Owner's 'Green Paws' Ends Shih Tzu's Sneezes

Browse News

NEW YORK -- After Adam Kroll adopted a hypoallergenic Shih Tzu named Hudson, he was surprised to learn that Hudson had as many allergies as he does.

“I am allergic to everything. I’m actually highly allergic to dogs,” Kroll said of choosing a hypoallergenic pet.

Luckily, Hudson and Kroll are not allergic to each other. But, Hudson started taking medicine daily for his allergies and, to help matters, Kroll started making some changes around the house.

"We never really specifically figured out what he was allergic to but we started removing things and started living a more natural lifestyle around him."

In an effort to live a more chemical-free life, Kroll went on a search for new products to use on Hudson.

Both Hudson and Kroll were frustrated with the hypoallergenic pet products available. Hudson did not respond favorably to anything Kroll brought home and Kroll realized there were no products on the market that were both organic and environmentally friendly.

Kroll saw this hole in the market as an opportunity to develop a line of natural, organic pet products that were also “green.” And, Green Paws was born.

"If we start with a good pure product, let's build around that. Let's not cut corners, let's not look for ways to make things cheaper and let's grow the business organically," Kroll said of his philosophy for Green Paws.

And, that's when Kroll used his professional experience to create the new line to use on Hudson that is both organic and green.

As it turns out, Kroll grew up in the chemical maintenance supply business and used this as a resource to develop shampoos and other products for Hudson.

The first thing he did was remove Sodium Laurel Sulfate from his products.

"These are foaming agents that are in almost everything from hand soaps to your toothpaste to certain things like industrial cleaners and this is also what makes up most shampoos,” Kroll said. "Some people say it can be ‘a harm’ and it dries out the skin and could be making allergies worse."

Green Paws products are not a sure-fire allergy relief remedy, but it is a green option that is also organic and natural.

The products are certified organic. They are biodegradable and made from renewable resources.

"We started this brand with the theory that in order to have a green dog you don't have to change your lifestyle. It's as simple as grabbing one bottle of the shelf versus the other," Kroll said.

As for the true founder of Green Paws, Kroll said “Hudson gets all our sales.”

I think this is a good idea for everyone to start doing. Our Rottie died of cancer earlier this summer. To this day we won't ever know what caused her cancer. We do know that all the cleaning products we had been using contained neurotoxins & carcinogens. Which cause cancer, MS & other neurological diseases and many other problems. We switched to all Shaklee cleaning products because they are all natural, safe for the planet, us, our pets etc. You can actually eat the cleaning products they are made from plants & veggies etc. So you don't have to worry what is under your kitchen sink when you have little ones around. We don't sell Shaklee but definately use it. I don't want to be windexing puppy art off the patio door & be giving my dog cancer by using a chemical cleaner. The Shaklee cleaning products work or I wouldn't use them. They work great & are safe. I think it's important to keep our families safe from chems that we bring into our homes. Protect the planet, pets & families use natural, green renewable products that you know what is in them. I am going to have to check out Green Paws website to see how or where you can purchase the products. Thanks Zootoo for this important article.

I just now emailed a very good friend of mine the link to this story. He owns his own grooming shop & doggie daycare in Portland, OR called The Muttley Crew and he will ONLY use "Green" products on the animals who come to him. Great article, thanks!

wow that is kind of a crazy story. two living things come together who are allergic to everything and end up making a "green" product. its good that he wanted to make his dog more comfortable in the house and i guess it payed off since he is making his own products

Do you have DogFancy magazine? Have you seen some of the Animal Planet dog breed programs? How about the news brief on 'designer dogs' (which I own one) Or even read 'Dogs For Dummies'? They all suggest that there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. They do state that the amount of dander is minimal, BUT they still have dander.

But I'm very gald that your boss likes his Shiba Inu....they are a wonderful breed.

I love that the products are green and organic. It would be nice to know if they were actually helpful. Lola has bad allergies & so far cortisone sprays are the only thing that has been helpful. These products sound like they could be good too. And if anyone knows about fish oil capsules for tiny dogs I'd love to know about them!

Sounds like these two were made for each other! How wonderful that with his background, Adam could funnel his need into manufacturing his own products. How timely, too, when there is a renewed interest in the evironment and going "green"...I use green whenever possible! Good going Adam.

That happens so often, a need turns into a consumer trying to create it him/herself, and then bam, you have your own company.... that is awesome! I say good for him! Our pets need just as healthy food as we do!

What a good pair they are, the owner would sympathize with the dogs allergies knowing what it is like to have allergies and how you feel with them. He's doing some great work, there are a lot of dogs out there with allergies.

I think that's GREAT! Using his experience and hard work to help others with the similar situation...WONDERFUL! I may get a backlash from this BUT, I hate to tell him there is no TRULY hypoallergenic pet...they all have dander, some just have less than others. This 'idea' that people are spreading about some of these breeds and designer breeds being hypoallergenic is a CROCK. Although I'm very glad he can have his dog and they coincide, I think he was deceived just a smidge about the whole hypoallergenic thing. NEVERTHELESS, I'm glad that he and his furry pal are able to live a happy and healthy life, thanks to his new product....

Actually, there are several dog breeds and other animals who don't have the dander that causes allergies. They still shed their fur, but that's not what their owners are allergic to. I recommended a Shiba Inu to my boss, who has kids that wanted a dog but is allergic to everything under the sun. He got one shortly after, and the whole family loves her, and he's had no problems with his dog allergies. Dalmations also have no dander, and, if you're into more exotics, Chinchillas.

So many animals seem to suffer from some sort of allergies these days, and I think his way,"Organic and green" sounds wonderful.
I don't think people would mind paying the higher prices,if it saved their animals from numerous "failed" products and lots of money wasted trying to find "fixes".
