Not 101, But a Dalmatian Record: Dog Births 18

Browse News

LONDON -- The litter didn't quite ring in at 101, but 18 puppies is no small feat, either.

Button, a 3-year-old dalmatian who lives in the UK, gave birth to the mammoth litter by Caesarean section on Dec. 23 at the Chine House Veterinary Hospital in Sileby, Leicestershire.

The birth, which British media learned of this week, is a record for dalmatians in the UK, according to the British Dalmatian Club.

"I never heard of any breed of dog giving birth to 18. The real miracle is that they've survived this long because it's so hard to rear that many pups," veterinary surgeon Con Hassett told Sky News.

As a new mother of 18, Button is carrying out a family legacy -- she is the daughter of a dog who starred in the Disney film 102 Dalmatians.

Last year, Button gave birth to a litter of 16 pups.

Though her latest 18-pup litter was the biggest ever delivered at the Chine House Veterinary Hospital, the procedure went smoothly, Hassett told the Times Online.

"I delivered all 18 puppies in about 9 to 12 minutes. The surgery itself is reasonably straightforward, but it's the aftercare that's harder," he said. "We had to have five or six nurses there to revive and tend to the puppies."

Button doesn't have to worry about handling all the pups -- or nursing -- on her own. Her owners, Adam and Nicola Morley, have been stepping in, taking on some of the hand-feeding themselves.

The job requires around-the-clock attention and devotion.

"We feed all of the pups several times a day because Button can't feed them all constantly," Adam Morley said. "We all take it in turns to feed them -- my stint is usually 3 a.m."

Though they had previously handled a comparably large litter, the birth was still "a big shock," to the Morleys, and perhaps Button, as well.

"It's a lot of work looking after them all," Nicola Morley said.

The Morleys intend to keep one of the puppies, which they said they will name Rudolph. Families for the other pups, which are all in good health, have already been arranged, the Morleys said.

The family said they do not plan to breed Button again.

The average dalmatian litter will yield eight or nine puppies. Button's litter is the "biggest" Leicestershire Dalmatian Club representative Paul Hoskins says he has known of.

"I have heard of 14 or 15 puppies and that is reasonably common," he said. "A friend of mine had a litter for 14 not long ago."

According to the BBC, the Guinness World Book of Records counts 24 puppies to one mother as the largest litter. It does not consider different dog breeds, and their specific records.

Button's litter only fails to trump that of Tia, a Neapolitan bull mastiff in England who gave birth to 24 puppies in 2005.

Buttons and her "kids" are so cute. I'm glad they're being well cared for and will go to good homes. I'm sure Buttons will be happy that she is being "retired" from breeding.

that is so cool but probably really hard on buttons. i am glad they are not breeding her again because that might hurt her. i know one dog that had a litter of 12 and they were to much. she went into depression and she was a coon dog and after the pups she couldnt hunt anymore. she couldnt have pups again after that because her milk things were all messed up.

We call a dog like Buttons "Fertile Myrtle"!

I doubt they used AI for this litter, but I know that this had to be from multiple visits to the stud dog. Its uncanny that one date will make 18 puppies.

I wish the owners the best for their sanity...puppies poop-A LOT.

I don't like the idea of breeding. I prefer hearing about neutering and spaying and adopting strays.

Glad they are done breeding her, major strain on the body of the mother to have a litter much less a litter of that many! I know that Bloodhounds as well as some other breeds are inclined to have large litters.

The owners should start thinking about the health of Buttons and have her spayed. Once dogs start having litters of pups they can become prone to cancer.

MYTH. Total baloney.

I know of plenty of golden retrievers, labs and flat coats that have never been bred and drop dead of cancer. My own dog was never bred-neutered- and developed prostate cancer-hows that for irony?

So no, ANY dog can get cancer...not just ones that are used for breeding.

I hope that the owners are responsible and have the dog spayed when she's able, so that she doesn't have another big litter of pups later on.

We've had two great female Dals with outstanding bloodlines, but we had them fixed because of the usual liter size for the breed. Despite the temptation to have one liter beforehand, we worried about where we would find good homes for eight to ten pups. I can only imagine 18, but I think it is awesome if they all survive and are indeed completely healthy. Kudos to Button, but it's now time to get fixed.

Has there been any indication besides retirement that spaying is in the future for this prolific producer? I would think that would be the first thing to do, especially since they plan on keeping a male pup.

I think that the owners are making a wise decision not to breed their dog anymore after this litter. Its good that they've found homes for the puppies, otherwise some shelter might have been given the task to find homes for them.

I saw that point of others going for the new record by others as soon as I saw the story. Sadly many stories end up with many stillborn, "runts", unwanted puppies.

I would think that after two such large litters that the owners will consider spaying her because they have been treated to the wee hours feedings around the clock for about 12 weeks combined? It isn't always easy to get rid of this large a litter of puppies either. I am however glad to hear that they came into a home that has owners willing to put in the time to care for these tiny babies.

My first reaction was, like some of the other posts, thank goodness they are not going to breed her again. I think she's contributed more than her share to Dalmation lovers in the UK. She's earned a rest!!

I hope they spay Button. Having that many babies can be very stressful and bad for your health. That is good that her owners are also helping with the feeding. I have 2 kids and they are not twins and it is stressful waking up at all different times for feedings. Hope all the babies find good homes. And that is pretty cool that her mom starred in the movie 102 Dalmations!
