Navy SEAL Chases Men Who Killed His Dog

Browse News

NEW YORK -- As if saying goodbye to his three Navy SEAL teammates wasn't enough, veteran Marcus Luttrell has now lost his dog Dasy, too.

The yellow Labrador was shot dead on Luttrell's Huntsville, Texas, property on April 1.

The killing resulted in a high-speed car case, as Luttrell hounded the accused killers through four different counties before two of the men were arrested with charges of cruelty to a non-livestock animal.

Dasy wasn't just any household pet -- she was given to Luttrell following his return to the United States in 2006 from Afghanistan. Luttrell was the sole SEAL team member to survive an intense June 2005 firefight with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Dasy, named after each of Luttrell's fallen peers, Daniel "Danny" Dietz, Matthew "Axe" Axelson and Michael "Yankee" Murphy, reportedly helped the SEAL overcome his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Her sudden death did not sit easy with Luttrell, who after hearing gunshots outside his house, went outside to investigate.

"He heard some people talking over on a road and went out to where they were," said Lisa Block, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. "He saw they had a shot gun and nearby found his dog, Dasy, dead."

The dog apparently did not die instantly from the gunshot wounds, Luttrell realized.

"I could tell she tried to get away because there was a blood trail. When I saw she was dead, the only thing that popped into my head was, I've got to take these guys out," Luttrell said, according to The Associated Press.

After Luttrell confronted them, the men got into their car and fled; the SEAL continued to pursue them through three different counties, until they were stopped by the Onalaska Police Department.

Along the way on the chase, Luttrell placed a desperate call to 911, warning the dispatcher of his potential to strike, as well.

"I told them, 'You need to get somebody out here because if I catch them I'm going to kill them,' " Luttrell recalled to The Houston Chronicle.

"I was trying to talk myself out of being who I am. Talking to myself about not doing the one thing I am good at."

The Walker County Sheriff's Department is now investigating the death of Dasy. It has already charged Michael John Edmonds II, 21, and Alfonzo Hernandez, 24, with animal cruelty charges. The crime could elicit up to two years in prison, Block said.

The SPCA International, which helps U.S. soldiers bring back the pets they adopted while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, has not spoken to Luttrell. He apparently left town following the incident.

Yet the organization has nevertheless organized a petition in support of prosecuting the alleged cruelty offenders to the greatest extent of the law, according to Stephanie Scroggs, SPCA International spokeswoman.

"We were just watching blogs and seeing the outrage in the online community and how people were so angry, of course, with this," Scroggs said.

"We have first-hand knowledge of how important animals can be in helping our vets heal from emotional scars and battles. We wanted to help channel that outrage into a productive form of activism."

The organization hopes to receive 5,000 signatures -- by Thursday, it was already half-way there, Scroggs said. The petition was posted online only two days before.

"We're just focused on getting the petition out there," Scroggs continued. "The best thing we can do right now is to make sure these people face some serious justice."

In 2006, Luttrell was awarded the Navy Cross for combat heroism. He was the sole survivor of operation RED WING, conducted in the Hindu-Kush mountain region of Afghanistan.

Luttrell and his team, working remotely, were discovered by more than 200 Taliban fighters. Sixteen Special Forces personnel, including eight SEALs, perished in the confrontation. It was the largest single-day loss of life in SEALs' history.

Lutrell, though wounded, survived by crawling several miles through the mountain range. He was eventually discovered by anti-Taliban village people and taken under their wing.

Dasy had proved instrumental in helping Luttrell recover from the emotional trauma he endured.

"I consider that dog just like a daughter to me," he said, according to the SPCA International.

I've changed my mind, I don't think these dirtbags should be given the maximum sentence, it's not enough, I think they should be flown to Irak or Afghanistan. They should be set down behind enemy lines, without any training or any guns or anything to help them survive (just about as defenseless as Dasy was...) but with a sidn saying "Use me as target practice" (JUST AS THEY USED DASY!!) on their backs and chest. I'd love to see these barbarians have a dose of their own medicine and feel the fear of being prey...I'm sure Dasy is not the first defenseless animal that they have killed...like someone said, this type of scum are serial killers. Prison...too good for them, make them suffer!!!

My heart goes out to Mr. Lutrell, along with my thanks for his service and SACRIFICE on behalf of our country. Considering what he had to live through in Afghanistan, I would say he exercised exceptional judgment in calling 911, once he realized what might happen if he caught the men who murdered his dog. None of us should judge him for his initial reaction, as no one else has walked in his shoes. Yes, he needs and deserves support and help from the country for whom he sacrificed so much. Crimes toward animals will never stop until the punishments begin to fit the crimes. When we lose a beloved pet, it seems we'll never be able to give our hearts to another one at the time, but that it absolutely what we should do. I hope Mr. Lutrell adopts or is given a pet who needs help, so they can heal each other, because that's the amazing thing about our relationships with God's little creatures. They teach us things we cannot learn from other humans. My deepest sympathy to Mr. Lutrell.

I agree, we cannot judge Marcus for his initial reaction, we have not lived what he has lived, we have not lost what he has lost, nor have we suffered like he has suffered. I think that he showed AMAZING judgment by calling 911 and actually telling them that they better find the idiots first or he didn't know what he would do to them. He knows he has a lot of problems and was receiving help for them, and Dasy was part of that treatment. He isn't the threat to society, HE SHOWED RESTRAINT...the idiots who shot his dog (and other "people" like them) are a threat to society, what's to say that tomorrow they stop getting their thrills from shooting defenseless animals and move on to defenseless people "just for the fun of it", you think they wouldn't...I do, I think there's just a fine line between shooting and animal and shooting a person, both show a complete disregard for life!! My heart goes out to Marcus and so do my prayers, he won't be able to "replace" Dasy (can you "replace" a son or a daughter...even if you have more children...because you DO end up loving them like children!!), but I hope he gets the help he needs to deal with what he went through in Afghanistan and now with the unnecessary death of his beloved pet. Hopefully the SPCA will help him adopt another needful animal and they will help heal each other.

I saw this story featured on Fox news. Fox went into a lot more detail about the chase and the perpertrators. I believe there is also a third individual that was invovled and that is still at large. They laughed and told the Navy Seal that they are going to come back and get him. These dirtbags need to be put away for a long, long time.

Very disturbing, not only the idiot's who shot this mans dog, but his reaction. I know that it is how I would feel, but taking matter in his own hands could have made a bad situation worse. My heart goes out to him, I hope the men who shot his dog get the maximum and I will sign the petition myself, but I also hope and pray that this Navy Seal, who is a hero in his own right, gets more help too.

There will not be anything that will replace Dasy for him, of that much I am certain, but post traumatic stress seems to still be a part of him and I hope he gets any and all assistance he needs.

Sorry don't agree, he very clearly showed self-control and good judgment by calling 911, BECAUSE HE KNEW WHAT HE WAS CAPABLE OF DOING!!! I don't know if you have any children, but I'd love to see your reaction if someone just offed them for the hell of it. You can't judge if you don't know. The real threats to society are the idiots that shot the dog....not the Nabvy SEAL...who WAS getting help for his post traumatic stress and DASY was part of that treatment (or did you not read the article clearly?). I'd be more scared to bump into the two jerks than to bump into Marcus!!

Two years is not nearly enough punishment. I do feel however, that as heartbroken as he was about the killing of his dog & friend had he hurt anyone, person or pet this episode would be even worse, no one should be racing through several counties with no regard for other innocent beings. Good that he called 911 and the police intervened in time.

You are so right Tina. To call this merely "animal cruelty" is almost as bad as the act. Two years, which probably turns into much less, is just disgusting. These guys are murderers. I hope everyone in the area knows their names, and makes the rest of their miserable lives even worst. Sorry, not a good Easter thought, but it just enrages me the cruelty of the act and the suffering of this poor soldier.

It isn't bad enough that Lutrell suffered emotional scars from his tour of duty and lost 3 team mates? Now he's got to suffer the agony of losing Dasy?

I hope those guys get what they have coming to them!

Up to two years in prison is NOT enough punishment for a heinous act like this. I'm tired of criminals getting their hands slapped and we as law abiding citizens are suppose to turn the other cheek. They obviously have no respect for life and others so why should we have any for them. I wish Luttrell had caught them!

pray for Mr. Lutrell, he is going to have a very, very hard time getting over this. As for the people who did this-I imagine they cannot even be made to realize what they have done-I can`t imagine that prison will be safe for them considering this crime, and when they are released-well, no where will be safe. Our children are not safe, and I know how he could feel this dog was a daughter to him. I am so sad after reading this and other news today.

I will never understand in my lifetime the cruelty and

Our country needs to toughen our laws on cruelty and
