NYC Home to Dogfighting, Cops Say

NEW YORK – According to the Associated Press, evidence of dogfighting has been showing up throughout New York City suburbs ever since the Michael Vick case gained popularity.

The latest evidence was found over the weekend by a gas station worker in White Plains, just north of Manhattan. The employee discovered two pit bulls in a dumpster behind the establishment. One was dead and another was barely clinging to life. Both animals were severely injured.

Preceding this weekend's findings, six scarred dogs were found in a Yonkers garage in October. Five Rottweilers and a pit bull were found in Mount Vernon two months before that.

Authorities say dogfighting has a close tie to gang activity. Rival gangs get together to fight their dogs, competing for prowess in the neighborhood.

Fortunately, the dog that survived this weekend's abandonment is doing better. But a Westchester County ASPCA official said if the dog was trained for fighting, it may have to be euthanized.

I am not surprised. I used to teach in the Bronx and they had dogfights behind the school. They will continue until they REALLY get punished.

Besides the obvious wrongs of dog fighting, if your a man and you have to live your life or prove your manhood through abusing an animal in any way. Then your a sorry excuse for not just being a human being but more precisely your a sorry excuse for a male. Speaking from a males point of view of course.

I dont know if dog fighting is on the increase or is it a case of it just not being swept under the rug anymore?

I don't know if this is gaining in popularity or if laws are getting more strict. Anyone who would enjoy watching this would be a scary and dangerous person to be around.

This is so disturbing that people believe that dog fighting is a responsible way to determine who is more macho. Even more disturbing that is that it became more popular after the Michael Vick case.

Why should the suburbs of New York City be different than any other area of this country. Dog fighting (and let us not forget cock fighting) is a way of life with far too many people and is a multi million dollar business. The answer here is very very simple--if you are an ignorant moron and you choose to participate in any way/shape/form in animal fighting activities, be it "merely" observing, betting, possessing fighting animals, or you are the ass who provides the "arena"--no matter, if you are a party to such heinous activities you pay the highest fine allowable under the law AND you are charged as a felon and are thrown into jail. No excuses, no exceptions period!

I hope they mean that it's coming up more b/c people are more aware of dogfighting, not b/c people think it's cool to dog fight b/c of dumb Michael Vick.

I hope it isn't increasing because of Vick - I hope people are more aware of it because of the publicity and bringing it to the authorities attention.

We all would like to think it isn't happeneing in WV . Maybe the more news about it gets out people will get scared and stop this kind of cuelty and if the penalties were stiffer.

I don't know how prevalent dog fighting is in my state but we are pretty rural and backward in WVa, so I would expect it exists. But I've lived her more than 40 years and have been involved in humane services through volunteering and Board involvement in our shelter for more than 3 years and so far we have not uncovered any fighting rings. For that matter, I've never heard of any in our area ever....but I just have to believe they exist. Maybe I'm not running around with the wrong crowd enough but wonder how it stays quiet for so long.

You say where are the parents? I say this is a reflection of their parents. I am glad they are catching more and more of these people. I agree, put them in a ring and let them duke it out. It might lower their population and we will hear less about the dog fighting.

I hope the police step up their efforts to find out who is responsible for the dogfighting and are able to stop it. This is so sad to hear that it may be becoming more popular due to the Michael Vick case. I would have hoped the opposite.

The entertainment/gambling "value" of these fighting rings need to be investigated more. The authorities are discovering all the time that there are many more than we realize. How about some nice rewards for the whistle-blowers? Maybe then we can uncover more of this abuse.

Pit bulls are REALLY in the news as of late. I keep asking WHERE ARE THE PARENTS of these kids out torturing animals & belonging to gangs in the first place. Why aren't they being raised differently than this?!

Because the parents weren't raised any different than this either. It is a continuation of the same problems passed from parent to child and on down. Breaking the cycle is the key but how?

get these people in the ring themselves and see how they feel being pushed beyond the limit! and i am glade they are catching all these people! Maybe it will scare some people already in the business and about to be in it to stop what they are doing

I don't understand what people see in watching something like this. If they want to see fighing why don't they just get in the ring and fight each other instead of watching these incident dogs do so. Best thing they could do, is catch all these gang members and neuter everyone of them instead!
