Owner Punishes Dog by Filing Down Teeth

Browse News

McMINNVILLE, Tenn. – With a wagging tail and a frisky gait, Lucas is a young husky who greets the world with a friendly smile.

But his toothless grin tells another story about the dog that was rescued earlier this week after neighbors saw a Tennessee man beat his dog unconscious.

“He had 16 uppers and 14 lowers that have been ground all the way down,” said Warren County Humane Society President Andy Anderson. “The root and nerve are exposed and bleeding.”

Now, owner Christopher Barnett is charged with animal cruelty by the Warren County Sherriff’s Office.

“It’s awful what he did,” said Anderson who received the call from the witnessing neighbor. “It’s terrible and shouldn’t be done to any living creature. It’s a terrible thing to do.”

Investigators said Barnett wanted to punish the year and a half old dog for chewing up the house. They said he first beat Lucas, then ground away 30 of the dog’s teeth with a metal file.

“Apparently he chewed some wires up underneath his house and by grinding off his teeth he wanted to teach this dog that he would never chew his wires again,” Anderson said.

Now the dog is under the care of the Warren County Humane Society and, although Lucas will require extensive medical care that could cost thousands of dollars, the shelter has offered to pay for whatever he needs.

“No matter how much it costs, he’s going to get fixed because he deserves it,” said Anderson. “He’s a sweet boy and he didn’t need all this, and he’s going to get fixed up.”

In addition his damaged teeth, Anderson said Lucas’ eyes were blood shot and x-rays showed the dog has a fractured orbital, the bone surrounding the eye socket.

Currently, Lucas is an extreme pain and is being treated with painkillers and antibiotics. But even after his surgeries, he will always be a special needs dog.

“We will extract the teeth we can’t save and fill what we can to make it where the dog can eat, be he will never be normal for the rest of his life,” said Anderson who makes him special meals he can swallow.

“He’s a very trusting and loving dog, having gone through exactly what he has gone through,” said Anderson. “I think he is just wonderful.”

Barnett, a resident of Morrison, faces a hearing in April. In Tennessee, animal cruelty is a misdemeanor charge that carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison.

If Barnett is found guilty, it is possible that he could be one of the first people registered as an animal abuser. On Wednesday, Tennessee legislatures are voting on a bill that would require its residents to register as animal abusers, much like sex offenders. It could be the first registry of its kind in the entire nation.

If you’d like to help Lucas, donations can be sent to: Sparta Road Veterinary Clinic

4021 Sparta Hwy

McMinnville, TN 37110.

Donations should be specified for helping Lucas’ medical expenses.

This is just sick!!! He did this to the poor dog for chewing wires that can be replaced cheaply?!?! This poor dog will never have its teeth completely restored. I really hope they do pass the animal abuse registry for the entire nation. It might reduce the amount of cruelty done to animals.

Hi y'all! I'm Lucas, and I have been in my forever home since January 16, 2009. I just want to say thank you for your support.

Barnett was sentenced to:
* 11 months & 29 days in jail of which 75 days jail time must be served;
*100 hours of public (community) service;
*Attendance at an Anger Management Class;
*Restitution of $5,071.50 in costs for the care of Lucas to the Humane society of Warren County;
*Restriction of no future ownership of domestic animals, with the exception of horses, as Mr. Barnett is a farrier by training and occupation; and
*Surrender of my friend Honey, Barnett's Boxer to the Humane Society

Lucas: To hear from your personally is so special. I am glad your friend has been rescued. Ido think your former Master should not even be allowed to around ANY horses, and that included horses. Hopefully his clients will be as appalled as the rest of us are.

Great idea to have an animal abuse registery. I only hope it comes soon and all shelters will have access to it. For this idiot, I would exact the same punishment on him that he did to his dog.

Some people just need to be sterilized and have all of their dependents removed from their care, human and animal alike. If this man was willing to punish a pet like this, I can only imagine what he felt was appropriate punishment for people.

Why not put him in the same jail cell with the guy who sexually assaulted his Rottie? Wouldn't that be an interesting mix of 'nothing?'

What a great idea to have an animal abuser register. If people could be educated what that encompasses, they'd keep an eye on an animal abuser just a close as a sex offender!

The saddest part of this story is that the dog didn't shred the guy to pieces. The loyal boy tolerated the pain and abuse. It just goes to show you how beautiful these animals are.

As I sit and write with a gasp, I only hope that the dog will try to bite him again. Due to his stupid (that's being kind) behavior, the dog cannot break skin anymore but he can certain break bones! So, try something again bucko - - you will deserve what you get!

That is fantastic that there may be a Public Animal Offender List, I hope it happens and this creep is at the top of the list! One thing I hate reading is that this kind of horrible act of abuse is a misdemeanor punishable by one ONE year in prison! If someone did this to me, is that all they would get?! There is so much more punishment that this guy should be facing!

I never have a word that describes what I feel for these people. I would love to be on a jury that decides their punishment! In these cases it would be an eye for an eye or tooth for a tooth. And I mean that literally.
Just plain disgusting! HOW could anyone do these things!?
I hope this poor dog can be helped and find a wonderful family. I hope karma comes down hard on the lowlife!

I think anyone found to have abused animals should be on a Public Animal Offender List, so everyone will know who they are and what they have done. Maybe since they have no conscience embarrassment will do something. I am happy they are taking care of this poor animal but I think part of the money should come from HIM, I don't care if it takes 10 years, he should repay every penny spent to correct the abuse he caused.

Wow, this sorry brought tears to my eyes in seconds, as a long time husky owner....I understand what the breed brings, and to see that someone would do this to such a a sweet creature for doing something as petty as chewing on something/anything for that matter, i dont care, laying a finger on a dog in anger is unexceptable, much less the need to grind away its teeth. I hope he gets what is coming to him, believe in karma and keep a clean slate.

I just received an update on Lucas in the mail because I sent a donation. The good news is that the Grand Jury returned a true bill against the owner of Lucas and Honey. A jury trial will be held. The bad news is that it could take a year or more for the trial to take place. The two dogs will remain at a boarding facility and will for however long they must remain in protective custody. Lucas is a happy fellow and is shown enjoying play time in a large grassy field with Honey, who also bears many scars from abuse. Recently, Lucas visited the local high school and the special-education class baked and sold 350 cupcakes and donated the proceeds to help Lucas and other abused animals. So far the Lucas Foundation Fund also has helped and abandoned dog who was hit bay a car and so badly injured one rear leg had to be amputated, several mother dogs and their puppies who were dumped on a highway, and a starving colt.

If this bill passes, that would be a huge long deserved win for animal respect in this country. This man should have his teeth extracted and be left to suffer behind bars for the length of his small measly pathetic life.

He deserves more than he is going to get. I like the idea of having him file as an animal abuser to make it harder for him to ever be able to have another pet again but I think we need to do this nationwide.

This is so sad for that poor dog. My opinion is "an eye for an eye" The man should be strapped down and someone should file his teeth all the way down to his gums then when they are finished, they should take a board and bash him in the eye socket.

This is probably the worst case of abuse I have heard. It's especially touchy for me, because we have a husky, and I know what fantastic, fun and trusting dogs they are. How anyone can do this to his own pet is beyond me!

I can't believe he did that! If he didn't want his dog to chew stuff he didn't have to resort to such a thing! He could have used a muzzle. Of if he really didn't want it why didn't he give the dog away?

What a horrible person!
