Paralyzed Man's Toes Eaten by Dog
LEXINGTON, Ky. - A pit bull is in quarantine this week after it allegedly chewed four toes off its paralyzed owner's left foot.
Terry Smith was brought to St. Joseph Hospital after a roommate found him in bed Wednesday morning, his sheets covered in blood.
The roommate, Tim Cantrell, says Smith was paralyzed from the waist down in an accident a few years ago. That's why he didn't feel it when his 6-month old pit bull China began gnawing on his foot.
Cantrell says he has found pieces of the missing digits on the floor, but so far no complete toes have shown up. He says the dog may have been attracted to sores on Smith's feet.
Animal control says the 6-month-old dog could be returned to its owner, and that it does not appear to be aggressive. For now, China will remain in quarantine pending her owner's release from the hospital.
However, Cantrell says his roommate loves his dog more than anything, and that if it weren't allowed to return home Smith would be devastated.
