Not 101, But a Dalmatian Record: Dog Births 18

Browse News

LONDON -- The litter didn't quite ring in at 101, but 18 puppies is no small feat, either.

Button, a 3-year-old dalmatian who lives in the UK, gave birth to the mammoth litter by Caesarean section on Dec. 23 at the Chine House Veterinary Hospital in Sileby, Leicestershire.

The birth, which British media learned of this week, is a record for dalmatians in the UK, according to the British Dalmatian Club.

"I never heard of any breed of dog giving birth to 18. The real miracle is that they've survived this long because it's so hard to rear that many pups," veterinary surgeon Con Hassett told Sky News.

As a new mother of 18, Button is carrying out a family legacy -- she is the daughter of a dog who starred in the Disney film 102 Dalmatians.

Last year, Button gave birth to a litter of 16 pups.

Though her latest 18-pup litter was the biggest ever delivered at the Chine House Veterinary Hospital, the procedure went smoothly, Hassett told the Times Online.

"I delivered all 18 puppies in about 9 to 12 minutes. The surgery itself is reasonably straightforward, but it's the aftercare that's harder," he said. "We had to have five or six nurses there to revive and tend to the puppies."

Button doesn't have to worry about handling all the pups -- or nursing -- on her own. Her owners, Adam and Nicola Morley, have been stepping in, taking on some of the hand-feeding themselves.

The job requires around-the-clock attention and devotion.

"We feed all of the pups several times a day because Button can't feed them all constantly," Adam Morley said. "We all take it in turns to feed them -- my stint is usually 3 a.m."

Though they had previously handled a comparably large litter, the birth was still "a big shock," to the Morleys, and perhaps Button, as well.

"It's a lot of work looking after them all," Nicola Morley said.

The Morleys intend to keep one of the puppies, which they said they will name Rudolph. Families for the other pups, which are all in good health, have already been arranged, the Morleys said.

The family said they do not plan to breed Button again.

The average dalmatian litter will yield eight or nine puppies. Button's litter is the "biggest" Leicestershire Dalmatian Club representative Paul Hoskins says he has known of.

"I have heard of 14 or 15 puppies and that is reasonably common," he said. "A friend of mine had a litter for 14 not long ago."

According to the BBC, the Guinness World Book of Records counts 24 puppies to one mother as the largest litter. It does not consider different dog breeds, and their specific records.

Button's litter only fails to trump that of Tia, a Neapolitan bull mastiff in England who gave birth to 24 puppies in 2005.

I saw a video of the puppies and they are adorable. But I’m glad that they’re not planning on breeding Button again.

I agree: Spay that dog as soon as possible. Having two litters, one of 16 puppies and one of 18 puppies, in a year is way too hard on an animal.

Wow, that is amazing! I sure hope the Mama dog gets the rest and relaxation she deserves after raising these little ones! I also am hopeful that each of these precious little ones find amazing homes.

I think that having 18 puppies is amazing for a dog but do they think they can find good homes for all the puppies? I sure hope so.

Poor Button must be sore. At least they are done breeding her. I wonder if they will keep a female to continue breeding with. Hope not. It does say they have homes for all of the pups. Some breeders don't breed until they have all the pups sold beforehand. Of course they weren't counting on this many.

i think it's a little ridiculous that they bred Button not once, but twice, with so many puppies. At least they are being responsible and taking very well care of them.

I'm glad that the mom and puppies are doing okay. I do think that the mom should be fixed when she's able to be fixed and not allowed to be bred again.

I guess the 16 the first time wasn't enough incentive to get her fixed. So now we have 18 more that they put that poor dog thru. Unreal.

Its good that the owners have made the decision to spay their dog, because 18 puppies are a lot of puppies to find homes for.

I hope that the owners do have their dog spayed so that she doesn't have another litter after this one. Hopefully all puppies will be able to find homes instead of being placed in shelters.

18 puppies! Yikes!

I'm glad mom and pups are doing well--the owners are seeing to their proper care and yes, a litter over 10 requires round the clock feedings to make sure everyone is getting enough.

I'm also glad they have homes lined up too. It seems like they are responsible people.

Though if my girl whelped 18 puppies I would die, LOL

Well,I wasn't sure if this was a Breeder making money,or a family who just enjoys having puppies once a year.Either way,I wasn't very happy to hear of all the puppies. They did say that they had families all lined up ,so the puppies had a home to go to,so that's good.I just hope that these families realize what is needed to be the owner of a Dalmation.

Are they out for the money? This poor girl has been through enough. You would think that after she had one large litter they would stop breeding her.

I think I read this correctly.....16 last year and 18 this year? Come on....I guess that is 34 in shelters who will die so to speak. Just seems like they are bringing a lot of puppies into the world when so many are euthanized each and every year.

Quite amazing....but I can't be happy about this story. We have so many dogs in our shelters waiting for homes and it makes me sad that some people would rather breed and buy dogs than save those who, by no fault of their own, are in shelters.

Gee I don't think it should be something to be congratulated about when there's so many dying for homes in shelters.
Remember when the new Dalmatian movie came out & all those people just had to have one. They found out they weren't as charmingly obedient as those pre-trained in the movie, nor did they see the many hours it took to get those perfect poses. The shelters were soon over whelmed with dalmatians.
That's the first thing I thought about when I read this.....just my opinion.
