SECAUCUS, N.J. – Below is a look at some noteworthy stories from the animal kingdom this week.
WORLD’S OLDEST GORILLA TURNS 55. What does a gorilla get to celebrate her 55th birthday? The wisecrack answer would be, “Anything she wants.”
Actually, Jenny, the world’s oldest gorilla, celebrated her big day with a four-layer frozen fruit cake and banana leaf wrapped treats at her wooded home in the Dallas Zoo.
“It’s a special milestone for us,” said Todd Bowsher, one of the zoo’s curators. “It signifies that we’ve made great strides in veterinary care, nutrition and animal husbandry.”
Gorillas in the wild normally live to age 30 or 35, according to Kristen Lukas, a curator at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in Ohio.
RARE IGUANAS VIOLENTLY KILLED. Among the most imperiled creatures on earth, a half-dozen giant blue iguanas were found scattered across a breeding park in the Cayman Islands, after apparently being stomped and gouged, according to officials in the British dependency.
“It’s ugly and deeply shocking,” said Fred Burton, director of the Blue Iguana Recovery Program, which has brought the rare reptiles back from the brink of extinction.
SEA LIONS SHOT DEAD. Six sea lions were shot and killed by a gunman last weekend as they lay in traps meant to humanely catch them.
The federally protected sea creatures appear to have been shot by somebody on the Washington side of the Bonneville Dam, according to Brian Gorman, spokesman for the National Marine Fisheries Service.

I so hope they find the people responsible for the killings of the sea lions and iguanas and throw them in jail and then throw away the key.

This link has some more clear cut info on the deaths of the sea lions. Once again some human has taken it upon themselves to commit an atrocious act against another species. People really sicken me - I guess there isn't anything more clear cut that I could say on that matter. I hope these people are caught swiftly and justice for the sea lions is swift.

To think that someone , some person , some "people" ( I say that very sarcastically) would harm them in this way is mind boggling. People who do not appreciate the lives of animals, reptiles, avians simply do not appreciate life at its best. To take those lives in such a cruel, vicious way speaks to their mindset - or lack thereof. I hope they are found quickly and prosecuted accordingly.

one of my favorite Gorillas - Koko - will turn 37 on July 4th of this year - I am sure you all know that Koko is able to use American sign language and has been the proud owner of kittens :) All Ball was her first kitty - she chose him herself from a litter of abandoned kittens. I hope that Jenny has had many animal friends to share her life & birthday with too:)

As for the Iguanas and Sea Lions, it make me sick that people can be so heartless and mean. I hope they find out who did that to them. No animal should have to suffer at the hands of a horrible human.
