For dogs who are in the back yard or blocked off area in the house, that's a fantastic idea! I don't know if it would work on walks when the dog sees a rabit, deer or another dog it wants to go check out. I'd be scared my dog would break away when it shouldn't.

This sounds like a great product. I have used the Premier Breakaway collar on all my dogs. Years ago we had two rowdy puppies and one pup's adjustable collar was accidently pulled too tight by the other pup. If I hadn't been right there, the puppy would have strangled to death. Since then, only breakaways for my dogs. This new stretch collar sounds like a great alternative.

I used to have a collar with elastic for our killer cat. I wonder if an expandable dog collar would be safe if the dog tried to back out of it. My dog has a very thick furry ruff - I wonder if it would be safe for her

There is always room for good ideas. How easy is it for the dog to slip out on an average walk though if he is pulling hard?

I could see a large, strong dog being able to get out of it. Too bad there wasn't a video demonstrating how it works.

Good idea - just hope it stays on the dogs.... just came back from a petstore where a dog got hit by a car - it (I don't know if it was a female or male dog) - the owner had one a martingdale collar on the dog and it got out of it and started running around the parking lot? A Car hit it - I ran to the dog and the owner and wrapped the dogs leg in a bandage - she immediatelt went inside to see the Vet Group there? I think I will stay with the harness I use on Nico?

scarey story. you must have been pretty upset.
I am surprised the dog backed out of the martindale. Cricket has always worn one along with her buckle collar, because she has a full furry ruff, and she can back out of the buckle collar, but never her martindale.

I thought it was a martingale? I was scared - but I was at my car and Nico was inside and I got my first aid kit and was wrapping the leg when a person from the Vet clinic came out - they got a cart and put the dog into it and took him inside. I use a harness on Nico - it works so I won't play with fire.....

I opted for a colllar with a stretch section to fit my hunter cat with a bell to warn the barkyard birds of his presence. Somehow he always manages to get it off. Perhaps the collars discussed in the article have a better design.

This is a great idea. I've had a dog get its jaw stuck under another dogs collar which twisted the collar. Fortunately there was a human and a pair of scissors near by to cut the collar off. I also worry about leaving a collar on in a dog crate. What if the collar gets caught on something while I'm gone?
I just wonder how they keep the dog from slipping its collar.

Many times if a dog is hung, it's not a training issue but a genuine accident. A dog playing in his own well fenced yard or kennel could get caught on something and choke to death. Usually I'm all about more training, but in this case I think a product to combat this issue is definitely warranted.

Or why does a dog even need to wear a collar when he/she is playing in his/her own yard?

Because while we can account for our own actions and sometimes even that of our pets, we live in a world with other people. :) The UPS man might come and open the gate on his way to the door, or the neighborhood kid might try to pet the dog and let it out by accident, etc etc. I for one would want my roaming dog to have his tags!

I too wonder how it would work with dogs on a leash while walking. I think the idea is great in some aspects (just like the break away collars for cats), but would be afraid to walk my dogs if they were wearing these. What if a rabbit or squirrel ran and caught their eye? I'd be afraid they'd get loose.

Doesn't that mean the dog could get out of his collar when you don't want him to? We wouldn't want more strays walking around.

Interesting idea, but it wouldn't be necessary if people wouldn't leave their dogs unattended outside - that's when they actually get into dangerous situations.

Sounds great. I worried about this too, so whem my dog is out in the fenced yard, he wears only an adjustable nylon collar. I keep it loose enough that he can slip out of it if necessary. When outside the yard or house, he wears a choke chain. But he is never alone with it.

sounds like a good idea, but how will it hold up if you have a good sized dog that is very strong, you have it on a leash like you are supposed to, and it sees something it wants to chase or attack (heaven forbid) and it jerks and pulls very hard? Will the collar release and let the dog get free, or will it hold, needing to be pulled from a certain angle to be able to release?

I think this is a great idea. I would buy one even though my dog is always outside with someone. What if you are on the other side of the yard and your dog gets stuck it is normal for a dog to fight it and they could hurt themselves in the few seconds it takes for you to get there and unclip their collar.
