NEWSBRIEFS on the Animal Kingdom At-Large

Browse News

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- This week, news in the animal kingdom abounded. Below is a nutshell of three separate news events.

HUNDREDS OF MIGRATING DUCKS DIE IN CANADIAN OIL SAND. A flock of about 500 migrating mallards landed on a partially frozen pond filled with toxic waste, leading to all but five ducks dying, a Canadian official said on Wednesday.

The government is now investigating the oil sands company Syncrude Canada Ltd. in Alberta as to why the company failed to act faster to deploy its water cannons -- which deter the water fowl from landing there. An official said if there was negligence, prosecution would follow.

MONKEY GETS ARTIFICIAL LENSES. A howler monkey at the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City underwent eye surgery on Monday. Named Eli, the 10-year old monkey had cataracts removed and had his natural lenses replaced with acrylic one -- usually intended for children.

The lenses were donated by Texas-based Alcon Surgical and should last for the rest of primate’s life. The zoo’s veterinarian said that within an hour of Eli’s surgery he was “running around and acting like he can see.”

SOUTH AFRICA LIFTS 13-YEAR BAN ON ELEPHANT KILLING. On Thursday, South African officials lifted the 13-year ban of culling elephants, as the herd population has been growing more than five percent each year. The reversal has conservationists concerned that the move would lead to the return of the international trade in ivory.

But officials want to keep a lid on their burgeoning numbers to protect their viability as the animals have no natural predator and can strip vegetation to barren land in a couple years.

South Africa is home to 18,000 elephants, while the southern Africa region has about 300,000 elephants, which is roughly half of the continent’s population. There is no consensus on how to manage elephant populations among the Africa’s various countries’ governments.

Oil companies don't really doa g ood job with social responsibility towards the environment. sadly - that story does not suprise me.

Cool that the moneky can see now.

And don't farmers in Africa as well as illegal traders kill enough elephants already? I find it hard to believe that the government has to sanction the killing of these familial and intelligent animals. That is so horrible. It is people who keep encrouching on the animals land.

That is so sad about the ducks. There is so much carelessness towards the environment and animals. I am also very sorry to hear about the elephants. I understand that they deplete a lot of vegetation, but it is not their fault. It is due to the population explosion and waste of natural resources. Now the situation is going to go the other way again, them becoming endangered. It's good that there is some good news about the monkey.

Shame on Syncrude Canada Ltd & South Africa for allowing harm to come to the animals. Kudos to Alcon for donating the lenses... maybe they do more for other animals who have lost their sight due to cataracts.

How can you lift a ban on elephant killing!?!?! They are endangered and need to be protected!! What in the world is wrong with people????? I just don't understand it, people need to be educated. As for the ducks, that is just horrible, I hate people who just don't care about the environment, don't they realize it effects them too in the long run????? At least the monkey is a good story....

That's awful! Elephants should not be killed just because of the way they look! (Ivory) oil company should definatly get in trouble, because they didn't want to "waste money" tons of innocent ducks lost their lives.

Sad for the ducks because of carelessness. Happy for the monkey that he will be better. Don't believe in killing elephants; isn't there a better way to control the population?

I hate that animals have to suffer for mistakes that humans do. Ducks maybe messy but they are beautiful creatures. As for the monkey I'm glad that he made it out of surgery and can see again. As for elephants I love all creatures but this is an animal that has had hard times. They are amazing creatures I understand where the people are coming from but I can't stand to see any animal killed.

Ducks - horrible. They created the toxic mess and let the ducks drown in the muck. How could this not be negligence?
Monkey - glad he can see again with the simple surgery
elephants - hate to see them killed but I understand how destructive they can be to vegetation. Hope it doesn't get out of control again

If you make a mistake you fix it! what are they doing about it?

Very sad for the ducks. The company should be held responsible. Glad the monkey can see again. I'd think this process would be cost-prohibitive, but it's nice that they have the technology to do it. As for the elephants, I hope this doesn't start a mass culling of the populations. I'd like to keep posted on the subject.

Well said!

That company should be held responsible, there must be some kind of alarm system if they have water cannons to keep the birds away in the first place.
I'm glad to see medical progress of any kind in the animal kingdom.
I wonder if there's any such thing as spay/neuter of an elephant???
Wow what a diverse news article.

Lots of things are certainly happening. I would be interested in hearing what the outcome is of the investigation of the oil sands. The primate should have merited a story of its own - I know that here in Columbus, Ohio there is an veterinarian opthamoligist who does cataract surgery on dogs so a more indepth artcile would be very interesting.

and the elephants - just very sad. People hae worked very hard to get their numbers up and now they are going to do this. Elephants are very social animals and this will devestating to them. Is there no way to apply pressure to stop this?

I am finding myself being depressed today. I have been thinking about animals that have to be put down at the shelter because there is no room for them. So I am especially sensitive to the plight of all creatures today. The ducks, I really wish mankind could be kinder. The elephants, why do we have to kill animals just because there are suddently more of them. There use to be lots of deer in my neighborhood when I first moved here and now I hardly ever see any. We just keep building and bulding and driving the animals out. It is so cruel!. After all, they were here first.

I don't mean to be rude or anything...

but has anyone tried to put a condom on an elephant?

(i don't know why i thought that was funny, just watched a show where they did that...wierd.)

that's really sad though, i agree, why can't they find some other way to control the population?
...and why DID they have a pond full of sewage?

But I am happy for the monkey : )

That is sad. Companys realy need to stop doing that.Who knows what could happen next time if they do that mabey some poor thing could go exstincet. The oil companys should get sewed for it and or have to move to some place were the ponds, rivers, lakes and or oceans are near them so that won't happen again and they won't cause any real damage.

I will be watching for an update on the story about the ducks.
I hope that the hunting plan is shot down and replaced with some sort of birth control relocation program.
The monkey made me jealous. His surgery went better than mine.

The oil companies have always been a problem with the birds, think of the spill in Alaska! I'll bet they're still cleaning up. Make them pay they sure makin a bundle on us so they can afford it.

Glad the monkey can se and seems to be enjoying it.

When restrictions are lifted the population goes down, sorry but I feel the elephants will be hunted as mentioned for their ivory.

1. The oil companies should have to pay a very big fine to help other migrating birds

2. I am so happy for the monkey!!

3. I hope Africa puts restrictions on killing the elephants so people are not dropping them and leaving them everywhere.

The oil company should be held responsible!
Culling is always the answer they choose because it is the easiest and cheapest and heck they may even make some money. God forbid they think a little bit and have enough respect for life to choose a different option. Birth control maybe? May be more expensive and harder to pull off, but aren't their lives worth it??

About the ducks- the company should be punished- how awful that the ducks died.
About the elephants- it should be outlawed to kill an elephant- they are such loving and caring creatures and to kill them for ivory is horrible. What an awful idea.

These were very interesting, disturbing, and the case of the ape, heartwarming. Through science people have helped an animal restore his vision.

I can understand why lifting the band on killing the elephants in South Africa might be necessary especially if the people there will use the elephant for a food source. You see pictures of people in Africa starving and malnourished children and it just breaks your heart, I sure wouldn't want an elephant trampling through my garden.

Sounds like the animal kingdom has had one crazy time! I can also agree with Betty about the oil companies. They really need some kind of penalty for this. They know what they're doing is WRONG AND ILLEGAL AND NEED TO STAND UP AND TAKE THE CONSEQUENCES THEY BROUGHT ON THEMSELVES. That's just ridiculous. Glad that the monkeys are getting a new view on life and are able to see with the help of this advancment. Hopefully they will make a law about the elephants and stick to it! Preferably the law that states they shouldn't be hunted. I realize they're growing, but do they really need to lift their protection in order to solve the issue?

I hope they figure out why those ducks were allowed to land there. I don't think lifting the ban on the elephants is a good idea. I'm happy the monkey can see again.
