outlets to cat & dog shelters to adopt out homeless animals instead of selling them. Any boycott of Petsmart would have repercussions on those shelters who take advantage of the partnership with Petsmart to house thousands of homeless animals each year

I wouldn't judge PetSmart too harshly yet. While I don't think any pet store should sell live animals (pet stores should just sell pet SUPPLIES), PetSmart was relying on reports from the proper agencies. I usually don't take PETA very seriously. I have heard horror stories from dog show people who scramble to protect their animals FROM PETA people when they show up at dog shows. They've been known to "doctor" videos just to make their point. While mistreatment of any animal sickens me, I question PETA's ethics and methods.
