Pedigree Issues Limited Dog Food Recall

Browse News

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Mars Petcare US has announced a voluntary recall of 100 of the 20-pound bags of PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites sold in Southern California and Las Vegas to a limited number of Albertsons locations due to potential Salmonella contamination.

Last week, a component that should have been on hold due to positive testing results was inadvertently shipped to the company’s Tracy, Calif., facility and used in the production of 100 bags of PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites with best buy dates of 07/2009.

PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites is a multi-component dry pet food.

“Our primary concern is the safety and welfare of our pet owners and their pets,” the Mars Petcare company said in a statement released on its Web site. “We have already notified Albertsons and are working with them to retrieve any bags still in their stores or distribution centers.”

Currently, there have been no complaints or reports of injury resulting from consumption or handling of the recalled product.

Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination caused by handling of the pet food, in people as well, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Also, animals can be carriers with no visible symptoms and potentially infect other animals or humans.

The company is asking consumers, who might have purchased the possibly tainted food, to return the product to Albertsons for a full refund.

Mars Petcare US is cooperating fully with the Food and Drug Administration on this matter.

This is the third recall since August 2007 for the Mars Petcare’s family. The first involved Salmonella contaminated 50-pound bags of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry dog food which was sold in two Pennsylvania stores.

The second case also involved Salmonella contamination, where five-pound bags of Krasdale Gravy dry dog food sold to stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania were recalled.

Owners with questions about this most recent recall, can call Mars Petcare at 1-877-568-4463, or visit Petcare.Mars.com.

Recalled Pet Food Product: PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites; Size: 20-pound bags; UPC Code: 23100 14719; Lot Code: 830BFCAT02; Best Buy Date: 07/2009; Best Buy Date Location: Back of bag.

A little late to start getting concerned. Companies just don't seem to get that we animal lovers care as much about our pets food as ours. We just need to start yelling and stomping our feet more.

Another story about contaminated food. When are we going to get serious about this problem? When more animals or people die or get sick???

I think manufacturers need to take a little more time to make quality food. It costs them millions to recall, why not just make the food correctly in the first place.

This is getting beyond frustrating. We've been feeding our dogs Pedigree for years. We've just got too many animals to be cooking for each, but it just might come down to that.

Sad to see that even pet food is not safe. You think when you buy a brand or even from the vet it should be safe food for them. Guess the piece of turkey they got yesterday isn't so bad!

I sometimes feel like I shouldn't buy animal food & just feed my cat & dog what we eat. This is so scary. It is happening with name brand foods as well as the cheapest.

Is the increased number of recalls a sign of better monitoring of products by responsible agencies or shoddier work by the manufacturers of pet food? Whatever it is, it is disturbing.

Has anyone noticed just how many companies are tainted with Salmonella. Sounds like a CDC priority. This is making me paranoid...

This is getting scarry, pretty soon we won't be able to feed our pets commercial pet food at all, we will have to feed them the same things we eat.

A big brand, use caution!

I have been reading way too many articles on recalls for all kinds of pet food & treats. I am worried for my cat, dog, & rabbit. I haven't had to worry yet about my birds or fish but I am starting too. I have friends that hunt & they always made mush which was left overs mixed together for their hunting dogs. Of course it was mixed with some dog food. Growing up we always fed our dogs people food & it never bothered them. I am thinking about making homeade food for them. I have read where people have dog recipes instead of dog food. I am thinking of doing it as well.

I don't like buying Pedigree or Purina anymore because of the risks nowadays. Everything is outsourced & not monitored well. I buy PetPromise now instead because there are no risks!

Despite the fact that Pedigree acted quickly, how many animals are sick on a daily from the pesticides and other chemicals used to preserve dog food. We need stricter laws!

It appears that Pedigree acted quickly on this one. HOWEVER, if they have had THREE RECALLS in a little over a year...they should! I would have to question their quality control of raw materials if it is getting to the recall stages. This should be caught before shipment.

I am disappointed that pet food products keep getting tainted. Perhaps there should be more regulation for pet food companies. At least Pedigree recalled it quickly to avoid too many dogs being affected

Pedigree which is made by Mars is no friend to animals. You should check out the information that is on PETA. org's website about them! I won't buy their products since I read this.

We thank our local Humane Society of Cherokee County for being on top of this and quickly e-mailed all members for them to check. Well I had an aged cat that quickly got sick and died, just assumed it to be old age. THEN-my other aged cat started to throw up and have a messy stool. Thought it might be a hair ball or something, BUT in the nick of time got the email, checked my special kitty bag and found it to be one of the recalled bags. Ya, wal-mart took it back, and replaced it. But they could not replace a pet that we had over twelve years. Just when you thought the pet food industry was safe and had it together you get a name brand that you feel you should trust come up with another scare.

Wonder why the contaminated product was "on hold"? If something in my house was contaminated, I'd get rid of it before something like this happened! I do hope it was in the locations they stated as my dog in crunching on Pedigree as I type this. I'm glad they admitted the mistake and went public with it!

Well don't be fooled that this is a SMALL recall. In our VERY small shelter we had several bags that were donated which we obviously threw away. One of our volunteers also had a bag at home for his own dog who did develop some symptoms. Definitely check your supply if you have any pedigree. I think the recall was a bit larger than anyone wanted to admit.
