Not 101, But a Dalmatian Record: Dog Births 18

Browse News

LONDON -- The litter didn't quite ring in at 101, but 18 puppies is no small feat, either.

Button, a 3-year-old dalmatian who lives in the UK, gave birth to the mammoth litter by Caesarean section on Dec. 23 at the Chine House Veterinary Hospital in Sileby, Leicestershire.

The birth, which British media learned of this week, is a record for dalmatians in the UK, according to the British Dalmatian Club.

"I never heard of any breed of dog giving birth to 18. The real miracle is that they've survived this long because it's so hard to rear that many pups," veterinary surgeon Con Hassett told Sky News.

As a new mother of 18, Button is carrying out a family legacy -- she is the daughter of a dog who starred in the Disney film 102 Dalmatians.

Last year, Button gave birth to a litter of 16 pups.

Though her latest 18-pup litter was the biggest ever delivered at the Chine House Veterinary Hospital, the procedure went smoothly, Hassett told the Times Online.

"I delivered all 18 puppies in about 9 to 12 minutes. The surgery itself is reasonably straightforward, but it's the aftercare that's harder," he said. "We had to have five or six nurses there to revive and tend to the puppies."

Button doesn't have to worry about handling all the pups -- or nursing -- on her own. Her owners, Adam and Nicola Morley, have been stepping in, taking on some of the hand-feeding themselves.

The job requires around-the-clock attention and devotion.

"We feed all of the pups several times a day because Button can't feed them all constantly," Adam Morley said. "We all take it in turns to feed them -- my stint is usually 3 a.m."

Though they had previously handled a comparably large litter, the birth was still "a big shock," to the Morleys, and perhaps Button, as well.

"It's a lot of work looking after them all," Nicola Morley said.

The Morleys intend to keep one of the puppies, which they said they will name Rudolph. Families for the other pups, which are all in good health, have already been arranged, the Morleys said.

The family said they do not plan to breed Button again.

The average dalmatian litter will yield eight or nine puppies. Button's litter is the "biggest" Leicestershire Dalmatian Club representative Paul Hoskins says he has known of.

"I have heard of 14 or 15 puppies and that is reasonably common," he said. "A friend of mine had a litter for 14 not long ago."

According to the BBC, the Guinness World Book of Records counts 24 puppies to one mother as the largest litter. It does not consider different dog breeds, and their specific records.

Button's litter only fails to trump that of Tia, a Neapolitan bull mastiff in England who gave birth to 24 puppies in 2005.

I saw the pups and Buttons on television. They are adorable. The Morleys seem to be quite dedicated to their care and well being. I wish them all well.

I don't believe people have a hatred for all breeders, it's a dislike for the reasons most breeders are breeders, for the money, and the fallout it causes, bringing new life when we can't even save what lives are already here, if your breeding for service dogs, handycaped,rescue,drug/bomb,ect..,that should go without saying, thats a good reason, I can't see any other good reasons too be a breeder, some will say it's because we love that breed, and want to keep that breed's line going, well unless that particular breed is going extinct, that would be a silly reason, there are so many kinds of throwaways, a person could find a pet too fill there needs and save a life in the process.

18 pups! That is a lot to take care of. I do find it interesting that they only go by dogs in general but not breaking it into breeds when they do the world records. Found that interesting.

It's great that they don't plan on breeding her again, but they should really get her spayed in case she ever gets loose!

I saw this on the news last night. You have to read this venison of the story very carefully to learn that it was not a natural birth. The dog had to have a c-section to deliver the puppies

My friend's dal had 15 pups, and I once had a mastiff patient that had 18. Caring for all those pups was very hard work, and I only had to do it for one night. I cannot imagine how exhausting it would be to have to do it for several weeks.

I hope everyone takes time to see this story for what is really about, people making money ,being irresponsible, creating more lives and taking the chance of life away from unwanted animals that are already here, please don't be a contributor too the problem like the Morleys and others like them, spay and neuter

People are either in denial or just don't care to see the true empact of thier actions or what truely happens too these animals and their offspring ect.., I have written three journals on this so far, I hope zootooer's will go too my thoughts and read them, they are short to the point and from the heart, please spay and neuter.

I agree with you but until the public truly , and I mean truly understands and sees for themselves the side effects of not spaying and neutering their animals this will always be a headlines "awww " story. It is too easy to turn off videos and not read an article that may bring ugliness our way.

That is a lot of pups. I'm glad to hear that they are all healthy and have homes to go to. Also, after having 16 and 18 pups, it is good that they are not going to breed her again.

I watched this story on CNN, I think the Morleys are very irresponsible people, I'm sure the UK has the same overwhelming problem as the US does in unwanted pets, Button is known for large litters, shame on them, they say they don't plan on breeding her again, I hope not, they haven't convinced me, they didn't mention this in this article but they are selling the rest of the puppies, most irresponsible people do it for the money, not caring about the bigger picture, for every life we choose to bring into this world, we are dening the unwanted pets that are already here a chance at life its self, so again I say shame.
