No Tall Tale: World's Tallest Horse Dies

Browse News

NIOTA, Tenn. –- The horse that holds the 2007 Guinness World Record for height has died.

Jim and Marge Williams are waiting for a necropsy report to explain the English Shire’s cause of death.

Four-year old Tina, who measured 80 inches from front hoof to shoulder, was taken by Mr. Williams from their southeastern Tennessee farm to Auburn University nearly 300 miles away in Alabama on March 14.

The horse was to have a minor surgery on her leg, but before the procedure was done, Tina laid down and could not stand again. She died soon after, Williams told The Daily Post-Athenian.

Tina rose to stardom last July when she was officially measured by Guinness for the World Record at 20 hands -- an ancient Egyptian measurement that is about four inches in length.

Now other horse owners are challenging for the record, which is measured from the front hoof to the top of the horse’s shoulder.

The average English Shire lives about 18 years and can grow to be 17 to 19 hands tall.

Tina weighed more than 1600 pounds and could consume 40 pounds of hay, 22 pounds of grain and drank 25 gallons of water a day.

18 doesn't seem even long enough for a horse much less 4. What a tragedy. I guess the fortunate part is that they were at the vet's more a minor surgery so the family doesn't have to wonder what might have happened if they had been at home and unable to get her somewhere. They, at least, were somewhere where they got get help fast.

Wow....that is one big horse. I wonder if the sheer size had something to do with the premature death

With most abnormally large animals or people, there is an underlying "genetic" problem which usually causes an earlier death. I hope they do an autopsy to find the cause of death, which should bring comfort for the family. Shires are beautiful horses, and Tina was no exception!! Shalom

Awww...this is so sad. I feel bad for the Williams family...

Awww. Poor Tina was only 4 years old when she died. I wonder what kind of surgery on her leg she needed? They said it was minor! Poor gal. I hope she had a wonderful life with the Williams! I feel bad for the family who was was willing to drive 300 miles for a minor surgery for her! They must have really care for Tina.

I agree with you. The family must have really cared for him to go 300 miles to get minor surgery on his leg. I feel sorry for the family.

If the average age for that horse if 18 years and this horse was only 4, it must have had something internally that caused it to die at such an early age. As a graduate of Auburn, which has one of the best Vet school in the country, I know they will find out what the cause of death was. Hope we get an update on this.

I feel so bad for the owner. It was an unavoidable death, but if people would have found him sooner, maybe he could have been saved

I work at a horse adoption program and we had a 3 year old Shire gelding come through who was 18 hands at the time. I thought that was tall! He might have grown since but i doubt he's 20 hands... that is awesome.
