Nearly 200 Domestic, Farm Animals Rescued

Browse News

APACHE JUNCTION, AZ – Responding to a tip, Arizona police found 185 animals being kept in abusive conditions.

Unlike typical hoarding cases, this involved seven different species and various breeds being rescued from a rural property near Apache Junction.

Authorities found 96 rabbits, 47 dogs, chickens, pigs, goats, horses, an African gray parrot and a cockatiel.

Commander Jay Swart of the Apache Junction Police Department said some of the animals were in pretty significant distress.

As of right now, none of the rescues are available for adoption. While some of the animals are still being evaluated, two have been euthanized. It is possible that one horse will also be put down.

A search warrant was served by police to the owners, who watched the animals being taken away. They declined to comment and the police did not identify them.

The police department’s forensic team is collecting evidence. Once the investigation is complete, the department will review the case with the county attorney. Depending on the findings, the owners could face animal abuse charges.

I'm just amazed when I hear of these things how it could happen and why people let it happen. It seems they could see it is getting out of control. Is it they don't care or ignorance?

Its so sad when you hear news like this. Why o Why do people do this?? Do they think, in their own way that they are helping the animals???

We had a case, recently, in Berkshire where there were 80 horses and donkeys living in one barn, a few were corpses, the animals had no food or water. I think these people who do these unseakable things should be hung - if it were humans instead of animals they would be locked up and the key thrown away!

This was an animal collector and a person who should not have animals. I hope most of them can find loving homes and be free from abuse.

People are crazy! If you can't take care of your animals you take them to a shelter that can.

I'm glad the authorities were able to take all the animals. Many states' laws allow animals to stay with the owners for some time, even if there are obvious signs of neglect or abuse. The laws consider animals property and reflect the right to retain possession of property, rather than considering animal needs.

So many times these situations begin when a person tries to do good but then gets overwhelmed. They can't say no to helping more animals and quickly lose the ability to care for all of them. I'd like to think that's what happened in this situation and not that the animals were intentionally mistreated.

why do people get animals, if they know they can't take care of them? thats' just wrong! why do the animal police allow people to get all the way to that point? i hope all, or most animals are able to go up for adoption.

How are people allowed to get to this point? I guess until we license every animal, this will never change. At least the licensing process makes people aware that you have an animal.
