New Home Sought for Monkeys

Browse News

DENVER – The Denver Municipal Animal Shelter recently acquired six exotic guests. But the animals cannot be legally kept as pets in the state, and no one seems to know what to do with them.

Shelter Director Doug Kelley said he and the former owner of six Marmoset monkeys are working to find a sanctuary that will house the animals.

“We’re just going to have to figure out where they can go and what’s the best situation for them,” said Kelley.

The animals’ former owner moved to Colorado about a year ago from Florida, where owning the monkeys is legal.

However, in the Centennial State, it is not. Someone reportedly saw the exotic pets, called animal control and that’s how they ended up here.

“Seems as if someone worked with them, they seem fairly tame,” he said.

The owner has been cited for breaking state law, by the way Colorado is one of 19 U.S. states that have outlawed owning monkeys as pets.

“These animals will not be available for adoption,” said Kelley.

There is at least one exception to that law, in Colorado, anyway.

“The only exception, as I understand it, you can have a Capuchin monkey if it’s trained as a service animal,” said Kelley. “The message is; these (marmosets) are not the best pets.”

The owner has provided food for the Marmosets, and a sanctuary in Hawaii is being considered for their future home. A call to that sanctuary could not confirm the monkeys' future. However, because these animals are not pets, a sanctuary is likely the best place for them.

This type of monkey is native to South America. They grow to about eight inches long and are considered primitive as far as monkeys go.

This is our government at work. All 6 Marmosets were well cared for, and as the article states "are fairly tame." I am sure they were very tame with their owner of whom they were bonded to. If the government would enact fair regulations instead of bans these marmosets would still be with their caring owner. This is a perfect example of exotics being forced out of their owners homes for no reason. Then sanctuaries say they are full of monkeys because people give them up. As this article proves NOT ALL MONKEYS ARE GIVEN UP. MANY are forced out of their owners homes simply because they became illegal. In the US it is ILLEGAL to import a primate for the pet sector (since 1975). If a person wants to dedicate their life to caring for a captive bred anything, so long as the animal is humanely cared for, then they should have the right to. That is why we live in the UNITED STATES. FREEDOM.

I hope they find these animals a home, it's a shame the owner moved without checking the laws on exotic pets for thier new homes

This story has a lot of facets, it is not just a simple story of six homeless monkeys. I am sure that the six Marmosets will eventually find a home or homes in sanctuaries. Thankfully there is no talk of "putting them down". One has to wonder why their owner didn't do his homework and find out before he moved from Florida to Colorado that it was illegal to own monkeys in that state? Why did some sob alert animal control to the fact that somebody was keeping illegal animals? And most importantly why are monkeys native to South America being sold in the U.S.???Exotic animals belong in their own habitat--PERIOD!

Post them on a pet adoption site so that others can be aware of their plight. Make sure that the adopter is from an area that allows these monkeys as pets prior to adopting them out.

It seems like that would be a big climate for the monkeys to move to Colorado. And you would think the owner would be educate on what is best for the animal. But for my knowledge - where would the law be posted about what animals you cannot have or who do you call.

This is again a case of it takes all kinds to make th eworld go round. I would say that while living in Flordia that the monkeys had a great life. And granted I would say that they still had a good life after the move. In this case I would say that it will be harder on the monkeys when they have to leave the only person they have ever known. After all they say that the monkey is much like the human.

I think we are making a mistake by keeping all of these types of animals as pets. I went to our state fair not long ago and a man had baby "cats" there. I am not sure what they are thinking - this guys motivation was obviously to make money - wonder what he did with them when they "got big."

I'm sure people who buy exotic pets knowingly buy them illegally. Law Enforcement with the help of the animal rescue group (Humane Society?) need to go after the dealers

Anyone that owns an exotic pet should check laws before moving. I don't approve of keeping these types of animals. But that is my opinion. If this owner was taking good care of them and no harm was done then he was within his rights in Florida. He should have looked at the laws before moving. Then maybe these primates would not be displaced now. I hope that Hawaii will take them and give them a life of freedom.

I believe this owner was in a no win situation. He was legally allowed to keep the monkeys until he moved. Was he aware of the laws governing that state?? He made an effort to keep his pets! You can't tell me that there is no one who has kept a cat in an apartment that didn't allow pets. Yes, they are different circumstances, but yet they are not. Its still about the concern for your beloved pet. I do not fault him because his intentions were just.

wild animals may be good pets but can get out of control.

Wild animals do not make good pets. They have special needs. They need special vet care. I hope Hawaii takes these guys, it will probably be the first time they touched grass or trees.

Its to bad the owner didn't do some research before moving to another state especially with such unusual pets. Why not just move back to Florida if he wants custody of these animals. If he has care well for these animals I don't see the issue of continued care just move to where they are allowed by law.
No monkeys aren't my kind of pet but until laws are passed in all 50 states they must be allowed. I also wouldn't have a pet snake, spider or rat but there are many happy owners of these kinds of pets and more so who am I to say otherwise. I don't think animals like tigers, lions and alligators should be allowed just because they are inherently dangerous and become a public hazard when in the care of untrained individuals. I honestly think they belong in the wild and hope we don't become overrun with exotic pets but it seems as long as there is a market out there for this kind of animal we will always have these kinds of problems.

Another idiot responsible for problems with exotics. I hope Hawaii takes these poor monkeys, it's not their fault. I wish people would learn to either take domesticated animals or forget the whole thing. Exotics are always a problem because they're just not good pets.

I just have a really very difficult time justifying taking an animal out of the wild and trying to keep it as a pet. They never, ever get the kind of activity they need, and nine out of the times they have to be given up anyway.
This country really should have more stricter standards on just what animals are allowed to be kept as pets. I really hope these poor things get to go to a sanctuary that will put them back into as natural environment as was intended for them. I just hope they were "too humanized" to be able to socialize with others, as primates are extremely social animals and need other primates around.

If you have a hard time justifying taking an animal out of the wild to keep as a pet then you better let those dogs go, where do you think they came from ?? There are more bites per year from dogs & cats than from privately owned monkeys !! Do the research !! It amazes me how people think they are justified in telling others how they should live their life & what type of animal they should be allowed to keep as a companion !!

I wish all exotic animals could live in their natural habitat and be happy, perhaps the day will come when the homo sapiens society will find the stone of wisdom and no longer put those animals in cages.

Hope they find a sanctuary because they can't be released back into the wild once they learn to rely on humans. I really wish it would be against the law in all states to have exotic animals as pets.

At the end of the day, I hope the monkeys find a proper home. There is a chance that owner knew the law, didn't want to part with his/her beloved pets & decided to take chance that no one would find out.

The old owner should have done their homework and found out if the monkeys would be legal to own in their new state! Then finding out that they weren't they could have made arrangements in Florida. Now they will probably end up in a Zoo because even if someone was willing to adopt them they can't legally.

I'll never understand why people feel a need to have an exotic animal as a pet. Then when they can't have it anymore, it becomes somebody else's problem. Leave them in their natural habitat where they belong. If people would stop buying them, there wouldn't be a high demand for them

It never ceases to amaze me what people will do and how their thinking seems to be on some level other than the planet earth. I have nothing positive to say about people whose thought process appears to be out of focus. We have so many homeless cats and dogs and yet certain members of our society need to possess an animal which is not appropiate in a household setting.
