Navy SEAL Chases Men Who Killed His Dog

Browse News

NEW YORK -- As if saying goodbye to his three Navy SEAL teammates wasn't enough, veteran Marcus Luttrell has now lost his dog Dasy, too.

The yellow Labrador was shot dead on Luttrell's Huntsville, Texas, property on April 1.

The killing resulted in a high-speed car case, as Luttrell hounded the accused killers through four different counties before two of the men were arrested with charges of cruelty to a non-livestock animal.

Dasy wasn't just any household pet -- she was given to Luttrell following his return to the United States in 2006 from Afghanistan. Luttrell was the sole SEAL team member to survive an intense June 2005 firefight with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Dasy, named after each of Luttrell's fallen peers, Daniel "Danny" Dietz, Matthew "Axe" Axelson and Michael "Yankee" Murphy, reportedly helped the SEAL overcome his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Her sudden death did not sit easy with Luttrell, who after hearing gunshots outside his house, went outside to investigate.

"He heard some people talking over on a road and went out to where they were," said Lisa Block, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. "He saw they had a shot gun and nearby found his dog, Dasy, dead."

The dog apparently did not die instantly from the gunshot wounds, Luttrell realized.

"I could tell she tried to get away because there was a blood trail. When I saw she was dead, the only thing that popped into my head was, I've got to take these guys out," Luttrell said, according to The Associated Press.

After Luttrell confronted them, the men got into their car and fled; the SEAL continued to pursue them through three different counties, until they were stopped by the Onalaska Police Department.

Along the way on the chase, Luttrell placed a desperate call to 911, warning the dispatcher of his potential to strike, as well.

"I told them, 'You need to get somebody out here because if I catch them I'm going to kill them,' " Luttrell recalled to The Houston Chronicle.

"I was trying to talk myself out of being who I am. Talking to myself about not doing the one thing I am good at."

The Walker County Sheriff's Department is now investigating the death of Dasy. It has already charged Michael John Edmonds II, 21, and Alfonzo Hernandez, 24, with animal cruelty charges. The crime could elicit up to two years in prison, Block said.

The SPCA International, which helps U.S. soldiers bring back the pets they adopted while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, has not spoken to Luttrell. He apparently left town following the incident.

Yet the organization has nevertheless organized a petition in support of prosecuting the alleged cruelty offenders to the greatest extent of the law, according to Stephanie Scroggs, SPCA International spokeswoman.

"We were just watching blogs and seeing the outrage in the online community and how people were so angry, of course, with this," Scroggs said.

"We have first-hand knowledge of how important animals can be in helping our vets heal from emotional scars and battles. We wanted to help channel that outrage into a productive form of activism."

The organization hopes to receive 5,000 signatures -- by Thursday, it was already half-way there, Scroggs said. The petition was posted online only two days before.

"We're just focused on getting the petition out there," Scroggs continued. "The best thing we can do right now is to make sure these people face some serious justice."

In 2006, Luttrell was awarded the Navy Cross for combat heroism. He was the sole survivor of operation RED WING, conducted in the Hindu-Kush mountain region of Afghanistan.

Luttrell and his team, working remotely, were discovered by more than 200 Taliban fighters. Sixteen Special Forces personnel, including eight SEALs, perished in the confrontation. It was the largest single-day loss of life in SEALs' history.

Lutrell, though wounded, survived by crawling several miles through the mountain range. He was eventually discovered by anti-Taliban village people and taken under their wing.

Dasy had proved instrumental in helping Luttrell recover from the emotional trauma he endured.

"I consider that dog just like a daughter to me," he said, according to the SPCA International.

I'm signing this petition. This poor man risked his life for our country for what? To come home and have his dog murdered before him? I tell you two years is not enough!

Sign this petition asking lawmakers and prosecutors to punish these punks to the fullest extent of the law (and to increase laws punishing such cruelty).

I signed it and got many others to do so as well. I hate people like that that think it's ok to do something that cold-hearted, then laugh about it afterward. That there deserves a severe punishment. Put them in jail with animal lovers. Lets see how long they'll last then. Too bad that guy didn't catch them. I wouldn't mind a couple less idiots in this world to deal with.

Both offenders should rot in jail. The mentality it takes to do what they did is insight to just what they are capable of doing further.

God bless Mr. Lutrell; I wish him peace.

How could he NOT do what he did...give chase. It was automatic within him through his SEAL training. And! How much he loved this little dog. It appears Dasy was Lutrell's lifeline. Of course he would go after the men!!

I hope this poor man does not suffer much more. He has been through too many horror ordeals.

Pray for peace and healing for Lutrell. Dasy is still beside him.

RIP sweet baby.

My heart goes out to him. I think a lot of us would go to the ends of the earth to protect our dogs especially since they are so special. Poor Dasy. At least the guys got caught and hopefully will pay (although 2 years isn't that much for killing a defenseless animal).

That is so sad and I salute him for not killing them which is what anyone would of wanted to do. I am very thankful he followed them and they were caught. How senseless. I do hope they are prosecuted to the fullest extent. It is very disturbing.

I would have reacted the same way. They had no right to do that and to someone who served their country and was given the dog.

Navy SEALs go through the toughest training of any branch of the army. They are one of the most skilled combat soldiers on the world. If my dog was shot right in my backyard, I would have reacted the same as this man. He comes home from his whole SEAL team being annihilated, crawls miles to safety, and just to come home to have his dog blasted in his backyard. If he had gooten ahold of these men, they would have been destroyed. I hope they get the max sentence and i also hope he meets them in a bar someday. =)

This just angers me to no end. How could they do such a terrible thing. I am starting to favor eye for an eye. Anyone who hurts animals should be tortured the way they hurt the animals, and I feel for this man who lost his dog. Someone shot our dog too when I was a child. They need to toughen the laws. Same punishment if they do it to an animal as a human. It would end quick.

That Is Really Sad. How Can People Be So Cruel And Kill A Helpless Animal. Especially Someones Beloved Pet. Those Guys Are Very Lucky He Didn't Catch Up To Them. I Know If It Was Me, They Wouldn't Have A Chance To Go To Jail. The Only Place They Would Go Is To Their Grave.

Such a sad thing for him to have to go through after having lost so much already. I have served in the Army, and I know how comforting and what a relief it was to have the dedication and affection of my animals when I came home.

This type of story, like the michael vick story is tragic but it is also the type of story that can spur lawmakers to make meaningful change in animal welfare laws.
After the vick story there was a rush to change laws and as painful as it was to read, we know his dogs are smiling at the bridge because they have helped so many more through increased awareness and new laws and I hope Daisy will spur the same kind of change...........................Dennis

When I heard about this last week I was so outraged. I think they should give these guys over to Mr. Lutrell. After they were arrested they were actually threatening his life!!! Punks...also they are thought to have shot a bunch more dogs in the area. What is wrong with people like these young men? I wish all the bast to Mr Lutrell and I believe Texas will deal with this appropriatly. What a sad story....maybe we should send these guys over to Iraq or Afganistan with no protection...

How horrible! I know firsthand about people shooting an animal & not caring. My brothers 2 German Shepherds were shot just before Christmas last year, on our road, by hunters. The female was dragged to a road a mile away, but he found her within a month. The male will never be found. They were home dogs & loved my brother to pieces & he them. Sickening.

This is an outrage. Its an outrage that it should happen to anyone's dog. From the reports I've read, Luttrell's dog wasn't the only one they killed. I hope they go to prison. Luttrell is a hero to all. I have no doubt that the inmates will inflict their own punishment as well. Even most criminals have respect for Lutrell and a good dog.

There isn't a person out there that knows how bad it is to lose a family pet, but for this man to lose his pet that was also there to help him through his loss of his partners is unbearable. Punish those men to the fullest please!!!

I am outraged at the cowardly act of those creeps, shooting a helpless animal! They should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, & then some. People like that don't even deserve to walk the face of the earth. As I see it, they have no soul. I hope Mr. Lutrell can overcome his loss. Perhaps he can with the help of another pet that may be looking for a good home. That way they'd be helping each other. My prayers are with him.

This is such a disturbing thing to do-shooting a dog. Mr.Luttrell's dog was everything to him. These criminals who did this need to be given the maximum sentence. Mr.Luttrell served our country, lost his friends and we need to give him his justice he deserves.

Thankfully for Marcus he had good wits to call the police as no doubt he would have followed through on taking those guys out and then been accountable by law. How heartbreaking to read how people can be be so cold and killed his companion dog. I am glad that Texas has felony laws for people like this and feel under the circumstances these guys will get the fullest extent of punishment which is probably not near enough.
