Pedigree Issues Limited Dog Food Recall

Browse News

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Mars Petcare US has announced a voluntary recall of 100 of the 20-pound bags of PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites sold in Southern California and Las Vegas to a limited number of Albertsons locations due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Last week, a component that should have been on hold due to positive testing results was inadvertently shipped to the company’s Tracy, Calif., facility and used in the production of 100 bags of PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites with best buy dates of 07/2009.

PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites is a multi-component dry pet food.

“Our primary concern is the safety and welfare of our pet owners and their pets,” the Mars Petcare company said in a statement released on its Web site. “We have already notified Albertsons and are working with them to retrieve any bags still in their stores or distribution centers.”

Currently, there have been no complaints or reports of injury resulting from consumption or handling of the recalled product.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Also, animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and potentially infect other animals or humans.

The company is asking consumers, who might have purchased the possibly tainted food, to return the product to Albertsons for a full refund.

Mars Petcare US is cooperating fully with the Food and Drug Administration on this matter.

This is the third recall since August 2007 for the Mars Petcare’s family. The first involved Salmonella contaminated 50-pound bags of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry dog food which was sold in two Pennsylvania stores.

The second case also involved Salmonella contamination, where five-pound bags of Krasdale Gravy dry dog food sold to stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania were recalled.

Owners with questions about this most recent recall, can call Mars Petcare at 1-877-568-4463, or visit Petcare.Mars.com.

Recalled Pet Food Product: PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites; Size: 20-pound bags; UPC Code: 23100 14719; Lot Code: 830BFCAT02; Best Buy Date: 07/2009; Best Buy Date Location: Back of bag.

It is so hard to know what to feed any more. You want to trust and hope you pick the right brand, but you never know.

Hope Mars/Pedigree can get their stuff together.

It is always so frighting when you read something like this. This is not my primary food but I do get it upon occasion since I go to Costco for the Kirkland. We are hearing so much of this lately, in human food as well. Makes you wonder what is going on or is it just getting reported more now.

The food should have been destroyed immediately if there was a potential risk - particularly if it was only 100 bags. This one stinks.

I'm glad they are recalling this food BEFORE any animals get sick. But how do people that bought this food find out? I miss important stories on the news all the time. What if it was my dog food and I missed it on the news or on the internet?

To some degree all processed food, whether for human or animal, runs a risk of contamination. Does anybody remember the peanut butter recall about a year ago? More than likely there is some kind of cover up on the company's part. Really - only 100 bags recalled. Give me a break. I just pray no animals were sickened or worse. Thx for reading. Margie

Has anyone done any research or do you currently feed your dog a "raw" diet. I read about this on a blog. The lady feeds raw meats and rice and veggies to her dogs. She said her animals favorite treat was raw chicken legs (the bones don't crack in raw chicks). Just wondering.

A raw diet is the absolute best thing you can feed your dog, in my opinion. I would if I could, but it's just not in my cards right now. It is not only extremely time-consuming, but it takes a LOT of research before you even start, to figure the best raw diet for your dog. You must be sure you are getting your dogs all of the nutrition they need, while not feeding them anything that may be harmful. You can't just go chopping up some meat and veggies and call it a day. It has to be the right meats, the right veggies, the right supplements, if necessary. If you don't get them what they need, you can do more harm than good.

My best friend feeds high-quality commercial diet (same brand I use) in the morning, and feeds raw at supper. That is a good way to start. That way, if your recipe isn't exactly perfect in the beginning, they will still get their proper nutrition, while you perfect your raw diet.

We have been feeding raw since January and have never thought about going back. Heidi just loves it and I have never seen her so excited for her food. It took me 4 months of research before switching but it was well worth it. There are a lot of great groups and resources if you are interested. The raw forum on dogster is great and the raw group on yahoo is amazing. If you have any questions just let me know.

The more and more I read about the dog food industry the angrier I got. The standards for dog food aren't very high. If I was to feed a dog food I would look at Evo or some other high quality food. You can find good info on the dog food research site.

Good luck.

Make sure you read your labels. Some of the stuff that is "vet recommended" is also garbage, IAMS included. Mostly corn, wheat, and by-product. The reason the vets recommend it is because they get paid to. They sign contracts with either IAMS or Hill's (Science Diet). In exchange for pushing that junk onto people, they get money and/or free products. I love my vet, but they sell Science Diet. Granted, they only sell the prescription stuff, which I hope is better (though I haven't yet done an analysis, so I can't really speak for the prescription stuff yet), but it is in no way as healthy as the high quality foods.

I equate it to feeding your children nothing but Big Macs and Taco Bell. That's the same type of nutrition your dog will get eating garbage like Pedigree and such. Pedigree and the like.

My vet does sell special foods but I'm happy to say that they have never pushed any kind of food on me. I did overhear a groomer talk about a dry dog food that she said had all these really good things that she had normally added to her dog's food. So I bought some and two weeks later it got hit by the BIG pet food recall. Very hard to know what is safe now.

Really ridiculous, nothing for us or our pets is safe anymore. Before our rats died, we stopped buying the rat food because it all had corn in it, and that is bad for the rats I was told. We were feeding fruits and veggies and stuff like that to them instead. I am not sure how cartlidge is different than the bone that pedigree has. They have always presented themselves as high quality, and I have bought it before.

Bone is bone. Cartilage is not the same as bone. Cartilage has Chondroitin which is good for the joints. Cartilage is simply a natural, non-synthetic way of getting the cartilage. Bone doesn't have that.

Pedigree is one of the worst dog foods on the market anyway. It's nothing but corn, ground bones, wheat, and fillers. There's not a whole lot of nutrition in Pedigree. You will have to feed your dogs twice as much as you would a high quality food. It will cost you a lot more in the long run.

Honest. Read your labels. There shouldn't be any corn, wheat, or bones. There shouldn't be any by-product or coloring. Pedigree is loaded with all of that. It really is a horrible food. No way would I feed that to my boys.

Ingredients:
Ground Whole Corn, Meat And Bone Meal, Ground Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Animal Fat (Preserved With Bha/Bht), Wheat Mill Run, Wheat Flour, Natural Flavor, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Caramel Color, Chicken By-Product Meal, Rice, Vegetable Oil (Source Of Linoleic Acid), Vitamins (Choline Chloride, Dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate [Source Of Vitamin E], L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate [Source Of Vitamin C*], Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate [Vitamin B1], Biotin, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement [Vitamin B2], Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement), Minerals (Zinc Sulfate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Sulfate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Potassium Iodide), Added FD&C And Lake Colors (Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Blue 2, Red 40).

There is absolutely nothing good in that food. There is nothing they can actually use.

Try switching your dog to a high quality diet for one month. I won't even advocate a certain brand; I'm not advertising for anyone. One month and your dog will have more energy, will have a softer, healthier coat, better breath, and, here's a big one, healthier, less smelly poop. And half as much poop. Dogs on foods like Pedigree poop more because there is more garbage in there that can't be used by the body. It's just in there to take up more space in a bag, and make your dog feel full. Oh yeah, and to make you buy more because they have to eat twice as much.

Here's my dogs' food ingredients:
Ingredients
Beef
Lamb Meal
Potatoes
Egg
Sunflower Oil
Buffalo
Lamb
Venison
Beef Cartilage
Herring Oil
Natural Flavors
Apples
Carrots
Tomatoes
Alfalfa Sprouts
Garlic
Cottage Cheese
Potassium Chloride

I'm not advertising for any food, but my dogs are on EVO, red meat small bites. Some other good ones are Canidae, California Natural, any Innova product, Wellness is pretty good, and there are several more. Nutro used to be good, but since it got bought out by the Mars company, they killed the recipe. It's garbage now, and may possibly be linked to several dog deaths.

The issue with these is that they are more expensive than other brands, and they can sometimes be harder to find. Still, you'll only have to feed them about half as much, so a bag will last almost twice as long.

About the treats, that is so true. Read your labels on the treats. Don't buy anything that is made in China, Mexico, or anywhere that doesn't have certain standards. I'm not saying the USA is the best, but I don't buy anything for my dogs that isn't made here. Not just distributed, but manufactured.

Nikki B.

Oh yeah, there are two that are relatively inexpensive, and are better than the Pedigrees, etc. They're not quite up there with the EVOs and Canidaes, but they are pretty good: Blue Buffalo, and Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul.

I saw "Chicken Soup..." at the store and thought, "Oh great. This is gonna be a big bag o' crap," but when I turned it around and read the label, I saw that it was not half bad. We have a dog that comes to the daycare that is on it, and she is lean, muscular, energetic, and has a beautiful coat.

Although Mars Petcare seems to be a responsible company, things just keep breaking down in the food pet food as well as the human pet industries. Inadvertent shipping of and subsequent production of dog food with a component that had positive testing results is frightening indeed.

We have all come to understand that the FDA is understaffed and probably underfunded and that we cannot depend upon them for our safety.

Can't imagine where all this will end.
