Navy SEAL Chases Men Who Killed His Dog

Browse News

NEW YORK -- As if saying goodbye to his three Navy SEAL teammates wasn't enough, veteran Marcus Luttrell has now lost his dog Dasy, too.

The yellow Labrador was shot dead on Luttrell's Huntsville, Texas, property on April 1.

The killing resulted in a high-speed car case, as Luttrell hounded the accused killers through four different counties before two of the men were arrested with charges of cruelty to a non-livestock animal.

Dasy wasn't just any household pet -- she was given to Luttrell following his return to the United States in 2006 from Afghanistan. Luttrell was the sole SEAL team member to survive an intense June 2005 firefight with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Dasy, named after each of Luttrell's fallen peers, Daniel "Danny" Dietz, Matthew "Axe" Axelson and Michael "Yankee" Murphy, reportedly helped the SEAL overcome his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Her sudden death did not sit easy with Luttrell, who after hearing gunshots outside his house, went outside to investigate.

"He heard some people talking over on a road and went out to where they were," said Lisa Block, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. "He saw they had a shot gun and nearby found his dog, Dasy, dead."

The dog apparently did not die instantly from the gunshot wounds, Luttrell realized.

"I could tell she tried to get away because there was a blood trail. When I saw she was dead, the only thing that popped into my head was, I've got to take these guys out," Luttrell said, according to The Associated Press.

After Luttrell confronted them, the men got into their car and fled; the SEAL continued to pursue them through three different counties, until they were stopped by the Onalaska Police Department.

Along the way on the chase, Luttrell placed a desperate call to 911, warning the dispatcher of his potential to strike, as well.

"I told them, 'You need to get somebody out here because if I catch them I'm going to kill them,' " Luttrell recalled to The Houston Chronicle.

"I was trying to talk myself out of being who I am. Talking to myself about not doing the one thing I am good at."

The Walker County Sheriff's Department is now investigating the death of Dasy. It has already charged Michael John Edmonds II, 21, and Alfonzo Hernandez, 24, with animal cruelty charges. The crime could elicit up to two years in prison, Block said.

The SPCA International, which helps U.S. soldiers bring back the pets they adopted while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, has not spoken to Luttrell. He apparently left town following the incident.

Yet the organization has nevertheless organized a petition in support of prosecuting the alleged cruelty offenders to the greatest extent of the law, according to Stephanie Scroggs, SPCA International spokeswoman.

"We were just watching blogs and seeing the outrage in the online community and how people were so angry, of course, with this," Scroggs said.

"We have first-hand knowledge of how important animals can be in helping our vets heal from emotional scars and battles. We wanted to help channel that outrage into a productive form of activism."

The organization hopes to receive 5,000 signatures -- by Thursday, it was already half-way there, Scroggs said. The petition was posted online only two days before.

"We're just focused on getting the petition out there," Scroggs continued. "The best thing we can do right now is to make sure these people face some serious justice."

In 2006, Luttrell was awarded the Navy Cross for combat heroism. He was the sole survivor of operation RED WING, conducted in the Hindu-Kush mountain region of Afghanistan.

Luttrell and his team, working remotely, were discovered by more than 200 Taliban fighters. Sixteen Special Forces personnel, including eight SEALs, perished in the confrontation. It was the largest single-day loss of life in SEALs' history.

Lutrell, though wounded, survived by crawling several miles through the mountain range. He was eventually discovered by anti-Taliban village people and taken under their wing.

Dasy had proved instrumental in helping Luttrell recover from the emotional trauma he endured.

"I consider that dog just like a daughter to me," he said, according to the SPCA International.

How could someone do this to an innocent animal??! I feel so sad for Mr. Luttrell, this kind of thing just isn't justifiable and these kids deserve the harshest punishment the legal system can give them!

you go marcus if anyone harmed any of my dogs like that i would have chased them down to i just probably would have waited til i caught them to call 911. 2 yr in prison isn't a good enough punishment. personally i think anyone who can just walk up and shoot someones dog for no da#^ reason should be put down and treated in the same manor

First of all Mr. Luttrell, thank you for your service to our country. Second, please
accept our deepest condolences for your loss of Dasy. As parents of children serving our country and pet lovers, we feel for you and hope that the people that did this will see justice, if not here, when they meet their maker...

After reading this my heart was broken. I feel that Marcus had extreme self control. If it would have been me I might not have had it. I hope this sensless, pointless and horrific act does not go unpunished.

I commend Marcus on the thought to chase them down and call the cops rather than what he could have done. HE IS A NAVY SEAL!!! Those kids are lucky that he was in his right mind to just call the police!! Nothing can ever replace Dasy or his fallen team, BUT I think it would be awesome if someone donated a new puppy to him...dogs are great for depression!!

I'm crying as I write this. First, thank you sir for your service and sacrifice for our country. Second, there is no penalty harsh enough for these punks. Nothing can replace this gentlemans fallen comrades but this beautiful creature gave him some peace. I hope he can come to realize how many people appreciate and mourn with him over his losses. God be with you.

First off, It should be a felony punishable by death to kill any pet of someone who served our country(no matter what kind; rodent, cat, dog, horse, reptile, bird.) I hope these guys are locked in cells that have animal lovers. They took away not only his baby girl, they basicly took away his friends again. I bet they saw her and thought "hey this will be fun" and I bet she just ran up to them to be friendly. how sad that in her last moments she experienced pain from humans (though I don't think they really are human) I know they are going to hell.

I have followed Marcus' story long before this happened. No dog deserves to be brutally murdered, Dasy was so much more than just a man's dog. I heard him on the Glenn Beck radio show shortly after this happened and he sounded so broken. My prayers are with him. I will sign the petition in a heart beat. These idiots do not deserve the freedom that Marcus and his brothers gave their lives for.

Anyone who could hurt a precious animal is also capable of doing the same to humans. The teenagers who did this should have to donate 5000 hours each in a non-profit facility that helps animals. They should also have to give lectures to their peers about what they did and how wrong it is. I hope Navy Seal Marcus is able to let another puppy into his heart. My heart goes out to him.

Honestly I wouldn't let any one of them near an animal facility. I would fear for the safety of the animals. They have shown a disregard for an animals life and if they are true to form they will consider themselves blameless and take it out on the animals for their predicament no matter how vigilant the staff and volunteers may be. I'd prefer that they work in a municiple sewer plant where they can handle the rest of the..............................................excrement................................Dennis

I agree, they would say "we didn't do anything wrong, it's 'just an animal'" They should be made to clean out a sewer with their own tooth brushes then be made to brush their teeth with said tooth brushes.

I think it is time for the law to completely be updated so as to bar these things from happening for thrill seekers. These men are sick human beings. The outcome of being completely bereft of feeling any compassion for living beings. They are dangerous, the next time probably would be a human, therefore, this crime should be punished as if it was a human. My condolences to the owner.

It is so hard to lose a pet under normal circumstances - I can't even imagine losing one to such an act of violance!
It is so maddening that American's serve their country to the extent of potentially losing their lives and losing comrades - only to come home and be victims of such stupid and ignorant hayoos! How tragic for this American Hero. My heart truly goes out to him. I hope the creeps that shot his dog get sent to jail for a long time - maybe they'll end-up being the pooch's end in prison! But, even that would be too good for them. Instead, maybe we should parachute them right into the middle of the war zone and see how they fair.
As for our American Hero who lost his friend and companion - while he Dasy can never be replaced - there are a lot of pups out there ready, willing, and eager to help you heal. My prayers are with you. There are no words to express how sorry I am that there are so many insensitive and just down right stupid people out there!

My heart goes out to Marcus and sweet Dasy -- i pray she did not suffer much. I'm thrilled that Marcus' passion to bring these two idiots down led them to be captured -- now, for them to face their consequences -- lock them up for at least 2 years -- charge them with a hefty fine -- mandate that they receive a mental evaluation -- God knows, as we all do, these idiots are not mentally stable. Do not let them out until they have had mental rehab -- will that be ever? God only knows!

Great job Luttrell! I think I may have done the same thing in that situation. I think crimes like this should carry a much stiffer sentence, murdering an innocent being like that. To me that is just as bad as killing his child, I'm sure he feels that way or he wouldn't have done what he did. Hopefully he will find some justice.

I like the suggestion of dropping them off in enemy territory. My heart goes out to Mr. Luttrell. He fought so these guys could have their freedom and they go do this. Hopefully they will lose their rights to freedom. I pray that although Dasy's death wasn't immediate, that she didn't have to suffer a lot. Such a senseless loss.
