Not 101, But a Dalmatian Record: Dog Births 18

Browse News

LONDON -- The litter didn't quite ring in at 101, but 18 puppies is no small feat, either.

Button, a 3-year-old dalmatian who lives in the UK, gave birth to the mammoth litter by Caesarean section on Dec. 23 at the Chine House Veterinary Hospital in Sileby, Leicestershire.

The birth, which British media learned of this week, is a record for dalmatians in the UK, according to the British Dalmatian Club.

"I never heard of any breed of dog giving birth to 18. The real miracle is that they've survived this long because it's so hard to rear that many pups," veterinary surgeon Con Hassett told Sky News.

As a new mother of 18, Button is carrying out a family legacy -- she is the daughter of a dog who starred in the Disney film 102 Dalmatians.

Last year, Button gave birth to a litter of 16 pups.

Though her latest 18-pup litter was the biggest ever delivered at the Chine House Veterinary Hospital, the procedure went smoothly, Hassett told the Times Online.

"I delivered all 18 puppies in about 9 to 12 minutes. The surgery itself is reasonably straightforward, but it's the aftercare that's harder," he said. "We had to have five or six nurses there to revive and tend to the puppies."

Button doesn't have to worry about handling all the pups -- or nursing -- on her own. Her owners, Adam and Nicola Morley, have been stepping in, taking on some of the hand-feeding themselves.

The job requires around-the-clock attention and devotion.

"We feed all of the pups several times a day because Button can't feed them all constantly," Adam Morley said. "We all take it in turns to feed them -- my stint is usually 3 a.m."

Though they had previously handled a comparably large litter, the birth was still "a big shock," to the Morleys, and perhaps Button, as well.

"It's a lot of work looking after them all," Nicola Morley said.

The Morleys intend to keep one of the puppies, which they said they will name Rudolph. Families for the other pups, which are all in good health, have already been arranged, the Morleys said.

The family said they do not plan to breed Button again.

The average dalmatian litter will yield eight or nine puppies. Button's litter is the "biggest" Leicestershire Dalmatian Club representative Paul Hoskins says he has known of.

"I have heard of 14 or 15 puppies and that is reasonably common," he said. "A friend of mine had a litter for 14 not long ago."

According to the BBC, the Guinness World Book of Records counts 24 puppies to one mother as the largest litter. It does not consider different dog breeds, and their specific records.

Button's litter only fails to trump that of Tia, a Neapolitan bull mastiff in England who gave birth to 24 puppies in 2005.

They should have spayed her at the time of the c section if it would not have put her life in danger. I have worked at clinics where is is common.

I like the idea of calling the people pet parents, rather than owners, (as they do in this article). It's better to be members of a family, rather than property.

Amazing! Clearly she is trying to live up to her family legacy of being in 101 dalmations, someone should tell her she doesn't actually have to have that many pups! :-) I hope they all survive and find wonderful homes.

Congratulations, Button. 18 wow!!! 16 wow!!! We know you are fertile, so please do NOT have anymore pups. There are enough innocent dogs being KILLED on a daily basis so your handlers should KNOW better.
You are a sweetheart, Button, you don't need to have anymore babies so people can live off of your pregnancies!!!

I can't believe 18 wow! My dog had 9 and after they were out of the house she got spayed! That is way too much poo and pee to clean up. That's a crazy record. At least it's a pure breed dog that had the puppies and she should be able to find homes for most of them. Hopefully they all go to good homes with experienced owners of that breed though so they don't end up in the shelter.

Please get her spayed as soon as possible. I don't like giving recognition to people that breed animals. The shelters are full of puppies no one wants, & many are purebred. I don't care if she is the daughter of a movie dog, get her spayed, & stop bringing in more animals there are no homes for.

Im happy they aren't breeding her anymore. There are too many homeless animals as it is already. On the other hand I think its amazing that she could have that many puppies.
I hope the new owners of the puppies will get them altered.

I am glad they are not breeding her anymore. Yes it is amazing that she had so many, but it would be even more amazing if those 17 families that got puppies, were from shelters not those that had been bred.

I have mixes feelings about this story, first of all I hope they are not breeding her the second time to win the prize of most puppies in a single litter. I am happy they will not breed her again and let her live the life of a dog and not a breeder whelping pups.

After giving birth to 16 puppies before---why didn't they go ahead and get her spayed? I don't think these people are thinking about the affects on the dog for going through these pregnancies with so many puppies.

I can understand this happening once and then having her fixed so she wouldn't have to suffer through it again, but the fact that she had 14 the previous year and had to be put at risk again is what I condsider to be mistreatmet on her behalf.

All the puppies are spoken for, that is a good breeder. Plus, someone has to bred to AKC standards... Responsible breeding is different thatn backyard breeding.

I agree, I would rather have a 'pound puppy' any day, but if you are person who wants a pure-bred, then find a responsible breeder who is breeding good quality dogs (not puppy-mill dogs). Some folks who are good owners just do not want mutts.
These folks probably made a bit of a financial investment in a good quality dog (we'll assume if Buttons made it into movies, she was representative of breed standards). I have no problem w/ them attempting to breed her a second time. Maybe the first litter of 14 was freakishly large for her, and she could go on to have a couple of litters of 6-7. However she did not.
I'm pleased that they decided not to breed her again, as consistently large litters would be dangerous to mother & pups. However, I think they are doing a good job as folks who are trying to maintain good breed standards and breeding responsibly.

Exactly, really good breeders have a waiting list for dogs! We had a show breed Chow as a kid and my mom was on a waiting list and the dog had a litter of 6 so we got one, but if it was 5, then we had to wait until she or another dog breed again. Our Chow was a show quality dog that we had as a pet. I don't think it was wrong to get a pure breed dog? We spayed her and she was our family pet. My mom wanted a specific dog to protect me as a child. Our Chow was great!!
