NYC Marathoner Runs to Stop Dog Fighting

NYC Marathoner Runs to Stop Dog Fighting: For some, the New York City Marathon is all about finishing the race. For others, including several animal advocates, it's all about the animals. This is the story of one marathon runner who hopes to run dog fighting out of town.

NEW YORK -- Some 40,000 men and women from all over the world will converge on New York City this Sunday, Nov. 1, to run a grueling 26.2 mile course through the city's five boroughs for the ING New York City Marathon. Each runner has their own reason to run: a share in the $600,000 purse, bragging rights, or simply to prove they can.

And then there are those that are doing it for other reasons. One such runner is Brayden Mathews, a financial industry executive who will be lacing up his sneakers for United Action for Animals. In recent years, the 42-year-old animal advocacy group has taken an increasing role in ending the cruel "sport" of animal fighting, especially dog fighting, and it is for this that Mathews will run.

“In a way it’s good Michael Vick got caught,” said Mathews, referring to the infamous (and former) Atlanta Falcons quarterback who served jail time for his involvement in an illegal dog fighting ring and who now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles. “His arrest brought it to light again and hopefully will show others that there is no honor in doing this.”

Still, the 38-year-old athlete and advocate, who has already run the marathon for other animal causes five times before, worries that the sport has now burrowed even deeper into the criminal underground.

But why run for animals and not, say, cancer research?

“All of us, unfortunately, can point to a family member with cancer, so a lot of money and fund raising is already going toward it,” Mathews said. “But animals tend to take a backseat, and animal welfare is close to my heart.”

Mathews has been running somewhere between 35 to 45 miles per week for the last couple of months to get ready for the big day. His sponsors, consisting of friends, family and coworkers, have helped him raise more than half of the $5,000 goal he’s hoping to donate to UAA. Most donations have been in the $25 to $50 range, although one person gave $1,000 — not too shabby during a recession.

Other like-minded individuals are also running this year’s Marathon for animal charities. Mathews’ colleague, Cheryl Pientka, is part of “Team UAA.” There are also some 50 runners on “Team Animal League” for the North Shore Animal League who hope to raise a combined total of $300,000 for the famous Long Island-based shelter.

“One of the things people see is the sacrifice you’re making,” Mathews said. “The more pain you put yourself through, it seems, the more money you raise.”

To donate to Mathews and “Team UAA” visit www.ua4a.org You can also follow Mathews’ step-by-step marathon journey online in ‘real time’ by visiting the www.ingnycmarathon.org on race day and inputting his race number: 63491.

He's right, that animals take the backseat in donations to other things....so i'm very glad that some of these runners are willing to help out the animals.

Thank-you so much for doing this in the name of animal welfare.. i was just at a fundraiser in manhatten for a rescue shelter who takes in numerous dogs, especially pitbulls that have been targeted and used for bait in dog fighting. (GlenWild Animal Rescue) they have rehabilitated most but its a long road. Thank You for keeping the attention on the plight of these animals. They need people like all of us, constantly routing for them!

This is wonderful, I just wish that this article and articles of it's kind would hit the front page of the newspapers. If I wasn't a Zootoo member I would not know 90% of the animal news that I do because I am a member. Thank you Zootoo for all that you do to educate and inform people for the good of animals.

Kudos to Brayden Mathews! It is great that he is raising money to stop dog fighting. This is a horrible crime and needs to be kept in the news until it is completely stopped.

I had to give this article a thumbs up. You are getting the word out that this is a BIG problem that needs to be stopped. I love my pit bull!!! I will never understand how anyone could be so curel to an animal that can be so sweet and loving. Those dog fighters also give my dog a bad rap that she doesn't deserve. There needs to be harder puninshments for dog fighting. Michael Vick got a slap on the hand for what he did to those animals.

Good for him.. I hope he raises a bunch of money for a very worthy cause.. animal fighting is sick, cruel and damages in more ways than one.. it desensitizes young people and they are stifled in growth. How can you be the best person you can be and not see anything wrong with the animal fighting and torturing.

It truly is sad.. in many homes there is no childhood, no life for a kid to be a kid.. I pray things will improve but things keep getting worse.. I probably tell Kimber a bit more than she needs to know at this age.. but I want her to see everything.. she has a good heart and loves animals and people. I want to keep it that way. My daughter is the same way.

What a great guy! Since I have a pit mix, I know how dogfighting, which is not only extremely cruel & disgusting, makes certain breeds look bad.

like canned hunting where the animals are raised and let loose in a captive area and people pay to "hunt" them. that makes hunting into a sport

My hubby runs marathons all the time...he's pretty skinny! You should see the guy who won this one...he's a stick! Brayden looks much heavier then the professional marathoners. But I was happy to see someone from the US actually won!

Excellent. The more awareness not this is not acceptable in the USA the better. I wish muslims couldn´t sacrafice animals during Christmas time too. The USA can´t bend for everything that is okay in other countries. They certainly don´t for us.
