Perpetual Care: The Answer to Pets Who Outlive Owners

Browse News

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- It's a hard topic to think about, but what will happen to your pets when you die? Who’ll take care of them?

Near Albuquerque one no-kill shelter is offering a special program that could be a solution for some pet owners.

The folks at Watermelon Mountain Ranch Animal Center recently built a house at the request of a pet owner named Anthony who is very sick.

When he can no longer care for his four pets -- which includes two African Grays named Elvis and Buster, a dog named Leche and a cat named Annie -- they will move into the newly erected structure.

From the outside, it looks like a small cottage, but is really a very big dog house and the blankets on the floor will be replaced with a room full of their future owner’s furniture.

“To recreate as much of a home environment as we can for those animals,” Mike Davis, communications director at Watermelon Mountain Ranch, told Pet Pulse. “To make it feel as close to home as we possibly can.”

The house is the first to go up as part of the ranch's perpetual care program.

“There has to be some resource for people who are in those sorts of situations,” Rick Dillender, facilities manager, said. “A perpetual care program like ours is really the best of all worlds from our point of view.”

Like the other animals at Watermelon Mountain Ranch the perpetual care pets will have a place to live until they too pass on.

Or -- if their owner chooses -- until they are adopted.

The cost of care varies with the size of the pet -- between $1,100 and $2,000 a year.

“These animals are given daily health and wellness maintenance,” Dillender said. “They’re given interaction and training with qualified staff.”

Some people believe perpetual care programs could be the answer to the question -- What will happen to my pets if something happens to me?

“This is something that as our population ages, we need to answer and we hope that this does it,” Davis said.

Currently, while there are only a few perpetual care programs across the country the number of pets depending on their owners to provide for their future is growing.

The estimates vary widely, but the numbers are troubling. Each year anywhere from half a million to four million pets become homeless, because of an owner’s death.

With no one left to take care of them, these animals may end up in shelters, and those that can’t be adopted could be euthanized.

That fear is what drove Anthony to provide for his animals.

“He cares as much for them as anyone does for the rest of their family,” Dillender said. “He wants to see that they’re cared for properly and we’re going to guarantee that it happens.”

Watermelon ranch expects to build several more cottages on their 10 acres for other pet owners who want that same guarantee.

Thats an absolutely fantastic idea. I wonder how it is set up to pay for the area before the person passes... or is it paid out of a life insurance policy? Great concept though.

i think this is wonderful!! about a week ago i inquired about a what to do if i die before my babies!! how reassuring to know there is a place like watermelon ranch.and god bless the folks that came up with the idea.i have no doubt there are countless people like myself that even though they are young they think of the "what if" as many of us have babies that are not easy to place not just because of behavior issues but because of the treatment and lifestyle they are used to living.my babies are spoiled and my hermie would need somebody very special because he has severe seperation anxiety.due to being abandoned prior to being adopted by me.

This is a great idea, but only one solution to the problem, and I think I like other ones better, like passing your pets on the friends and family.

This is an awesome idea. I am surprised though at the cost. I do not see how the place could operate on $1,100-2,000 fee per pet per year. With staff, facility, vet, care,.....expenses. It does not seem as though that would cover the cost. Unless, they look at some pets require less expense some years than others so they would offset one another. Interesting concept though.

This is a wonderful idea. I will have to do more research and see about adding a similar program to my rescue.

There should be places like this all over to ease the elderly and anyones peace of mind for their animals welfare if they go before their pets.

What great work they are doing @ Watermelon Mt. Ranch. This is the 2nd story on Zootoo about their work there. It's a wonderful, heartwarming idea that they are addressing for owners. I never really gave it much thought as I am young. I do know though that birds live along time compared to other pets. For pet owners to have these options is a awesome thing. Pets are family & that is being recognized more & more. Now the laws need to follow.

Aw now this is really awesome, as it's so sad when animals are left with shrugged shoulders when something happens to their owners. It's so important that arrangements are made, whether with friends/relatives or a place like this. My grandma for instance is 94 and has a cat she loves to pieces. Well it's agreed that if her cat outlives her, I take it, so she doesn't have to worry. It's very important even when we don't want to think about it! You have to think about the animals too!

What a wonderful program. I know I have friends who said we could will the dogs to them which we have. But still. To know they could be together if you had no other place for them, the Watermelon Mountain Ranch house would be great.

Can they move to Rockford, Illinois! It is sad, but here in my state, my local area we do not have anything like that. I work in a hospital caring for those with cancer, and I hear them tell me about their pets 'children', and how they miss them, and how they worry about what will happen to them when they pass on. Last night, I cared for a woman who can no longer care for herself, and all she has is her sister, who was recently hopsitalized as well. Both their dogs were sent to the local animal control and are currently being held there until a decision can be made. I had her call the A.C., and they discussed calling the vet, and possibly housing them there until they are both back on their feet. But looking at the situations both sisters are going through...nursing home stay, I highly doubt they will be going home. So say a prayer for these ladies who really have no one but each other, and their loving dogs. A.C., would have put them down in a short time as they are both around 11 years old.

This sounds like a wonderful program. I would hope that my daughter or my son would care for my pets. Right now today, my choice would be my daughter because my son doesn't act responsible enough. They would both come into a substantial amount of money at my death and I would hope they would use a portion of that to take care of my animals.

I understand all of you that commented, "This is a wonderful idea, but not for me", but not all people have that option so it is good to know that someone is working on a solution for those who do not have the option of passing their pets care on to a family member. By making this option public, though, it may get people thinking more about making arrangements now for the care and welfare of their pets should they, themselves, pass on before their pets.

It's an option for some people, but NOT for me & Kelsie. Kelsie with be with FAMILY not strangers. Sorry, it's not an option for us. I want her to be able to have a regular life with a loving 'sub mom or dad' OF MY CHOICE if something should happen to me. I'm very picky about who even dogsits for Kelsie, let alone someone who would be 'replacing' me.

This is a great idea for those who have no one they could depend on giving their pet a good home. I see so many people in the nursing home I work at who wish they could have kept their pet or even known what happened to them. So many don't have someone to trust with their beloved friends or someone willing to take on additional responsibilities of other pets.

That is a different solution...I guess as a parent, at the same time I was deciding what should happen to my children if I pass away, I also thought about where my pets would go. I'm covered, but it's good that there are places like this for people who love their pets but don't have family to care for their animals if their owners pass away.

As a senior citizen, this would be wonderful if I had no other options. Luckily, my children love my animals almost as much as I do and I always have a plan for my animals BEFORE I adopt them. I cannot imagine leaving the happiness of my best friends to chance. For those not so lucky as I, I hope there is an option like this available for them.

While this may be the only option for some, I would prefer that my pets be in a home with a family who loves and cares for them. What happens to these animals if the shelter closes? After reading this article, I plan to talk to my family/friends about the subject and make sure this base is covered.

Planning for you pets future should something happen is the same as planning for your childrens future in he same circumstance. Research and discussions with family and friends as well as a very specified will is the key. For those that may not have family and sadly no more friends around then something like this might be their only option.

I sounds like a good idea, but what if the pet gets an manageable, but expensive to manage illness? Will there be funds for this, or will the animal be put down. What about human/pet social interaction, will there be staff living in these cottages so the pets are not alone.

I think this is better than what most people have now, but a better idea would be to set up a legal guardianship with a lawyer naming a friend or family member who has agreed to care for the pets (the same type of thing some people do for their minor children) and setting up a trust fund to cover the costs.

Though for some owners, this is a great solution, I wouldn't feel comfortable with this. The monetary amount they are asking for doesn't seem like it would over everything, especially vet bills which can rise very, very quickly. The average amount I spend on my macaw this year has already reached close to $1500 and it is only June! I don't see how that little amount of money could support an animal, especially an exotic, let alone a very LONG LIVED exotic for a year.

Good idea on paper maybe, but in practice? We'll see.

I was see video of this story.
It is too nice idea and it is too need in the society.
But every time I am surprise -this pets-dogs,cats are so sweet,so kind,so understanding and thankful and are so nice members to the every family which love and care animals.
Dogs, cats are so wonderful members of the families,so nice companions, friends in the life to the people. They are so outspoken and honest how small kids.
And how would be nice if all of them would find true homes with people which would be love them, give to them care, attention, love.
And all people, every person need to understand that to be human is better and that need to help to the dogs, cats, another pets in all situations of the life.
It is need to the people too very much.
I think that everybody need to be more human- is the sense, the mind of the life.

I have to admit that while this would be a good option for some folks, for me it isn't what I would feel comfortable with. Were something to happen to my wife and I, Hoover will get to spend the rest of his time with my daughter and if she is not able to take him he will go live with one of several friends who I have discussed this with in the past.

I believe that there are circumstances that would dictate for some folks that this is the thing to do and I know that they will be doing it for the right reasons for them. Were my situation different I might opt for this option also. I think that it is a good thing that it is available but, as has been pointed out - people need to do their research before doing anything.

Julie (see below) has made a very good point. You need to do your homework and not be overly trusting. This might be a good thing if it is run by good people. It could also be a huge scam. In some cases it might be better contact and learn about the area rescue groups and shelters. That way you can leave better instructions about what you want or don't want to happen.

Would you trust what/who you held most dear to strangers? No matter how well-meaning this may be, the man who thought of it will not live forever. People and lives change, that shelter's management may and likely will change eventually, etc. If we want to protect our pets from falling into less than ideal conditions: 1. Their care (and the funding of that care) must be specified in our wills. This means that a "living will" is not sufficient. A more complex and detailed will is needed. 2. Family and friends' health changes, too, and the person you may want to provide for your pet, should you become incapacitated/die may not be the same person in ten or twenty years. 3. Insurance agents (mine has been around for almost fifty years) should be consulted to learn what types of insurance you can get (and afford) that can ease your decisions. 4. Read more about what the rich and famous do when they die and leave their pets behind. Do they turn their pets over to a shelter? I just believe that, while this shelter may mean well, there is much, much more to your pet's happiness and health than should be a snap decision.

I agree that a well thought out will is necessary, but I believe that you are missing the point. This is an alternative to sending your pet off to a city run shelter where euthanasia may be in the animals near future. And not everyone is fortunate to have the friends or family that can provide care for their animals once they are gone.

Au contraire re: "This is an alternative to sending your pet off to a city run shelter where euthanasia may be in the animals near future." Far from "missing the point," I did not imply that such a fate as that to which you allude was the only alternative. There are many alternatives, each with its own pros and cons.

I think this is a great idea, we get tons of owner surrendered Labradors in our rescue from family member that don't want to care for their parents pets when they either pass on or put into a care center. I still don't understand how people can get rid of their parents pets, unless they truely can't take them in. What a great solution for people. I always tell my husband if I die before my dog Casey, she is to go to my mother, cause I know she would continue her agility work. Even though I know my husband will most likely keep her, its more of a joke. And I know my mother would take her in a heart beat.
