Pedigree Issues Limited Dog Food Recall

Browse News

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Mars Petcare US has announced a voluntary recall of 100 of the 20-pound bags of PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites sold in Southern California and Las Vegas to a limited number of Albertsons locations due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Last week, a component that should have been on hold due to positive testing results was inadvertently shipped to the company’s Tracy, Calif., facility and used in the production of 100 bags of PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites with best buy dates of 07/2009.

PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites is a multi-component dry pet food.

“Our primary concern is the safety and welfare of our pet owners and their pets,” the Mars Petcare company said in a statement released on its Web site. “We have already notified Albertsons and are working with them to retrieve any bags still in their stores or distribution centers.”

Currently, there have been no complaints or reports of injury resulting from consumption or handling of the recalled product.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Also, animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and potentially infect other animals or humans.

The company is asking consumers, who might have purchased the possibly tainted food, to return the product to Albertsons for a full refund.

Mars Petcare US is cooperating fully with the Food and Drug Administration on this matter.

This is the third recall since August 2007 for the Mars Petcare’s family. The first involved Salmonella contaminated 50-pound bags of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry dog food which was sold in two Pennsylvania stores.

The second case also involved Salmonella contamination, where five-pound bags of Krasdale Gravy dry dog food sold to stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania were recalled.

Owners with questions about this most recent recall, can call Mars Petcare at 1-877-568-4463, or visit Petcare.Mars.com.

Recalled Pet Food Product: PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites; Size: 20-pound bags; UPC Code: 23100 14719; Lot Code: 830BFCAT02; Best Buy Date: 07/2009; Best Buy Date Location: Back of bag.

This doesn't surprise me a lot. The majority of the pet food recalls have been on cheap junky food. To me, if you're buying 50 pounds of food for $15, you should guess that that quality just isn't there. They know they're selling junk, so it shouldn't be a shock that they aren't using the best practices to make sure it's safe.

I lost my cat thanks to the last set of recalls in the pet food industry. It's an awful thing to lose a pet thanks to someone else's negligence. The FDA really needs to crack down already. It's getting ridiculous.

I am very concerned about pet food recalls. But I am even more concerned about what I've learned about much of the pet food industry in general. Many pet food companies, including Iam's pet food, pay research facilities to conduct extremely cruel, barbaric and unnecessary tests on cats and dogs, and other animals. I have viewed some of the undercover footage on www.peta.org It is most heartbreaking, shocking and outrageous. It shows dogs and cats driven mad by being kept confined in isolation in cold steel cages. The dogs often have their vocal cords cut so that the researchers won't have to listen to the dogs' cries for help as they are being cut into. I am so disgusted at how a pet food company who professes to care about pets can perform torturous experiments on them, and lie to the general public about it through keeping it a dark secret.

Wow! I haven't heard of this recall at all until now. I have fed my 3 dogs this brand of pedigree since 2001. I am curious now as to what brand of food I should use. My female mix breed has a sensitive stomach, so I am concerned about changing her diet. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated!

You can boil chicken, cook up brown rice, and blend veggies in the blender. Add some vitamin E. I make a lean roast, potato, carrot, with low sodium gravy. Put meal size amounts in small freezer bags. I cook for my dog every two weeks.
And it really doesn't cost that much. Hope that helps!

I find all recalls on any food very upsetting. The ones on pet food make me very nervous as animals cannot tell you if they don't feel right. Because their nature is to be stoic, the problem has gone on for a while before you can see a change. If it is caused by food, you have been adding to it by feeding the cause to them. I'm looking for a diet I can make for my dogs that is healthful, tasty and doesn't require processed items.

In this day and age, no food should ever be allow to be tainted in the first place let alone allowed to be tested, contamination discovered AND then be allowed to be shipped out. I hope the FDA gets on Mar's about this and all the food products!!

This is actually a LOT worse than JUST a recall. These 100 bags of food tested POSITIVE for salmonella being in them. They were being HELD for testing purposes. So how in the world did someone send out the contaminated food to be put back into the homes of pet parents??? Are you kidding me? This is an abomination. They should have their license pulled. They already closed one plant saying it did not have Salmonella, but they weren't going to be using it anymore! Why would they close down a facility that was not infected? There is no reason to do it, unless it is infected.
I hope the FDA fines them bigtime for allowing food with a positive test to go back out into the public. And what is with them saying that no one has complained, and no animals have died? Yes, they did. I have a new grave in my back yard that marks the final resting place of my beloved dog, Shadow. I have read of several deaths, and illnesses. All of my dogs got sick, but little 8 pound Shadow couldn't take it. No animals have been affected. Give me a break.

The ingredients are not really optimal for a dog's diet. They tend to use a lot of products containing gluten (wheat, etc) and fillers loke corn and soy. dogs can survive on it no problem but thier nutritional needs are better met by foods like Canidae, Innova, California Natural, etc. a

Basically I dont really trust thier processing facilities either, they are owned by M&M Mars which is not a dog food company, as we all know and is therefore noth thier priority or within thier expertise.

Stories like this always get me upset. The food should have been tested before it even left the factory. Any REPUTABLE company would do that. Our pets are not guinea pigs!

I agree. I have used pedigree for six years and have never had a problem. My dogs have thrived well. I am glad that the company stepped up and took responsiblity. Their recalls have small if you compare them to other major brands. ( I have 12 year English Pointer and she is doing great on pedigree)

Does this never end? What is happening in America that we cannot keep our food and our pets food safe? There need to be stricter laws concerning our food sources.

i heard a little bit about this earlier today, and i'm glad to have all the facts cleared up now (thanks, zootoo)
thankfully, it doesn't affect my area, but i hope that all those who did buy the dog food catch it in time, and that no one gets hurt.

This should not be happening again and again. It is just as imortant that their food be as safe as ours.

i agree that the contamination shouldn't continue to happen... but it is a big company, and i guess they are prone to mistakes such as this - i am glad that they're recalling voluntarily and cooperating well - at least it wasn't an intentional attempt to harm the animals...

After the numerous pet food recalls, I began cooking my pet's food. This was welcomed by my pets, but it is a cumbersome process depending on number of pets you have and food requirements. Home-cooking, or now there are places that bake the food and deliver to your door, may become more and more of an option unless trust is restored, or enforced.

I think the FDA needs to regulate pet food, this is getting out of hand.

I think that our society needs to demand there be stricter regulations on pet food production like there is on human food. There is not enough pressure on the food industry to ensure that all the food they produce be of the utmost quality.

I know this is old news, but since there is another recall and no news article in Zootoo, I will comment here. Because of so many recalls lately, I have decided to try another dog food brand. Flint River Ranch. We will see how my pets like this all natural food.

If your dog has diarrhea mixing rice with their food and even some unflavored Metamucil helps to firm up stool. Pedigree is really not a very good food to begin with. Neither is IAMs Beneful Purina or any of the other foods you have usually heard of. The first several ingredients are usually corn (we know what happens when our body gets corn, we poop it out and don’t use it, same with dogs) meat by products (the take the meat off of whatever it is and you get the bones, feathers, coat, feet, beaks, etc) and white or brewers rice (no nutritional value, just a filler) because of this our dogs need to eat more to get the nutrients they need and poop a lot more too. Also...science diet and eukanuba are not very good foods either. They used to be but they were bought out by other companies who, to save money, changed the ingredients to fillers and by products. These foods cost about the same as the all naturals foods and you are getting pedigree quality food. You can check all the ingredients yourself. Stay away from the first 3 ingredients being corn, by products of any kind, and white or brewer’s rice. Go for foods with chicken, chicken meal, or any meats that don’t have by product after them, and BROWN rice. These are good foods. Try going to a specialty pet store and ask about a better food. Precise, Royal Canin, and Verus are all really good foods. When you look at the ingredients they will be along the lines of Chicken, brown rice (the only rice with nutritional value for dogs), and usually another protein source such as chicken meal (chicken meal is just dehydrated chicken, very good) your dogs will eat much less of the food so even though it cost a bit more you go through less food and it ends up saving you money. They also poop less, live longer, and are overall healthier. I have four shih tzus and I feed them Royal Canin dry food. 10lbs of that food last us over a month. 4 adults dogs eating only 10lbs of food between the 4 of them is pretty good! These foods are also all natural and organic so they are never involved in any recalls; you know your food is always safe. Go to your local pet store and ask about these brands (Precise, Royal Canin, Verus, Wellness, California Natural, Innova, Canidae, Merrik) many stores, such as Pets Plus, will even give you your money back for the dog food if your dog doesn’t like it and has programs such as buy 10 bags get your 11th free. It's worth a try and trust me your dogs will love it.

Pedigree was quick to do this recall and yet here we are another month later with yet another much larger one that involves so many brands - it's a sorry state of affairs for our pets and humans too - for instance the recall in China this week for baby formula!!

We are hearing far to much about contamination in our food sources for both pets and humans. I do not use this food but I do use Purina One occasionally and it is scary to wonder if you are feeding something to your pet that could make them very ill or kill them.

I think this is just too scary! We have had so many recalls in the last year. Not just with pet food, but also with our food and other probucts. Some of them where not even the right product recalled at first.
I started doing reserch and makeing my own food for my dogs and cats. They are doing great and vet checks have been better then when they where on bought food. I recomend doing this! Always check with your vet before starting though. Make sure you feed the right balance of nutrients.

Not again! Lucky for us, we don't use pedigree. The last recall was awful!! Our dog got so sick and we lost one cat, Oscar. He was only 2 years old. He enjoyed snacking on the dog's food and that is what poisoned him. He thought he was a dog :) most of the time. The other cat we had then, Boo, was 15 and she did just fine because she never ate the dog's food. Hopefully the caught it early enough this time and less animals will suffer because of their negligence!!!!
