Owner's 'Green Paws' Ends Shih Tzu's Sneezes

Browse News

NEW YORK -- After Adam Kroll adopted a hypoallergenic Shih Tzu named Hudson, he was surprised to learn that Hudson had as many allergies as he does.

“I am allergic to everything. I’m actually highly allergic to dogs,” Kroll said of choosing a hypoallergenic pet.

Luckily, Hudson and Kroll are not allergic to each other. But, Hudson started taking medicine daily for his allergies and, to help matters, Kroll started making some changes around the house.

"We never really specifically figured out what he was allergic to but we started removing things and started living a more natural lifestyle around him."

In an effort to live a more chemical-free life, Kroll went on a search for new products to use on Hudson.

Both Hudson and Kroll were frustrated with the hypoallergenic pet products available. Hudson did not respond favorably to anything Kroll brought home and Kroll realized there were no products on the market that were both organic and environmentally friendly.

Kroll saw this hole in the market as an opportunity to develop a line of natural, organic pet products that were also “green.” And, Green Paws was born.

"If we start with a good pure product, let's build around that. Let's not cut corners, let's not look for ways to make things cheaper and let's grow the business organically," Kroll said of his philosophy for Green Paws.

And, that's when Kroll used his professional experience to create the new line to use on Hudson that is both organic and green.

As it turns out, Kroll grew up in the chemical maintenance supply business and used this as a resource to develop shampoos and other products for Hudson.

The first thing he did was remove Sodium Laurel Sulfate from his products.

"These are foaming agents that are in almost everything from hand soaps to your toothpaste to certain things like industrial cleaners and this is also what makes up most shampoos,” Kroll said. "Some people say it can be ‘a harm’ and it dries out the skin and could be making allergies worse."

Green Paws products are not a sure-fire allergy relief remedy, but it is a green option that is also organic and natural.

The products are certified organic. They are biodegradable and made from renewable resources.

"We started this brand with the theory that in order to have a green dog you don't have to change your lifestyle. It's as simple as grabbing one bottle of the shelf versus the other," Kroll said.

As for the true founder of Green Paws, Kroll said “Hudson gets all our sales.”

It is funny that some pet owners go to extraordinary lengths for their pet's comfort, while so many others are abused. Kudos to Kroll- green is good!

Lots of products that have been developed to make our lives better seem to have the opposite effect. Glad to see a movement that eases the discomfort of both animals and humans.

I never really thought about pet allergies until we had a cat with food allergies. She was miserable until we got her switched to a different food.

Sodium Laurel Sulfate should only be used in products to clean your floor. I can't have this in any products I use. It is harsh and very irritating. I wouldn't use a product on my pet if this is in it.

I was with him until it ended saying the dog gets all the sales. Just struck a wrong note--I was expecting something like he was donating a portion to a shelter. This just says he's keeping it all for himself, which is fine, just don't try to dress it up by saying the proceeds are going to your dog.

I'm happy to hear about more green/organic products. But, I do have to wonder why they are always so much more expensive than traditional products. So many of the greener products I buy I have found much cheaper home-made recipes for.

I wonder!

My cat has asthma. I need to look into using more green products. I try to do that anyway but could be more diligent. I've already installed several air filters and that is helping in significant manner. Thanks for making me think more about this.

Necessity is the mother of invention. I wish I had the smarts to come up with something like this. Organics and natural products will be more and more popular if there continue to be all the pet food recalls.

Makes perfect sense organic and green has to be better than chemicals. I am encouraged to see that even the big commercial producers of products for the home (for example Clorox) are coming out with "green" products.

These products sound great. We should use "green" products for our pets and ourselves whenever possible. I know most things we use are full of chemicals, some of which have the potential to do harm. I try to keep my use of them down, but I never thought about what made things foam, now I know about Sodium Laurel Sulfate.

Thats wonderful! I love when pet owners step up and really try their best to make a difference in their pets lives. Some people see a problem in their pet and just give them away instead of trying to help them. And, the more "green" products out there, the better. Better for the earth and better for the health of us humans and our pets.

This sounds like a great product. However, as someone with allergies I have to clear the record. Shih Tzu's are not hypoallergenic! No breed of dog is, it is simply a gimic used by pet stores to sell puppies. People aren't so much allergic to hair as they are to dander and saliva. All dogs have both, some have less dander than others which can help, and they are still capable of producing an allergic reaction regardless of breed.

Sometimes lately I have felt a bit burnt out by all the organic and green talk, like the way I have been trying to live is a national phase or something. On the other hand, it can't be bad for people to try to be more environmentally friendly, and organic pet products are better for the pets.
