Pedigree Issues Limited Dog Food Recall

Browse News

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Mars Petcare US has announced a voluntary recall of 100 of the 20-pound bags of PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites sold in Southern California and Las Vegas to a limited number of Albertsons locations due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Last week, a component that should have been on hold due to positive testing results was inadvertently shipped to the company’s Tracy, Calif., facility and used in the production of 100 bags of PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites with best buy dates of 07/2009.

PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites is a multi-component dry pet food.

“Our primary concern is the safety and welfare of our pet owners and their pets,” the Mars Petcare company said in a statement released on its Web site. “We have already notified Albertsons and are working with them to retrieve any bags still in their stores or distribution centers.”

Currently, there have been no complaints or reports of injury resulting from consumption or handling of the recalled product.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Also, animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and potentially infect other animals or humans.

The company is asking consumers, who might have purchased the possibly tainted food, to return the product to Albertsons for a full refund.

Mars Petcare US is cooperating fully with the Food and Drug Administration on this matter.

This is the third recall since August 2007 for the Mars Petcare’s family. The first involved Salmonella contaminated 50-pound bags of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry dog food which was sold in two Pennsylvania stores.

The second case also involved Salmonella contamination, where five-pound bags of Krasdale Gravy dry dog food sold to stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania were recalled.

Owners with questions about this most recent recall, can call Mars Petcare at 1-877-568-4463, or visit Petcare.Mars.com.

Recalled Pet Food Product: PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites; Size: 20-pound bags; UPC Code: 23100 14719; Lot Code: 830BFCAT02; Best Buy Date: 07/2009; Best Buy Date Location: Back of bag.

It seems you can't trust human or pet food these days!

Pedigree purchased Nutro brand a while back, and unfortunately this once high-quality food is now one of the lowest qualities. You can expect both of these companies to have ingredient issues like this. They were both part of the melamine recall, and now this. If an article like this doesn't convince pet owners to upgrade their food choices, I can't imagine what will...

The website dog food analysis.com list dog food by stars according to their ingredients.I use Innova evo and it has no soy at all.The protein is from human grade meat protein.Google 6stardogfood, it list the ingredients of dogfoods from 6 stars down to 1 star. Some dogs can't eat wheat products because it causes allergies.
Pedigree has alot of corn fillers and it is not natural for dogs to eat a diet of 3/4 corn. These premium dog foods do have vegetables, fruit, and dairy(cottage cheese, ect) in amounts sufficient for dogs. The main ingredients are meat.

A 30 lb dog would only eat 1 cup a day of Inova evo(or any premium) as opposed to how many cups of corn filled(3)?They get the nutrients they need in less dog food.It also helps with their stool which is smaller and firmer(meaning they absorbed more of the quality nutrients,),they also have less problems with anal glands with firmer stools.Meaning easier clean up,a healthier dog,and I believe in the long run less vet bills.
I would rather pay 30 dollars for a bag that will last me a month as opposed to 8 dollars a bag x 2 because it won't satisfy them meaning 16 dollars anyway.Premium dog food = 40% protein, mass market kibble =20% or less.Dogs eat meat as their primary diet.

Glad they took responsibility and recalled it fast but I've never seen so many food recalls. These companies need to get it together.

This isn't the first time for Pedigree. They should change the name of their food to garbage with corn fillers and a chance of salmonella.

Sorry, but if you research dog foods you will find this is just not so. The reason their food was contaminated in the first place was cutting corners to an unacceptable extent. See www.dogfoodanalysis.com for individual reviews of each brand.

Natura pet foods have never been involved in any recalls because they use small, carefully monitored plants and never import ingredients or export work to save $$. Check their website for the foods they make.

My dog Molly's illness prompted me to take a closer look at what I was feeding my animals. I read that 50% of dogs in the US will die of cancer! That is astounding. Most of our pets have foods, vaccinations, & heartworm/flea meds in common. I have scaled back on the vaccinations and HW/flea meds. After doing much research, I found that the food that had everything I wanted for my animals was Natura Pet's Innova.

Good for you for doing your own research! Isn't it strange how all the "advances" in pet health care have led to lifespans that are half as long?? The world is full of misinformation about pet food, meds and surgeries... its our responsibility to make the healthiest choices on behalf of our pets- they depend on us!

Pedigree is being responsible by having the recall rather than trying to cover up there mistakes. It is just so scarey to hear after many dogs died last year from tainted pt food.

I agree, Nikki W. Just like you research proper nutrition for yourself and your children, know what it is you are feeding your pet. Ingredients like "by-products" and "animal fat" should scare the bejeezes out of you...

Not surprising, this food is crap. I would never feed my dog this garbage and I do not trust these commercial brands for a minute. How many times can companies recall foods like this before responsibile pet owners start looking into what they're feeding their animals and educating themselves on proper nutrition... I don't get it.

When is the American public going to understand that food companies are in it for the money and not the well-being of consumers? Pet food is big money and no government agency is going to derail that cash train.

It's hard to know what to feed you pets now. After the scare last year I would
have thought the pet food industry would do a better job of inspecting and not
letting it happen again. I don't use this brand, but lots of people do for their
pets.

I used to feed my dogs pedigree but did alot of research and found this IS NOT a healthy dog food. I switched all 3 of my dogs to Blue Buffalo. They've never had any recalls, contain no by-products and aren't mass produced.

This is the food I feed my dogs and they like it very much. I was very disappointed to learn that they stopped production in July and didn't recall until September. I don't know when it came to their attention but that seems like a big gap. My dogs already ate what was on the recall and they are fine, knock on wood....... Really makes you wonder what is safe anymore..........

What a shame. Pedigree, while not a brand I ever use, is a household name typically associated with "goodness" or "quality". In negligent instances like this, they should be responsible for the vet testing bills of any animal that was given this food.

After the last mass recall I decided that I was no longer going to trust these companies. I had several friends that lost pets to this horrible situation and I did not want it to be me. I have resorted to an all natural pet food. New Buffalo makes a brand for dogs called Blue you can purchase it at PetSmart stores. It is made with all natural ingredients that you and I can eat, no bi-products! I now feel safe that my dogs arent going to get ill from bad food.

Thanks letting us know about "Blue" Dog food. If we could just get everyone to protest and not buy dog food three months, I think we could send a clear message to the greedy corporate world. It's easily to make your own dog food and not really that expensive.

This certainly does not give you confidence in any pet food manufactuers who have components that test positive for salmonella and then let that prodect be shipped to their California plant. What was the product and where was it shipped from? If something tests positive for salmonella wouln't you disgard it?

No consistency in product. Canidae just changed their formula. I don't care what the dog food companies tell you, dog food does not supply all the vitamins needed.
