Five ways to celebrate and promote pet adoption.

For those pet owners who have created a loving forever home for a four-legged family member, every day is a celebration of pet adoption. But each October, the American Humane Association and other rescue groups increase efforts to place those animals who are still in search of a permanent home through the national initiative Adopt-a-Dog Month.

At Zootoo, we're always looking for ways to help match homeless dogs with caring pet parents. Here are some of our favorite ways to honor Adopt-a-Dog Month.

(1) Promote Adopt-a-Dog Month through your local shelter or rescue group. If you're a volunteer at your local rescue organization, help them spread the word through free posters and activity books available at the American Humane Association's website. You can also check out other resources there, such as web banners for promoting the initiative on your own website.

(2) Encourage your friends to adopt a shelter pet. If you know someone who is considering pet adoption, let them know where to find shelter pets through Zootoo's "Adoptable Pets" page, powered by Petfinder.

(3) Volunteer or make a donation at your local rescue center. Even if you can't afford a cash donation, many gently used household items can come in handy, so ask your local shelter what they might be able to use! Find a center near you through our Pet Service Finder.

(4) Share your adoption story to encourage and inspire other individuals to take a homeless pet into their lives. Post your story through the American Humane website or on Zootoo's journal pages.

(5) Have some fun! As Zootoo reported last year, Carianne Burnley of Petsapalooza created a board game, "Fur-Ever Home: The Animal Rescue Game," to teach children about pet adoption. And best of all, a portion of the proceeds from sales of this educational tool goes to help animal rescue groups.
