‘Nice’ Pit Bull Used as Weapon in Robbery

Browse News

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A pit bull is in the custody of St. Paul Animal Control Services after police arrested a man that used the dog as a weapon during a robbery.

Police cannot divulge exactly how the incident occurred because the investigation is ongoing. But the unnamed victim was robbed by Bill Gean Garrett, who used his dog, Cane, as a threatening tool.

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning in a Wendy’s parking lot in St. Paul.

Garrett was tracked down soon after. He was taken into police custody and Cane is now in the care of St. Paul Animal Control.

According to St. Paul Police Spokesman Tom Walsh, use of an animal as a weapon is rare.

“That’s pretty frequent that dogs are used to protect territory of turf,” he said. “This is the first time that I can recall a pit bull was used to intimidate somebody to create fear and to cause them to give up their money.”

Authorities could not reveal whether or not Cane actually attacked the victim. They cannot release any photos of the dog, either.

When asked how a dog could be used as a weapon, St. Paul Animal Control Supervisor Bill Stephenson said it’s a grey area.

“If you’re using it as that,” he said. “You know, sick ’em, or (the criminal) ordered the dog to attack or the dog does attack, it could be considered as a weapon.”

But Stephenson had only positive things to say about Cane.

“This one’s nice; it seems to be a very nice, people friendly dog,” said Stephenson. “He will get two or three meals a day and he’ll be under our control for awhile until we get clearance from the police department.

Minnesota law requires a stray dog to be held for no less than five days before it is put down. Stephenson said since Cane is considered evidence in the case, he is exempt from that rule.

However, once the case is closed, he thinks Cane should have an easy time getting adopted.

According to Walsh, Garrett has a long criminal history, but he won't be regaining custody of Cane.

To find out how to adopt Cane, contact the St. Paul Animal Control Services offices at (651) 266-1100.

Yet another stupid crook. Geez, the world is full of them. But most of all, I agree with Pia. Shame on you, Pet Pulse, for perpetuating the stereotype that pits aren't typically nice.

Why is this world populated by so many idiots? And why do these idiots pick such a great breed of dog to ruin?

Didn't help pit's reputation.

I bet the dog was just standing there wagging its tail and the dude still just gave up his money. People are so afraid of a breed they can't even read friendly signs in them.

Pits have enough of an image problem without bozos like this using them as a "weapon" in a robbery. I'm glad Cane is safe now and will hopefully be adopted soon.

Cane is lucky to be away from his previous owner. He will be loved and better treated with a family that won't use him for intimidation or status.

Sorry Pet Pulse, but I do take offense to the title. 'Nice' Pitbull... It sort of insinuates that Pitbulls aren't typically 'nice.'

Exactly, so if it were a 'mean' Pit that would be acceptable?

I am glad he is not getting that dog back. He shouldn't be allowed to own another dog for a really long time, if ever.

The only reason the criminal was able to use the Pit as a threat is because of the misconceptions about the breed that has been perpetrated by the media. If people knew what this breed is really about, the person being threatened would have laughed uncontrollably. I would love to have someone threaten me with a Pit. I’d go over an pet it and let it like my face.

This belongs under the category of “Stupid Criminal Stories.”

It's people like this that make it hard for people who want to own a nice, tame pittbull as a pet! I have never had one but the one's I've met were always nice, family-type dogs. When dogs like that are aggressive, its usually a reflection on how the owner has trained/allowed them to behave.

Poor dog, Pitts are so nice, it's great to hear that this one, even after being raised by an aggressive criminal, is nice.

Sounds like the dog will be given a chance at adoption. This is why these poor dogs get such a bad reputation. I hope he is taken by someone skilled with the breed and can rehab him from what was probably a very bad situation.

People that do these kinds of things are why pit bulls are so feared. I hope this dog gets adopted into a home that treats it the way it should be...like a family companion not a weapon.

I'm glad that this article mentions that this pitbull is very friendly and should be able to be adopted. Pits may look intimidating, but they are an amazingly sweet breed if the right people own them. I own two and can't imagine life without pits!

What an idiot. Use a subconscious fear that many people have in order to rob someone. Thats horrible. I am so happy that they went on the record and said it seems like a good nice dog.

It is unfortunate that the owner used his dog this way and as a result, this dog ends up in animal control. It is nice that the dog is nice and will probably get a second chance with some loving owners.

Well I am sure that because of this story Cane will be adopted. I'm glad that a dog used for malicious purposes may have a chance of having a happy home and normal life..
A pit bull can intimidate some people ..I'm glad that Cane has only a "tough" exterior.

The pit bull will get the bad rap because of the person. What's new. When will people realize, it is people who make animals bad - luckily, this guy didn't have enough time to complete it. Hope this dog gets a good home, and the man gets animal cruelty charges, as well as attempted robbery.
